As much as I hate to say it, for me this is the most disappointing game in the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy. There are many problems with this game, but the two most important are its story and its stale mechanics.

Lara being completely unlikable is perhaps the biggest reason why Shadow's story failed. Lara is no longer the desperate young woman stranded after a shipwreck who was so easy to empathize with in the original reboot. She is now a bloodthirsty killer with an unhealthy obsession towards destroying a generic evil organization. But I don't dislike Lara because she is now a killing machine, I dislike her because a killing machine is all she is. In order for a player to be invested in a story, they must be invested in its characters. The original Tomb Raider reboot made players feel sympathetic to Lara by making her a victim of violence and hardship. But as she grew in strength in each game, she has found nothing else to hook players with. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, she is not a victim anymore, instead, she is nothing. She has no character: she never cracks jokes, she talks in a monotonous voice, and her decisions are generic... She is a shadow (heh) of the older Lara that a generation of gamers fell in love with. As a result, every scene containing Lara in this game (a.k.a every scene in the game) feels dry. Combined with forgettable allies and villains, an insistence on unneccessarily dark themes, and a complete lack of levity, Shadow of the Tomb Raider's story could not engage or let alone interest me in any way.

Gameplay wise, the game is almost identical to 2015's Rise and 2013's original. Tomb Raider (2013)'s mechanics were fun and exciting when the game released, though it's combat system was relatively weak. Rise of the Tomb Raider lifted it's gameplay almost 1:1 from Tomb Raider (2013), but it's massively improved graphics helped add some novelty. Shadow of the Tomb Raider adds almost nothing to the table gameplay wise, but more importantly does nothing to fix the glaring problems with its existing mechanics. Combat is immensly frustrating: enemies are far too tanky and don't even flinch when shot, close quarters encounters (almost all combat scenarios) do not suit most of Lara's arsenal, the cover system is unreliable etc. Even the traversal mechanics are showing it's age: Lara's movements feel floaty and sometimes imprecise, difficult jumps are made even harder by bad geometry that stop Lara in midair... All of these are problems that were also present in the previous game, but I expected them to be fixed 3 years later considering there are no massive graphical leaps this time around.

By the end of this game, Lara's origin story is over and she is ready to embark on a fresh new journey with the skills of the true Tomb Raider. Hopefully by the next time we see her, she will also have the charm and character of the true Tomb Raider, and the gameplay behind her will be as excellent as a Tomb Raider game deserves to be.

Cim Taurus. What you really mean is a woman with an SJW agenda and yes it is. The whole thing feels like it was written by a patronising kindergarten teacher who has to educate us in cultural diversity. None of which was any relevance to the game.

I almost hate to say this because I am sure it will be taken the wrong way, but here goes anyway.

During the game I was so bored by the story. At one point, and I can't remember where, I was in a particular encoutner that made me have the thought "This game's story was written by a woman." Not that that made it bad by any means, but something in the story tipped me off to that. AND the story was bad, just boring bad not omg I can't watch this bad.

So I waited during the credits at the end and sure enough, lead writer and half of the remaining writing team all women. And that shouldn't matter, but it shouldn't matter because I should not be able to tell. And I could.

Which sits really bad with me because I am not misogynistic. So what do I do with that?

Either way the story was the weakest point for me. An enemy I did not care about being brought down by a hero I could not get behind.

I respect people not liking Lara' personality, but I do think they've set up quite well why she is that way.

She is a young woman with a brashness that hasn't yet been tempered by experience, and has been through hell. She is up against a nefarious collective with much greater resources than her own, which is also the same group that left her orphaned.

Lara is driven by rage, desperation, and self importance (for want of a better word) as she has very few people she can rely on. The game shows her realizing how obsessed she is with Trinity, and living up to her fathers legacy, and how she negects her few remaining friends.

You may not like that journey, prefering your mass murderers to be in the unrealistic happy go lucky vein of Nathan Drake / Indiana Jones etc, but putting aside personal taste you may agree it has been well structured.

She's now killing the people of the organization seemingly responsible for her father's death and everything wrong with her life. This transisition IS her character.

Boy they are REALLY not looking forward to the part of their life when she wears skimpy clothing and does Olympic-tier gymnastics, are they. I think this is the third nuLara game that's another origin story.

It is a game told how Lara became a killing machine, and how she turns back to a normal, a good girl later after she realized how blood thristy she is. :)

Let me say this: i just played the first chapter but i was feeling like it was a missed half-horror game.
I totally loved the concept of an adventurer searching for a treasure but i heavily disliked that its overall atmosphere was heavy and not cheerful at all.

If ever this last title is consolidating that dark/negative atmosphere that was still present from the beginning.

A missed opportunity, as for me.

I get the impression that you didn't actually pay attention to the game, just watched the screen and pressed the buttons... if even that. I can't fathom how you played the game at all and made a review like this. I found Lara to sympathetic on multiple occasions, making jokes and chatting with her best mate all the time, connecting with other characters. When she interacts with other people, you get to see that's she not the simple cold-killer that you make her out to be. The gameplay, movement, and combat systems are quite solid and enjoyable and even exciting; everything works exceedingly well. Perhaps you want something from Tomb Raider series that has never been there (even in the reboot series, but especially in older games). Everyone else should be aware that this review really is very far from being accurate. People who actually enjoy the Tomb Raider games ought to disregard it.
