Early Access Review
Dead Effect's a strange beast. It's a F2P Android game reworked into a paid Steam release, which usually sends up nothing but red flags. Mercifully, your $5 purchase is actually put to decent use. The developers have included 3 levels with this release and a whole bevy of weaponry to outfit your arsenal. Strong enemies will also drop weapon upgrades and unlocks for free so you have to grind less. Gold bars are dropped as well, which is crucial given they pay the way for your revives. The gameplay is considerably slower than most FPS's and ammo management is somewhat more pressing than your average shooter affair. The game isn't survival horror by any stretch of the imagination but does do a decent job building a gory, creepy environment.

Enemies are your standard fair for a zombie survival shooter. You have slow walkers, runners, hurlers, chainsaw guys, one or two bosses and a few odds and ends. It's nothing special but the game throws enough zeds your way that you'll be happy variety is limited. Headshots are as important as ever and will help you survive the most dangerous of opponents. Level 3 is a tad unfair in that it throws a billion zombies at you without offering terribly many places to go. This is a DOOM-like corridor shooter, minus the faster and more responsive movement.

Your enjoyment of Dead Effect is dependent on what you expect from a $5 mobile port. The game is decent and offers some playability but in its early state, has a small amount of content. It's a short experience with multiplayer and more levels potentially inbound. If you're looking to splatter some more undead brains on the wall, turn your own brain off and pick this up. If you're looking for a deep, nuanced zed-hunting experience, look elsewhere.
