Fallout 4 is game you should only get when there is a steam sale. Here's why

Main Story:

The main quest, whilst interesting during its first playthrough, becomes rather repetitive after a while. Its always the same quests you have to do to progress the games content, the same places you have to clear out. You cant even deviate from this slightly, so it automatically becomes tedious.
And the effort doesnt pay off either. You get a mass effect type of ending, where either group A,B, C or D wins the conflict. And there is no reason to go for the endings either, the reward is a one time big xp reward and some legendary items that can easily be outclassed by stuff you can find on the map regularly or make yourself.

The RPG aspect is very weak as well. The only meaningful choice you make is either help group A,B,C or D. How you go about achieving the ending for said group doesnt matter either, there are no deviations. You being good or bad doesnt matter.

The gameplay:

The vanilla gameplay is just awful. Your damage perks are tied to fixed levels and increase in 20% steps to a max of 100% bonus damage whilst the enemys gain increased health per each level you gain. The end result being that some weapons are just completely useless once you have gained about 20 to 30 levels. You also gain hp per level, so you having high endurance doesnt really matter. The endgame boils down to you being a bulletsponge with 1k hp trying to magdump a 3k hp bulletsponge with 30 dmg bullets.

There are some positive things as well. The gun modding is super fun and feels very rewarding. The exploration in the game is also very enjoyable and goes hand in hand with the normal gameplay loop. The companions have additionally recieved a big upgrade from previous titles and now have a lot more interactions. Unfortunately the only ones really being impacted by the main story are the ones which are tied to the factions. All other unaffiliated comanions remain unaffected by each ending.

Now whilst the gun modding system offers a lot of options, the things it is being used on do not. Most guns look look and sound awful, they can best be described as a cavemans interpretation of a firearm. This is especially unfortunate considering previous titles had semi modern firearms in their games.

If you are looking for a game where you can explore ,loot the map and build up your base, then this game might be worth considering with mods., If you are strictly looking for a classic RPG experience , then its a hard pass. This game doesnt offer anything in that regard.
