TerraTech - one of the biggest and/or best sandbox vehicle-building/destroying games out there, despite a current lack of distinct features (which, fret not, are soon to come); and still going strong.

Build your initially tiny buggy from simple blocks and guns, and use it to destroy enemy machines and use their blocks for yourself, over and over, until you've amassed a mountain's worth of materials and built an unstoppable goliath of a war machine with them.
Or, perhaps conquest isn't your thing. Maybe you just want to see what there is to see in a plane made entirely from poles and struts. Or maybe you'll become an industry mogul, stripping the land clean of any and all resources and selling them to make millions.

Regardless, even after you've done all three, there's still more to do, and lots more on the way.

[Edit]: The newest corporation, Better Future, just got announced, which hardly anyone was expecting. Payload sure keeps you on your toes.

The way I see it, this game has had three "dark ages." One was insane repair costs that even drove some players bankrupt (in terms of in-game currency), and the next was a somewhat severe limit on what you could build and how you could build it. That limit came in the form of Robot CPU caps and over-tier restrictions. However, this was quickly abolished with the game's "Unleashed" update.

Since then, tiers have been removed, along with the varying-health/strength cubes, and as a replacement we received more painting/customization options, more parts, and "better, balanced" matchmaking based on Player Skill and Robot CPU (although let's face it; matchmaking will never be balanced).

Then in comes the Third Dark Age: Epic Loot. With this update, the game's Robopoints currency, which was a core game mechanic since the very beginning, was removed in favor of a random-drop style economy based on Salvage(Loot) Crates and Robits.

Now, players must work 10x harder to find the parts they want instead of simply buying the part using their hard-earned RP. This wouldn't be much of a problem, except for the fact that the mountains of other useless crap they get from the crates sells for barely anything. Not to mention, this update is considered by many to be not much more than a money-grabbing scheme. Now, instead of buying Premium time for a bonus to your income per battle, all it is is a better CHANCE at better gear. You're not even guarenteed to find anything good in these crates, Premium or not.

While there is still some fun to be had, it's incredibly rare, and despite Freejam's repeated attempts at making their community happy, the community (literally) isn't buying it.

Until something happens to rectify this situation, I can't say I reccommend this game.

--EDIT--

Robocraft is now in Beta, and so far the game economy seems to be more of a daily annoyance than an major problem. Only things most people complain about nowadays is the poor matchmaking and minor "so unbalanced and op plz nerf" occurances in weapon and movement part combinations.

I still have yet to play the reworked/new gamemodes, which for once actually seem decent. However, I still feel the game is sort of past its prime, and therefore I'm not changing my recommendation.

I have just stumbled upon a gem
This game is a great pastime for those who just want to build anything
There IS a learning curve though, and some parts are easy to learn, while others take a while
And unfortunately there's sometimes not enough servers or enough players
But other than that it's great

9/10 needs bigger playerbase

You will (not) die from cute overdose

Seriously though this game is amazing, despite it being a bit short at the moment

10/10 would hoard tabby slimes again
