First time i played this for about an hour it felt like nothing really came together, no method of using the items combined into functional solutions. I felt put off by the game and thought i wouldn't come back to it. But i wanted to give it another go so i played again the next day and it somehow clicked. I started understanding the items and how to get the most out of them. Every random combination of given items offered at least some ideas about possible solutions. Now it's been almost the only thing i played for like the last three days and i can't stop, it is so so good.

I wanted to say this in case you buy this game and feel put off by it at first because so was i. But once it gets its hooks into you, man is it great.

A distilled Souls-like that is all around really solid and fun to play, except for the endgame where it just gets a little unbalanced. This is basically all you need to know. The game was fun all throughout up until the levels towards to end where it often just increased the difficulty by making the levels longer/having you fight more enemies, instead of maybe bringing in new ones for example. Also the final boss is a pushover, which just added to a pretty unsatisfying ending. But, nonetheless, the mechanics are really fun, the graphics are super unique, the sound design is punchy and crunchy and i think it is absolutely worth buying.

I knew i shouldn't have bought this game. I loved the Lego games as a kid, Lego Racers 1/2, Lego Island 1/2, Lego Rock Raiders, all those classic games. And i was really excited to see that we would finally get a new Lego game without a franchise attached to it. A quasi sequel to Lego Racers no less!

But...after playing the game for about an hour and a half i just couldn't get myself to continue. It feels exactly how i feared it would: Like a facade. A facade to feign child-friendliness while they're actually just out to get your money. I just can not shake this feeling of disappointment and anger and how it completely goes against how i want to see Lego. My favorite childhood toy maker just proved they don't care about kids at all. I hate it. I hate how much this ruins the brand for me. I hate how it ruins the game. I'm sorry for everyone who worked on this game and wanted to simply create a fun experience, who put their passion into this game. Because the passion definitely shows. But it's all just overshadowed by predatory monetization schemes for me.

Don't buy this game. Or better yet, buy it, leave a negative review and then refund it. This is not acceptable.

I'm a little torn on this one.

Pros: Everything but the save-system
Cons: The save system but nothing else

The game looks absolutely incredible with a wholly unique artstyle, animations that fit it's overall non-serious vibe perfectly, punchy retro sounds and a unique approach to a dungeon-crawler based on games like Punchout (that I've personally never played, but i heard that this is what the combat system is based on).

If you're looking to try something new and unique, like i hoped this would be, buy it. It is just that and i've played nothing else like it before. I've not played much yet and it's been rather easy so far - except for a certain enemy that jumps out at you from the bottom that i had absolutely no idea how to defend against. It killed me. And that brings me to the single con:

The save system. Judging from other reviews, it looks like it's gonna stay the way it is right now in my short playtime, throughout the whole game. What is it like? Well, if you want to save, there is only one place to do so: Outside of the area where you're doing all the dungeon crawling. So every time you're venturing into the dungeons "how far can i risk to go" will be your main question. It can make for quite a fun challenge on the one hand but on the other, i think you can imagine how frustrating it is to maybe lose an hour of progress. And this will absolutely happen. The game will throw a combat situation at you that you haven't been in before and you'll be overwhelmed. You won't be able to anticipate when they happen, since there's 99% random encounters.
Losing an hour of progress is also a very likely scenario because the alternative of constantly going back and forth just to save as much as you can would be incredibly tedious. It's funny, there are accessibility options but the one option i was hoping for, which would be maybe some quick teleport to the save point or manual saving at any time, wasn't there.

So yeah, if this aspect doesn't scare you off of wanting to try something new and unique, go for it. Right now i find it worth it. My opinion might change later on. Will the difficulty stay consistent? Will i really have to backtrack aaaall the way all the time or will there be shortcuts? If not, i can see myself becoming very frustrated. If that happens, i might update my review. Until then, i hope my early thoughts help you out in your decision.

Does not work on Steam Deck.

Even with the help of ProtonDB, where people said to add some start command and switch to Proton Experimental (whch was the only way to indeed get it to boot) it crashed after the tutorial race twice. Oh and often, it still doesn't even launch at all. 0.4 hours of playtime, yeah right. I played for effectively 2 minutes. And all just because of a stupid launcher that breaks every single time they update it (EA Play App). I was really excited for this game and it's at such a great deal price right now, so this is really disappointing.

Man, they just don't make games like these anymore. Flatout and Burnout are simply the best arcade racing games ever.

This game gets too little recognition for how good it is. I consider myself rather picky when it comes to platformers. I love the genre but there's a lot in there that i don't like. This game is based on a cartoon show that i used to watch as a kid - i think it might have gotten rebooted as a 3d animated cartoon at some point, that being where the designs in this game stem from.

So yeah, a game based on a license. We all know how those go, don't we? Well, apparently we don't. This game is perfect. There is literally nothing i can complain about, except for the walljump feeling a little finnicky. This is, in every regard, how a platformer should feel. Responsive, creative and just plain fun. The graphics are wonderful, the soundtrack is an absolute banger, the sound design is super satisfying, the gameplay is fluid and has a great sense of flow to it, the controls are immaculate and the challenge ramps up quite nicely, with added difficulty if you wanna go for all the collectibles and maybe even the time trial challenges (man, they didn't call them "challenges" for nothing).

I think this is now one of my favorite platformers i've ever played. It is constant fun, i can't get enough of it and the overall atmosphere just has such a feel-good, happy atmosphere to it (which, again, don't let that fool you in terms of potential difficulty when trying to 100% it). I highly recommend this to anyone!

Oh and side-note: People say this game is similar to "Donkey Kong Country" in terms of mechanics. While, yes it is, i didn't really like DKC. I also didn't enjoy Yooka-Laylee's second game or "Kaze & The Wild Masks" all that much. They're apparently just not really my preferred style of gameplay. But even being DKC-like, i love this game, so so much and it feels right in every way that those other games didn't to me. So even if you (i know this is probably a niche worry that one could have) didn't like any of those games, give this one a try!

Hooba!

It's not funny. I get the joke, but it's just not funny to me :/.

Sir Whoopass is a game that identifies as a joke. I love humorous games and i know that this is highly subjective. A lot of people here love this game. But the thing is, i don't see it just making fun of RPG tropes or anything. Personally, i'd say the joke is "bad unity RPG games are bad and lazy" while it itself is a bad Unity game. You can of course create professional feeling jank. You can mock bad combat in games in ways that feel satisfying while still referencing how bad it is. But in this game, all the elements that it is mocking, they're not much better. It just is a bad Unity game, despite being a pretty good bad one. I know all of this sounds super confusing, so let me try to be a little more concise here:

The game is making fun of standard same-y RPG stories in a way of being exactly like them. This might change later on, but from the very start, every plot point in that half an hour of play time was about 100% foreseeable. That is not a mistake or bad writing despite best efforts, it is intentional. It allows the game to constantly point fingers and say "You know how this thing is totally overused? Here we are using the overused thing. God, isn't it overused? Haha, it's funny that we're using it regardless", but to me it's not. A joke is rarely funny if you can guess the punchline already. And as i mentioned above, those jokes are not just about "basic RPG tropes". "How to create your first RPG in Unity" as the title of a book in a shelf that you can interact with is one of the jokes that this game makes in reference to lazily slapped together Unity games. But again, does it separate itself from those? Not really, no. It feels exactly like those, just more polished. A polished turd is literally the best description i can give here. I don't want to call it a "turd" because that's giving off a harsher impression than i intend to, but you know, it's a phrase that helps show what i'm getting at. It is polished trash. Not highly polished, just polished. I would even argue that the game might have worked much better for me if it actually *was* highly polished trash, but that's just not what it feels like. It feels like a competent first Action RPG in Unity attempt with solid graphics. But it's not exactly...fun. Again, it doesn't feel much different from the games it's mocking. It works and it can be enjoyable here and there but it has this general feeling jankiness, from its physics to the combat, to its movement mechanics. It's all just a little "off" feeling.

So in essence - Sir Whoopass is a game making fun of same-y rpg stories and first-timer unity rpg game mechanics that don't go beyond the minimum while itself not being above them but rather falling victim to the same issues, making everything very predictable and thus unsurprising and fails to catch me at that meta-humor level that it's pretending to be competent at. It's not lazy, it's not carelessly made, but it just doesn't succeed at what it sets out to do in my opinion. I don't want this game to fail and i usually rather not leave negative reviews for games that people are clearly enjoying. But i want to help people who are trying to accurately judge whether they would like this game or not, so i hope this review offers another useful perspective.

One of the best new games that i've played in a while. It is one of those games where you barely survive a level at first (if you even do) but quickly become better. It demands skillful play but it offers such a good variety of intertwining elements that can sum up to masterful play that it is just endlessly motivating to figure out, what you could do better. And the game let's you do this at your own pace, it doesn't hold your hand. It supplies all the parts and tells you how to use them but it forces you to become creative with your style - and this demand works super well in this game.

If you like games like Hotline Miami or Neon White for their difficulty and simultaneous motivation to get better at the them, this is for you. You know, actually, if you like games, this game is for you. Seriously, i highly recommend it!

An unassuming looking platformer that i got very cheap at some point and loved playing in Singleplayer. But then a friend suggested to me that we could play it in Co-Op and oh my god, that was a whole other league. It is insanely fun to play with friends! And the cutscenes, the voice actor and his humor, they're the funniest i've ever seen in a game, no competition. Play this game, it's a steal when it's on sale and just insanely good!
