I have sunk almost 1000 hours into this game from both my Xbox Game Pass hours and my Steam hours. Its definitely a fun game that is worth a try. Honestly there really isn't any other game like it. The Sea Of Thieves community is for the most part a friendly community. Yes there is toxicity but I would put roughly 1/4 of the community into that category. Getting started can be rough as a new player, specifically trying to learn the dynamics of the game; as well as learning what to do and not to do so your ship does not sink.

The game is basically a large sandbox, you have a map with islands and outposts darted around the map that you can explore; with something called "world events" that pop up randomly on the servers that you can go complete. World events are a good and fun way to get treasure to sell; which is ultimately the main goal of free roaming in the game. Selling treasure is the main way to make gold in the game, which will give you the ability to buy cosmetics and ships. There is no pay to win in the game, its only cosmetics which I can appreciate from a competitive standpoint. World events are PVE events but can quickly be contested by other pirates roaming the sea and then it can quickly turn into a PVP/PVE event, which is probably one of my favorite parts of the game. The PVP can be really fun and exciting, and is what I usually have the most fun doing now that I have completed all of the things there is to do in the game.

However; if PVP is not your thing, you can stay doing PVE related things such as Tall Tales ((Quests)), aswell as staying on the PVE servers. You could literally just roam the seas and trying to catch all of the fish in the game and complete achievements/commendations.

There is a skill gap in the game which is unfortunate. For the most part while in adventure mode you will run into pirates who are either really new at the game or extremely good at the game. Its seems rare for me to run into a pirate that is a perfectly good match in a fight.

The community is fun because its diverse; I have ran into every type of person imaginable in the sea of thieves and think that's a cool aspect of open crew / looking for group posts. Its a game that both adults and kids can enjoy.

I will say that I sometimes wish they would add more world events, and maybe another trading company. I would give the game a solid 4.5/5.0. Maybe a 4.0/5.0 on a bad day.
