This was easily a day 1 purchase for me. A lot went into this fixing the flaws of Zenohell and expanding on new ideas. For starters, the game is overall more fine tuned for balance in difficulty and the ship choices than Zenohell imo. The game adds easy and hard routes to take so that less experienced players do not have to get crushed by the hard route. As the player has a choice of difficulty along the way, the game doesn't feel very cheap or unfair, and is not too overbearing or too much of a cakewalk.

The game also gives a good sense of rewarding the player. Complete stages, beat hard routes, get through stages without dying, and other tasks will give you additional tech points that go towards unlocking additional content. The game starts you off with limited continues unlike Zenohell, but you can earn more. The better you play, the faster the unlocks will come. Even if you credit feed with what you have to the end of the game you still get tech points so it gives everyone a chance that is not a hardcore shmup veteran.

Several new animations added to the player's ship for movement and ship banking are implemented as well, making them more visually appealing while playing. I feel that the detail of enemy sprites has gone up as well, especially one that I can't spoil in this review from it's predecessor. ESPECIALLY this one because it gave me chills seeing how much more menacing it appears this time around. Makes the one in the previous game look like a baby.

As many people pointed out with Zenohell that it's soundtrack was nice, the soundtrack for Zenodyne R is once again fantastic. A different approach is taken this time to the tune of a Sega Genesis sound chip. The way the visuals come together with the music, it really is incredible. It truly makes me feel like I'm playing a retro game, especially since this makes nods at a few other shmups along the way. It's enough to make me wonder how well this game could be imported to an actual Sega Genesis cartridge.

I really hope that other people have as much fun with this as I am, and that they also hold the same opinion that this is a step in a better direction than Zenohell. I'm not saying Zenohell was particularly bad, it's just this game feels more "right" with game mechanics and atmosphere.

For anyone in the SHMUPs community, shmups.system11.org, you know I was a tester for this since WAY back over a year ago. You may also remember me being one of the people streaming an early build not too long ago and showing off an Arcade full clear. It's remarkable to see how much this game has grown since it's origins and the journey was fun.

This game really does hail back to a time when things were more simple without a crazy tedious scoring system that may drive oneself to madness. It's fun, easy to get into, yet still hectic when playing to break scores, while offering enough variety in ships and modes to not be put down after one go. If you like games where you see your score climb to stupid high amounts on an exponential scale, this can make you smile. Also, make note that your bombs are tied both to survival and to scoring. Throw everything together and it should make for an interesting combination to see what everyone pulls off...

This was one I got because of trading cards for pennys a long time back, after that I didn't really play much. Playing it again more recently though, I can say that if you are a fan of shmups, more specifically of Tyrian, this might appeal to you. Depending on the mode you play, you will have choices of ships. There are 9 variants in arcade and survival that you play through the whole game with whichever you choose, while story lets you choose one of three base ships that can be customized with perks and three weapons of your picking.

This game is actually quite difficult, past easy and also normal after a few tries, it really kicks your ass. EDIT: There is actually a practice mode under new game, if you're going to play hard or insane you better practice the stages because the game is long and very difficult past normal.

The soundtrack is probably the highlight of this game, it is actually quite good and I will remember the boss theme for some time to come.

I see this game on sale often, if you play shmups and want something a little different than a traditional shmup these days, this might help to kill some time and at 2 dimes you're not losing anything trying it out. For full price, I would tread carefully unless you like the customization idea via Tyrian or older PC shmups or if you are already a shmup veteran. For shmup noobies, you may want to stick to easy/normal for this game. On hard/insane, this game is HARD.

The base game is a 10/10 puzzle game ANYONE that likes puzzle games should play. The game promotes 2-3 playthroughs to see all of the possible endings, and has multiple "routes" of side stories that can unfold while playing. Road to Gehenna is OK, but is much smaller than the base game and there only to SERIOUSLY challenge people who loved the base game (hope you got your connector tool understanding to the utmost highest level possible or you're going to have a BAD time).

Base game absolutely get whenever you are ready for a puzzle game that will spend half the game showing you how to utilize tools, then the 2nd half pushing the absolute limits of said tools to find the solutions to the challenges presented to you. Road to Gehenna pick up if you are dying to continue from where the base game ends or wait for a sale if you think you can wait. There are some oddball DLCs available for this game like replacing the voice of Elohim with Serious Sam and visiting prototype stages of early builds of the game, but these aren't really necessary and should be saved for a 2nd/later playthrough. Start with base, work from there depending how much you enjoy this game.

02/18/2016 EDIT: I came to be very surprised to see the huge EX update for this game, which added 3 difficulties + normal/hardcore selection, upgraded visuals, ship tweaks, and expanded features including voice acting for the story. Another big change is the update to the multiplier system, which only decreases your chain when the active chain meter hits 0 instead of flatout losing the entire thing. You can also go above x5 multiplier and keep chains more easily as it takes longer now before chaining becomes unforgiving in timing. Since there appears to be more of a legitimate scoring system with potential to carry it across entire stages, I can safely say that I would recommend this even at full price now.

This could be best described as a guilty pleasure SHMUP. It is more laid back than a typical shmup due to the fact that you can't "lose" or "game over" in the arcade mode as you will simply restart the stage you died on with score intact if you die. Normal uses health for your ship, while Hardcore is a one hit then restart the stage ordeal. The local scores saved don't differentiate Normal and Hardcore, so there's no particular reason to try Hardcore unless you want a challenge.

It is fun to take all of the ships for a spin and see what they are capable of, but there isn't too much really keeping people on here for an extended period of time after that. Endless Normal is the most fun in the long run because you'll compete with others on the steam leaderboard there and it just becomes funny to see how ridiculously stacked the odds become against you once you live longer than 15 minutes.
