As much as I wish it was otherwise, this game is not worth the price tag currently on it at $30. It's seriously not worth it. It really isn't even worth half that for what little you do get. There's no voice acting, which could have explained some of the price. Amnesia: Memories has more content, is voiced, and is a third of the price. (If you haven't played through that one yet, pick it up instead and avoid The Men of Yoshiwara: Kikuya.)

This game plays out like someone tried to combine an awkward teen drama with adult content.

All the story arcs are extremely linear and your choices matter very little - your chosen honey is going to fall for you regardless of your responses. But if you can woo him extremely well, you get a marriage out of it in the end.

To salt the wound, the MC does not fit the profile of a person who has grown up on an island where men are all but confined to a single profession/district. For the most part, you play a character who is absolutely and utterly stupid - on the level of asking yourself how is she still breathing (you'd think this girl never talked to anyone with life experience). In the prologue, she's knowingly done something to break the laws of Yoshiwara - a sort of crime with SEVERE punishment (torture and potentially death) - and she is fully aware of this. In two arcs, she admits to doing so without any attempt to keep someone from overhearing her (such as whispering it in someone's ear).

For the most part, the MC is a spineless crybaby unless the plot suddenly demands she has a hint of courage or backbone for all of two minutes. Genuine threats against her are blithely ignored as she stumbles through almost every arc going to an expensive brothel to spend her nights being absolutely and utterly terrified by experienced prostitutes when they barely touch her in any kind of suggestive way. Even after she's been had by her chosen beloved multiple times near the arc's end, the MC still behaves like an embarrassed virgin having her first experience all over again.

While I enjoyed most of the backstories pertaining to the male characters, the utter idiocy of the MC really took away from the enjoyment. She's supposed to be a middle to latter teenager who works at the docks under her mother who is a shipping agent. She should not be nearly as sheltered as she is portrayed considering the types of people she would be working with day in and day out. She should have been brought up with some understanding that her life would, eventually, revolve around the red light district because that's where she's going to be getting her own children in time (in fact, in one of the arcs, her mother makes it clear that the MC was conceived in Yoshiwara).

The other game in this series has a marginally better MC and is half the price. If you have to choose between the two, I'd recommend Ohgiya over Kikuya. In both cases, though, I'd recommend getting them during a sale if you absolutely have to have either one or both.

Early Access Review
You're going to see a lot of people butthurt that the game is coming out of development. This game is not a bait-and-switch. This game is not a scam. This game has legitimate content and is playable even as it is right now and it has replayability.

When the Radiant Team started this game after a successful kickstarter, they had some grand plans for a small team of people. They worked for several years trying to achieve those plans. Radiant was picked up by Riot over a year ago. Riot has said it's time to be done with the game.

Riot is the boss and the team has to listen, whether they want to or not.

I have owned this game for a very, very long time. I've got almost 1,500 hours as of writing this review. I have seen a lot of changes over the course of time since I purchased this game so many years ago. I would not have put in so many hours if this game was as bad as the butthurt club wants you to think.

This game has come a long way since the beginning. The dev team is very emotional that they can't completely finish what they started. But, that doesn't make this a bad game. I have gotten more than my money's worth out of the $25 I paid.

But when the game officially comes out of Early Access, it will only be around $20. More content will be added when it does.

Do I wish that the dev team could have continued? Yes.
Am I sad that the game is coming out of Early Access? Yes.
Do I think what's there now isn't worth it? No.

If you like cute city builders, you very well may like this game. If you like games where you can design your own structures and watch them being built in-game, you may very well like this game.

Despite what others would have you think, you are getting content. You can play as characters from one of three different factions. You can play in one of three different biomes. And that's simply the game itself. There is also a ton of content from the community which has very faithful modders who have put in a lot of hours on their own.

When this game releases officially, I'm going to miss the weekly dev streams where they interact with the community. Alas, all good things come to an end.

Wait for the game to come out of Early Access to buy so you're getting all the content available at the official price.

This game had a LOT of potential. I loved the premise of a twisted take on the Red Riding Hood tale and I did get that. What I got, also, was an entirely too short button masher. Highly disappointing to say the least.

The graphics are absolutely beautiful. Such utterly gorgeous scenery really gives immersion into the world. The bgm helped that immersion along. The voice over of Red speaking in rhyme fit as well and, while it likely will annoy some, I found it rather charming and clever on the part of the script writers. My only complaint for the female voice actress was that she seemed to be trying too hard to adopt a sultry tone which caused her voice to be too 'breathy' in some parts of the dialog.

I really, really wanted this game to be worth the $10 I threw at the developers. I wanted to love this game with every bit of my gamer heart. I absolutely loved the little details such as seeing Red's perfect reflection in the mirror of the first room when you start the game.

Now, I don't normally have any problems with button mashing. Some button mashing is expected as you work to figure out combos with the basic attacks, picking up the rhythm of the game to be most effective. The drawback here was that Woolfe has no actual combos. You get a basic attack and a hard attack that you have to spam like crazy to progress. That's it.

The fixed camera angles will get you killed in a certain segment. I invented a whole new series of vulgar verbal combinations because of the camera. It has to be the worst one I've dealt with in any platformer game.

I beat this game, start to finish, in two hours and three minutes. For $10, I expected a bit more for my hard-earned money. Beautiful graphics and bgm do not make a game worth five bucks per hour.

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this game to anyone at the $10 price tag. Sadly, with how it disappoints in the end, it's not even worth half that. If you want to get the game, wait until it's at least -70% so you don't feel cheated.
