I'm nowhere near far enough to give it a judgement I feel comfortable saying is decisive, but as of now, I can't believe how good it is. I am in absolute awe of how obvious it is that they really tried to do this right. I am very willing to say a game is good but doesn't fit what I had hoped for, which is a common thing as a survival horror fan. But so far, this is legitimately survival horror.

I am of course playing on the hardcore difficulty, which is doubtless influencing my assessment.

I did, yeah. It was fun. If you're experienced, it's not all that different to playing on nightmare difficulty. It's very doable.
