Kill big monkey, big monkey fight back, kill us. Repeat. It's a good game, glad to see it wasn't just a cashgrab like some predicted back when, updates still coming and a fairly solid basic mechanics system. I'd still recommend playing with friends, its more of a party game than solo in my opinion but solid throughout. Don't come expecting some triple-a style game, its very much indie with a healthy sum of jank but that adds to its character. All in all, 7 big feet out of 10.

Overall, 7/10 but would recommend. Other reviews highlight in detail many of the flaws I'll state the main ones I encountered briefly:

Horrendous initial release, lag/stuttering and overall a lack of optimization and clearly was rushed or not tested properly. Fixed mostly currently, though even throughout my run I encountered some vestiges of issues. Crashes are rare but still happen now and then as of posting.

Repeated enemy variety, akin to Dark Souls 2 in many ways this game suffers from repeat enemies combined with reusing boss NPCs as generic NPCs throughout in later portions. This can be done well as it was with some where it took a long time to encounter those repeat NPCs but others are very close and feel rushed.

Game length/direction, overall it can drag out at certain points. Or lack clear direction due to the at times perplexing Umbral mechanic but was rare for me though this game could be far shorter and the overall quality in regards to NPCs/bosses could be improved.

Multiplayer is busted, it will take a while or they'll abandon it. The PvP might pickup, but its sort of dead to my knowledge.

The good is pretty simple, its a good spin on a souls-like, when the bosses are not kinda generic the named 'cool' bosses are good fights, the OST ain't half bad either. The combat is pretty fluid and tight, it takes a bit to get used to but its solid. It varies from the FromSoft model in many ways that makes it unique. In essence, if you like souls-like games you'll like this. Though if you are principled and dislike supporting busted launches or ain't into the combat it will drag and be a huge bummer. Still recommend though I do hope the developers continue updating, maybe pump out a DLC with all the input from the community or intend a few years from now with more dev time to make a sequel. Or not, overall I hope they can keep focusing on quality for this is a gem, not a perfect flawless one that is a masterpiece but maybe a garnet in the gem world.

Play vanilla for long time, download mods, play longer. I've spent too many hours. Great game, shoot zombies, remember Keith, praise Coach.

Although many will say DS2 is bad and a horrible game, there is some specks of gold in the dung pile that is DS2. The typical critiques still stand and yet one thing I cannot say is that I hate DS2, it has so much charm and very unique aspects about it that it's hard for me to see the absolute disdain people hold for it. The issues it has are large certainly, and it is a lesser Souls game because of it. However there are many parts of this game which somehow improved on either their predecessor or even successor. You will notice if you examine the game there are many details that are either vacant from future souls games or were lacking in the prior two.

So much of this game ruins the normal flow of Dark Souls and yet some parts of it shine through. So give it a whirl, if it ain't your cup of tea don't play. But wait for a sale lol, I don't think it's worth what it is right now.

Though I recommend this game, allow me to state something simple. This game has made many great steps towards but at the same time it has made many missteps. The game is not perfect, but compared to most modern games it is indeed leagues above. I will share a link to a far more in depth critique that provides far greater insight so you don't have to read a full blown article, but in short there is...

Poor boss design, most of DS3 was copy-pasted into here, bloated world design, an even worse further advancement of quest/NPC design, the recurring trend of the 2nd half of the game receiving a retarded difficulty spike, the janky-bits from DS3 as well.

Yet for all the general bad above, it has many good aspects to it. I advise watching at least some of the highlights from the video below. Though hyper-cynical, he presents many good points on how the game is flawed. If you bother reading this, I still recommend the game even with its flaws.

Despite short playtime this comment is meant to symbolize my petty grievance towards the game. It is good, has potential but for those who wish to play something a tad more refined you may want to wait a bit. However it is good overall, enjoyable despite some early issues and balancing problems already noted by others that will hopefully be fixed, ie; sluggish aiming/movement, streamlining of some features that was unnecessary, and so on. Yet what truly brings me to write this is the removal of the opening themes played for each faction. Though not able to replicate it as was done in Tannenberg and Verdun, due to the new 'squad' system of sorts (or lack thereof), I am saddened that I don't hear a little audio cue to symbolize at least the faction I'm playing. One of the best and minute features was the themes that played upon you loading in joining a squad in Verdun and Tannenberg, to me at least.

Please, add this feature back at some point. Something so minute makes the game that bit more charming and flavorful.

I wish I had the vocabulary to say how amazing this is, instead I'll just keep it short. Great story, amazing gameplay, great visuals for Source. A true HL2 fan-game. A must-play, and hopefully by what I can tell there will be more work from this amazing team. Honestly, hats off to them for making one of, if not THE, best HL2 fan-games of all time/as of late.

Unironically has a better plot than 80% of modern games and especially story driven ones, compared to my most hated game of all time, Life is Strange. This illicit game somehow has a better plot despite its focus being literally on ERP basically. Also, not half bad looking.

Do you like engaging in colonialism and imperialism? Map painting? LARP? A modding community that isn't full of furries/weebs (At least on the surface). Then this is the Paradox game for you. And remember, Vanilla is aids, get a mod, HFM/HPM are good basic ones.
