As some who has been playing games for most of my life, this game is a breath of fresh (yet nostalgic) air. To be able to buy a game and have the entirety of it be accessible and playable day 1 seems insane this day and age. And it shouldn't be. I remember when that was how all games released. You buy it, you get it. All of it. And damn, is there a lot in this game. Now, im not gonna sit here and say this is a flawless game, because its not, it has some flaws. (most notably for me at least, the camera can be downright awful sometimes. Maybe that's just me though.) What it does good, it does great though. The story is engaging with twists and turns abound with no railroaded way to get there. You want to work with that demon? Go for it. You want to murder that village? Have at it. You want to double cross the people you are helping? Go right ahead. Hey, remember that demon from earlier? You want to ♥♥♥♥ it? Sure, why not. The possibilities seem near limitless. And its not just the story that seems limitless, but the combat as well. Plenty of fleshed out companions (with their own story no less) to beat the hell out of anything in your way. Want to rush in, bows and fireballs blazing? Go right ahead. Want to try the sneaky approach, do that too. Hell, you can even pick up a goblin and beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of another goblin. That alone is worth the price. I just don't think i can stress enough how many options you get in this game. Having sat and talked about this game with some friends of mine that also own it seems each one of us has gone to places and done things in completely different ways. You just don't seem to get that now with modern AAA games and that's such a shame. Larian Studios has done what most other studios now cant seem to do. Make a good game, with no filler. No battle pass. No in game store. No micro transactions. None of that garbage. You used to go to a store to find a game, now you go to a game to find a store. This one is just a game. And a damn good one at that. Hopefully, its a game that other studios will look at as a sign of what to do. I still remember, as a kid, sitting in my parents living room turning on my N64 and loading up Ocarina of Time and just being happy. This brings me back to being that little kid again. If you are on the fence about this, just go for it, give it a shot. And if you still don't enjoy it, that's fine too. I just hope the studio you love takes a look at this game and tries to give you the same joy i got from it. Only time will tell.

If you're like me, you wanted to feel that magic of LFD and LFD2 in this game. Hate to break it to you, but none of the magic is there. I'm shocked these are the same devs as It honestly feels like a LFD knockoff. The story is boring as hell, none of the characters are likable or have any form of chemistry like the cast for LFD did. The guns have no weight to them, sure some of them sound alright, but none of the guns give you that "oomph" you would get with the guns in LFD. The campaign is boring as hell. And what the hell is wrong with the "director" in this game? There are special zombies every 2 feet. I have had 5 tall boys spawned at the exact same time on several occasions and that's just insane. And if your thinking just kite them. wrong. When you run, you get 5 steps of speed before your character almost dies of exhaustion. Remember that one kid in gym class that any sort of running and he would almost die immediately and would have to hit his inhaler? Yeah, that's your character. And god forbid a single zombie reach out with its 30ft hitbox and even touch your pants because then its like trying to run in quicksand. You just cant move, ever. It would help if there was a shove mechanic, but there isn't. You just punch them with your wet noodle arm which basically does nothing. Your only option is to stand and fight. But remember the special infected? That's right, 5 wretches spawn and explode on you and have sent you 12 counties over away from your teammates. That's not too bad though, at least you're away from the horde right? Wrong again. Two hockers are spitting at you while a stalker comes up and has his way with you, dragging you off to never be seen again. And this is all veteran, their "normal" difficulty. If you bump it down to recruit, you now become the John Wick of zombies. Nothing stands in your way and you slice through everything like a hot knife through butter and that's no fun either. Sure, all of this can be solved with getting better cards and such, but then why does the easiest difficulty have a penalty to the % of supply points gathered? You hardly get any in the first place, why lower it? At least the card system is unique and something i do enjoy about the game. Mixes it up a bit and gives you different ways to play. That, and the swarm mode are the only good things to come out of this game for me. Simply put, this game is NOT worth the $60 price tag and if you're an idiot like me, $100 , you're better off going back and playing LFD/2.

Before writing this review, i wanted a good feel for the game, to get as far as i could. I have got to end game content, done expeditions, got to high tier content. Was it worth it? Absolutely not.

Gonna try to start this off with some positives. The gameplay is pretty fun. Running around the battlefield basically as a god, spewing toxins, stopping time and causing volcanoes to erupt under the enemy is pretty damn satisfying. The story, while simple and predictable, is enjoyable for what it is. It's not the best, but I have absolutely seen worse. The guns and modding system are enjoyable. Expeditions are loads of fun. The graphics and sound design are pretty good.

Now, for the bad. And boy, is there a lot of bad. Constant disconnections, constant UE crashes, constant stuttering and tearing. The AI is questionable at best, have had instances of people just spawning on top of me. Since launch, every time i log in, I have no HUD. (the fix for that, since its a common issue, is to go in game, turn off HUD settings, leave game, go back in, then turn HUD settings back on and it should be resolved) Have yet to be able to play with friends in any reliable way. They either just cant connect, the game crashes when they do connect, a random UE crash within the first few minutes or if they do connect its so unstable its basically unplayable. And an issue thats not really an issue, just a pet peeve of mine, but holy ♥♥♥♥ is there a lot of cut scenes when there shouldnt be. Cut scenes into loading screens constantly. It feels like 50% of the game is useless cut scenes. Need to open a door? Cut scene. Need to step over some rocks? Cut scene. Enemy spawns? Cut Scene. An NPC wipes their ass? Cut Scene.

I want to love this game, I really do. When it runs, its a pretty damn fun game. That's the thing though. When it runs. I know, its a new release, its going to have flaws. (since when did new releases just not working become the norm?) But, even for it being a new release, this is the worst state I have ever seen a game be released in. If (and hopefully when) they fix the issues, this review will change. But in its current state, this game is absolutely not worth the price tag and thats just unfortunate because when its good, its good, but it is hardly good.

Well, for the 3 or so hours I got to play this game, it was alright. Just a typical survival game like all the rest. However, I am now unable to play the game at all. Once I go to where it loads the character creation, my entire client shuts down and has me send a bug report. No matter what I have tried, nothing has been able to remedy the issue. I have reinstalled the game, verified the integrety, firewalls off. Nothing seems to work. I have searched all over and even tried emailing the devs support team, and not a word from them or an answer. At this point, I have just given up trying. If you want to purchase this game, I would advise you to just burn the $30 instead as you would get more for your money that way.

Update
Leaving the old review up to show how far this game has come. Decided to try this game again after years to see if there has been improvement and boy has there been. What was once a mostly unplayable mess has turned into hours of enjoyment. Cheeks free, dongler dangling in the wind with not a care in the world. While it still is just a typical survival game it is also much more than that. The dungeons and bosses have all been thoroughly enjoyable. Honestly, I'm glad I gave this another shot.
