While the lore is largely detached from the first and third game in the series, and lacks some of the epic framing, it's true to the enigmatic desolation of the series, and many plot devices are compelling enough, I wish they'd returned in the third. Though the areas aren't designed as tightly as those in the first game, and don't cleverly fold together, they're consistently interesting, sometimes incredible, with unique atmospheres and designs, and their sprawling nature adds to the game's replayability. Enemy designs and placement are relatively uninspired and unforgiving, for this stellar series, but the Scholar of the First Sin edition made some minor fixes to this. Though most players seem to prefer the corresponding gameplay of the third entry, I find the hollowing, dual-wielding, and (dark) magic systems to be at the series' peak in this game. If you are a diehard fan of the series, I highly recommend playthroughs that emphasize dual-wielding and/or dark magic.
