This game is nothing short of incredible.

A friend had gifted me this game back in 2018, but I never had a real interest in playing it. I always thought the difficulty would be too much to handle and it would do nothing but frustrate me. Six years later, I finally decided to give it a try after stumbling upon some gameplay clips that made the game look very appealing.

My initial judgement could not have been more wrong. After struggling through the Cemetery of Ash, I managed to beat Iudex Gundyr , the tutorial boss. The rush of beating the boss felt so incredible, it instantly had me hooked.

As my first soulsbourne game, I found it very intimidating exploring the first few areas, and did not understand basic souls mechanics such as not having to kill every enemy to progress through the levels (you can imagine my shock the first time I cleared an area and hit the bonfire just to notice all of the enemies have now respawned). It took a few hours to defeat Vordt , the first “actual” boss of the game, but my excitement was immeasurable.

Surprisingly, the deaths never actually felt frustrating, and this game does very well at teaching you that failure is okay as long as you pick yourself up and try again. After every attempt, you find yourself picking up on a boss’ move set that you then use to your advantage on the next try.

However, I experienced my first major hurdle when I came across the Abyss Watchers . The challenge of facing multiple very aggressive enemies was quite hard to overcome. Simply put, this is where I really needed to “git gud”. Once I made it past this roadblock, it became clear that the feeling of defeating a boss after struggling on it for hours is incredibly satiating and rewarding.

I could feel that I was getting better as the game went on, and there were a few bosses I even ended up beating on my first try! This review is coming after completing my first playthrough and what this game does very well at is making you think about subsequent playthroughs while still in your first. What kind of build do I want to try next? Should I try a sellsword/dex build? Do I try a Faith/Int or Pyro build? Or do I continue using other heavy hitting strength weapons? There are so many great weapons that I would like to try, so these were questions I constantly asked myself throughout my playthrough.

I cannot wait to play through this game again. I highly recommend this game to anyone who has an interest in souls-like games. Dark Souls III is truly a masterpiece.

To the friend who gifted me this game all those years ago, thank you.
