Early Access Review
DISCLAIMER: This is literally the first review I've ever done for a game. I am doing it because I felt it was necessary to help put an end to all the negative reviews. Instead, I will break up the pro's and con's into "Experiences" and "Expectations".

EXPERIENCES:

EDIT: This game does have a cash shop for COSMETIC items only. There is absolutely NO pay to win archetecture here despite the overwhelming ignorance below this detailed review. NOTE: All cash items can, and will be bought with in game gold, including the Tax Free land plots and house deeds. Do not let the negative reviews try to sway you from this excellent title. Thank you.

Alright! So where to begin? Well, I got into the game roughly a week ago now. I have been working really close with the sommunity managers to get all the information I could for this review. I was there during the end of R16. I was present for all the social events that were hosted by the diehard community. From the PaxLair One Year Anniversary, to the final BMC Grid Iron PvP event, and then some. For those of you who don't know what either are, PaxLair is a completely player-owned town within SotA (At the time, PaxLair was settled unofficially within the town of Valemark but now is it's own official town made possible by the Devs). BMC Grid Iron is hosted by a dominate guild (Britannia Mining Company). It is a fully customized, underground fight club where players place bets on fighters and can walk out with large sums of gold. Both events were extremely interesting to be a part of, and even moreso considering how warm and welcoming the community is to strangers.

Now we are in R17. Many more events are planned and I've even had the chance to attend some thus far. Including the first ever, exclusive walkthrough of the Metropolis of PaxLair with Winfield, the owner of the city. Which at the end of the tour, the Dev's jumped in game and danced around with the players, all while adding everyone they could see to thier friend's list. Something I haven't ever seen occur in a game to date.

The combat in the game is considerably solid at it's current state. I, and many people who have put considerable time into SotA picked up the mechanics relatively fast. Though, it currently is a bunch of hotkey spamming, there is a method to it. Especially when stacking status effects and using such effects to boost the damage, buffs, or healing of the other abilities, or when creating what the game calls "Combos". Fighting a group of cultists has never been so tactical.

The classes in SotA are the best I've ever seen in a game. Because there are no classes. Much like how Bethesda sold everyone on Skyrim with the slogan "You are what you play", this title boasts it louder. There are seperate skill trees for many different skills. Each with their own perks and "Castable" hotkey's. There are two catigories to choose from when allocating skillpoints: Combat and Magic. You are free to take out skills, and put in skills whenever you wish to completely change your build of your character with absolutely no hassle. So if you are a heavy armor wearing, two handed axe wielding tank, and you feel it's time to be a light armor wearing, dual wand wielding, magic glass cannon, then go for it.

Granted, there are a few instances where the game can be a pain. Though, you must all realize, and plant into your heads that this is a Pre-Alpha. So here's some expectations for all you new players.

Expect some animations to be buggy.
Expect some frame rate drops in bigger cities.
Expect the combat to be glitched at times.
Expect many quests to not be fully integrated yet.
Expect some confusion when talking to NPC's until you get the hang of keywords.
Expect to run around blindly until you get a guide to help show you the ropes.
Expect to spend quite a bit of gold on repair kits until you learn the crafting trade.
Expect to die and be a ghost.
Expect to die by a ghost.
Expect to have your characters wiped with many new releases.
Expect to be blown away when you discover there is an actual radio station hosted by the players in game and they take requests. (Amber Raine and others)
Expect to actually be accepted into a thriving community of dedicated players who have been around for nearly 30 years due to the work of Richard Garriott and Starr Long. Do not be afraid to contact someone and ask for help.

Whew. Okay, so that essentially covers just about everything.

Listen, we know the game isn't 100% completed. The Overworld map itself is only about 10% done and it's still extremely massive. There are bugs, and it's okay to embrace them for the time being. Just be open-minded, experiment with the mechanics, RP with the community at times, and have a blast doing it.

TLDR;

Richard Garriott fought Star Long in front of the whole town - 32/10, would choose sides again.

Even if this review was accurate at the time, which it wasn't, they've since add Crowns of the Obsidian which are a Premium Currency and give direct P2W bonuses, including 50% more stamina, reduction to armor damage etc.

Technically, these occasionally drop in game, and you can trade other players in game gold (also legally real money tradable) so the blind believers claim it's not really P2W... except of course it is, just like any other P2W game that allows their Premium Currency to also be traded.

Original review author seems to have long since abandoned the game however. Perhaps they realised what the majority of us have since realised as well, eh?

What youre are saying regarding "No buy to win system" is not entirely true: Store items are indestructable and un-lootable. So especially if you do PvP within SotA at least store Armor is a must.

Then the Store offers items which are nor craftable in-game. Which shoukd leave quite some crafters rather frustated. Not to mention the impact of not degrading items on the already disfunctional game economy.

PS: I dont own the steam version. I did buy the game directly from the SotA website.

Even so, if you want to continue drinking the Kool-Aid and ignore how items like this *DO* make a difference to the gaming experience when comparing the "haves" and the "have nots", then feel free.

I, however, remember how Starr and Dallas smoothed over potential anger about the most recent pledge tier changes by adding a pile of expert crafting stations to tiers who were likely to be upset with the changes (e.g., Lords):

Finally, there are even indicators that normal vs expert stations will have some effect on the quality of materials produced from that crafting station:

"The way I understand it, the quality of the item produced is apparently dependent on both your crafting skill and the "skill level" (for lack of a better term) of the crafting station itself. The reason I said potentially is because even if you have an expert level crafting station, the quality of the item produced could still be low due to your really poor crafting skill."

Furthermore, while I've yet to see specific details about this, there are many indicators that upgrading crafting stations to expert stations will be relatively costly and there were some hints that the differences between stations might have some bearing on things like maintenance of the total number of mats used/success rate while crafting items:

" In a interview I think it was Darkstarr who said the best machines would be publicly available. Basically it was said some time the advantage of the founder expert benches was that it was expensive to upgrade a normal bench to expert. Something about maintenance as well. "

First, there are things like...

Advantages of owning an expert crafting station:

1. Potential to craft higher quality items (see smack's post above).

2. Avoid long lines at public crafting stations (depending on location).

3. Convenience. If you need more of a certain raw material, you can simply leave the rest of the components there and run out and get some more. With public crafting stations, you have to have all of the raw materials in your personal inventory (which could be difficult if you have a limited number of slots).

As the devs have repeatedly said, the prices currently found in game (on items like crafting stations) are placeholders and are very likely to change and will be balanced upon release, so citing their current inexpensive price is hardly a fair indicator of what people can expect when the game is actually live. Also, how can you easily dismiss the benefits of receiving piles of EXPERT crafting stations at higher end pledges?

Also, the higher tier pledges come with so many lot deeds and housing deeds per pledge that the market will flooded with them in due time. Worst case scenario, you don't get a tax-free lot right away. Exactly how does not having a tax-free lot constitute a pay to win system? You get more gold from questing than you could ever need to pay the taxes anyhow. And housing bonus are non-existant. No special buffs for specific houses that could break PVP. No special, powerful gear that could break questing.

And I know you will use the gear you DO get from pledging as another frail point to argue, but I assure you, the armor you craft, even the most basic of them, are much more useful than the essentially cosmetic cloaks and helms you get from pledging.

I appreciate your rebut. However, you are wrong, I'm afraid.

As I stated, the tax free lots will be available for in game gold on the public market. Same with the tools used for crafting. They are as I type this and it's only a fraction of the total amount in circulation. You do get them complimentary for higher tier pledges, yes. However, the crafting tools do not add stats to your crafting abilities whatsoever. That is still entirely dependent on your skill allocations. Furthermore, to purchase more crafting tools in game costs roughly a whopping 2-6 gold. At this point, you are just nitpicking for the sake of arguement. Now with the crafting stations. The stations do not add more recipes, which would be the only thing that would be a p2w issue. Not to mention, again, you can purchase the crafting stations for no more than a few hundred gold a piece.
