This game is HARD. You don't get the luxury of spray'n'pray, and the maps are Very Messy and Clustered when they're not wide open and flat. You're going to lose hunters whether you want to or not, and developing personal attachments to that hunter is going to end in disappointment and heartbreak. This game is unforgiving, and relies on all your stoogely cunning to get in and out alive. But getting out with a bounty will require a partner, whose stoogely cunning rivals your own. So here are a few items to consider when playing this game.

1. Firefights will go from 0-100 in the blink of an eye, and it normally starts with your partner going down thanks to a long range sniper. The Bad News: You're alone til you revive your partner. Good news: If you're the one still standing it's cause they likely don't have an immediate plan for you. Just look out for flankers.

2. Gameplay is focused on collecting Bounties and killing monsters - Sort of. Collecting bounties will gain the most rewards and killing the monsters will also work for a hefty amount of XP Farming, but other players are seeking bounties as well. They'll kill you whether you have a bounty or not for the sheer cautionary measure of ensuring you don't ambush them once they have a bounty. Everything is dangerous.

3. Combat is slow, yet methodical. Your survival isn't dependent on your weaponry or gear (though it certainly helps). This is a Micro-Strategy game if ever there was one. Strategy is King and this game proves it through and through. It's not like Battlefield, Call of Duty, Fortnite or any other popular shooter these days. If you're looking for something new you're in the right place.

4. This Game Is Stressful. Wow. It's rare that a Video Game makes my heart race (and I cut my teeth on survival horror), yet the moment a bullet misses me and I have a chance of survival, I get stressed and start ducking. This game will stress you out a Lot, but once it's over, win or lose, you feel a sense of accomplishment, even if you didn't get the bounty.

5. You don't HAVE to get the bounty. A good idea I've discovered is Solo-running Bounty Hunt mode and collecting clues, then leaving. You level up your character safely, avoid major fire zones and get a lay of the land and the enemies. Sure there's Trials mode, but at least in Bounty Hunt you get the option to test your mettle against other players. Dangerous, sure, but at least it's there.

6. You can play this game with Steam User Swag Cat, who by far is my favorite companion since playing. If you're lucky enough to get him, he's a joy to play with. That being said, I've always had fun with partners. and honestly I haven't encountered much (if any) toxicity. The other players here are a Joy in my opinion, so either I'm very lucky or this community is nice.

Overall, I enjoy the experience and Please God I want more people to join. Thank you, goodnight.

A Slow-Burn of a horror game, it does become quite the scare once the third round of watch begins. Take note of sounds as they play a large part of this game's functionality, such as the scraping of desks and chairs, the sliding of steel, etc.,

Harthorn is a short, yet adequate, game worthy of its asking price. I hope to see more from the developer as they continue their work and I'd honestly say this was a good way to spend three hours.

Alright so uh. I? Hate this???? This is the worst thing ever. I Love Horror because the only trauma I can handle is terror. And this game??? This game has taken that from me. The sheer number of close calls I've had with The Bunnyman in his house is numerous enough to deter me from sleep.

Anyways!! This game comes with a free IRL Night Terror feature that will make you hate Malls and old rickety houses. If you don't handle horror well... Maybe skip this. But if you Do handle it well? This game will change that.

If I'm honest I impulse bought this because shopping on Steam makes me feel good, but it has also lead to many regretful purchases. I actually was 70% sure I wanted to just refund this before I even played it because I wanted something else. And I must say I have never been so glad to admit I was wrong. The short of it is: If you like Quake, Doom, The Evil Dead or even occultism in media, this game will do no less than surpass your expectations. As someone who went in looking for reasons to refund it, I can safely say that there are none inherent in the game itself.

First of all, no I can't tell you what the story here necessarily is. I don't really know myself. That being said, I generally need story to matter more than atmosphere, and atmosphere more than gameplay. Yet here we are: No defined story within the first 2 levels but I'm hooked by atmosphere and gameplay alone.

Graphics and Art Style - The graphics are dated - as you've noticed already - but add a sense of "I found this in an old storage unit and put it in my Windows 98 PC now it is possessed" feel. We can deduce that the graphics aren't modern at all, but I would argue that they are entirely essential to the art style presented here. If this game had modernized graphics, it would simply not work. This game has its charm in reminding one of sneaking crazy little games onto your computer as a kid and being absolutely astounded that such macabre visions not only exist, but are ready to be explored by you. Seriously, something feels wrong about playing this game but I mean that in the best way and I adore that. This is a feat rarely achieved in such triumphant success by other developers. I applaud.

The Gameplay - Your character is a hot knife and the game itself is a stick of room temperature butter. As your character slices through the world, I can't help but notice not only how smooth it felt, but also confining and nerve-wracking. You move at a full run it seems, and though I despise that in most other games I can't help but feel a sense of urgency here because why wouldn't you be running? Masked wizards, chainsaw men, demonic canines and worse are all calling for the spilling of your blood. I'd describe this play style as Panicked Yet Focused, because the only control I really lost was when something new appeared when I wasn't ready.

The Story - A demonic cult has taken over the farm and you must set aside your former life as a non-protagonist to destroy the evil which lies deep in the forests, barns and decrepit houses of madness. Am I wrong? Likely. Has the lack of straightforward story affected my opinion at all? Yes, because any game that can be This Good without having a clear story must be something truly special.

The Sound - I have a Sennheiser 550 Gaming Headset with Boom Audio 3D Sound Enhancer, for clarity. The sound is incredible and helps to truly express the horrors of this game world as the cultists refer to you as the Intruder, the creature of the night howl and scream at you and every strange noise, leak, click and pop of the world itself springs to life just to tear into your character. I really do appreciate the game's sound quality and the love which was put into it.

Honestly, the more you play, the more love you find put into this game. Again - I impulse bought this and wanted to refund it. All I needed was one small, tiny reason to do so. I am very petty and picky. Within 20 minutes of playing, I am ready to admit that I was wrong to ever doubt this game. I thank the developers for humbling me. My final score for this game is a Hesitant 9/10 for the simple fact that I haven't played enough to give it a 10. I felt a burning need to express this game's quality before continuing so I apologize for my sporadic review after only 20 minutes of play time. I do not review games often, but this one is special and deserves the praise.

I am going to join the lowest percentage of reviewers. This game isn't HORRIBLE. But it lacks logic and half the time seems to work against you and often times appears to pull the "Your Ancient Calvary lost to this Warrior cause I SAID SO". This game has caused so much frustration and I will likely not be playing it again for a long time.

If I were going to be as fair with this review as this game was with me, it would be a one-sided argument of anger and frustration, lined with bits of compliments. However, I'm going to give this game something it never gave me: A ten second head start and a bandage when I really needed it,

So for starters, let's be genuinely honest here; This is the most unique shooter experience I've ever dealt with. For starters, I've never played a game in which you fight armies of angry Russians armed with Iron Curtain weapons and even a few westernized weapons while I only have weapons with effective equivalence of Airsoft guns. Furthermore, every single person in the Zone is a better pitcher than anyone on any baseball team on earth. I mean, I have never been hit in the forehead with a grenade quite so often as I have been in in this game. I could cower behind a wall and say a prayer that I don't die and get hit with a grenade(Not the explosion, it literally bounces off my character) from half the combat platform away. Fast-Travel does exist, but it is quite literally the least convenient source of mobility since holding L2 to walk forward on a Playstation system.

I believe I've made enough statements on how bad it may be there, but there are in fact positives. I am basing this review off my own personal experience, so certain aspects which may be good or bad for me may not be experienced by you personally.

Now the start of the game is interesting enough, so long as you have a well enough understanding of the map and controls and how to utilize your PDA and the Artifact tracker. Seeing as I did not have a great understanding of these things, I went into the swamps and got half way to the second area of the game without completing the first two missions. So be warned, follow the yellow arrow and monitor the grey arrow as well. Now to the good aspects for real

Pros:
+Vast area to explore; The Swamps are interesting to explore but only so long as you can avoid the anomalies.
+Many different weapons and upgrades available
+Random encounters with Mutants make this a horror experience as much as a shooter
+Upgrades have weight to them, just as they have consequences
+Buildings offer a lot of atmosphere

Cons:
-Fast Travel can be the most expensive habit in the game
-Most buildings have the most amazing atmosphere, but are too often empty of much worth exploring
-Invisibility also means transparent/not able to be touched physically by weapons
-T is for Tedium!
-The ending sequence of the game is literally the best reason to Rage Quit
-Game Breaking Bugs(Example: If you retrieve your gear before you go into Duty territory and talk to the commander, the option to talk to anyone is lost and the game can no longer be continued)
-Pistols do not have iron sights but assault rifles do(Contrast to the older game, Shadow of Chernobyl)
-Dude from Freedom Faction MAY TRY to sell you drugs

Overall, it's not a great game. It's not a good game. It's barely within the respective zone for being an Okay game. I gave this game a legitimate try. I gave it serveral tries. As a matter of fact, on the last sequence of the game, I gave about sixty-four tries. However, if I were to count only the amount of times I restarted the campaign, it would be six. Three of those were due to glitches, three were due to Laptop changes and difficulty adjustments.

My Final Rating for this game is
A Red First-Aid Kit/10

It's fine, but doesn't do much for you other than familiarize you with some controls and environments of the game, even if it isn't of a similar layout to the other games. It's good enough to hold you over until you can get the other two far superior versions of the game(Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat). While it may quench your thirst for a Nuclear-Disaster based First-Person-Shooter, it is like comparing Resident Evil to the Resident Evil Remake; Only imagine that the Remake came out first.

You can literally skip this installment.

I am writing this review as someone whom has not eve played the first game successfully due to an error the game has with starting a New Game. I have Windows 7 and 2GB RAM so low res games such as these are a bit of a necessity for me at this point. The "Gothic" series seemed like a fun RPG series upon initial inspection, given that the top several reviews for this game are all positive. My thought was "It's like playing the steel-clad knight games full of mythic beasts and monsters which I've dreamed of playing!" And then, I bought the game. I downloaded the first one, naturally, and intended on playing when I came across the issue which caused the game to crash and tell me that some sort of error had ocurred. I had, obviously, changed around some settings, so I tried again. Upon clicking "New Game" the same issue ocurred and the game crashed.

Given MY experience with the game, I cannot recommend it to anyone. However, if someone could tell me of any way to fix this issue I would greatly appreciate it.

This game as a single-player experience is rather bland and pointless, however, the exploration factor is cool.

PRO TIP: Play this game with friends. Call them on the phone and play it together from the start. The character build is pretty cool, but beware the fact that you can't change your character, so try not to have the same characters as each other.

Clans are completely pointless. Unless you have a friend-base of 10 people to make a clan with, there's no point.

Missions aren't so bad, but cooperative exploration is amazing in my opinion.

Other than that, it's not a bad game. I wish there were more games like this though
