Solid, all around well-made retro-styled metroidvania game. And unlike many adult-themed games, the adult aspects are not misused as a substitute for quality, nor do they come across as an out-of-place afterthought.

I would recommend this game to other players, except I'm too busy being a cat and helping robots. MReeow!

(FWIW, I'm reviewing this WITH both DLCs, I haven't tried the game without the DLCs.)

Don't get me wrong, this is the best, closest attempt we've seen to a "definitive edition" of Project Diva so far. If you're addicted to Project Diva like I am, it's a very worthwhile must buy. If you're looking to try your first Project Diva game, this is the one to get (although I still think "Project Diva F" and "Project Diva F 2nd" on PS3 are ALSO very good entry points, but they're harder to buy and have less content.)

There's a lot they did right here, better than any previous entry in the series, for example:

(Plus)+ This works VERY WELL on PC, even with gamepads! Doesn't feel like a cheap console port.

(Plus)+ Lets you choose between using Playstation, XBox, or even Generic-Arrow button icons for the actual gameplay. (And also some weird combinations that I don't really understand the point of, but hey, if you like them, go nuts!)

(Plus)+ Allows you to choose and switch between both classic or PS4 Future Tone's "plastic-figurine" visual rendering styles.

(Plus)+ Tons of outfit/character customization options that used to be DLC are included out-of-the-box, even the extra characters.

(Plus)+ Includes BOTH versions of the "Senbonzakura" visuals! (I like the one from Project Diva F personally, but the other one is good too!)

The reason I chose "Don't Recommend" is not because I don't recommend this, but rather to protest the (possibly nitpicky) things that prevent this from being the full definitive edition that Project Diva fans really, honestly deserve at this point. The things that "Sega Don't" (if you know, you know).

(Minus)- For as many songs as there are (including more of my favorites than I expected!), there are STILL plenty that are missing, even if you've never played any of the Japan-only releases.

(Minus)- This ONLY supports the same set of gameplay controls from PS4's "Project Diva: Future Tone". The PS3's "Project Diva F" and "Project Diva F 2nd" each had their own slightly different set of controls for anything beyond the basic up/down/left/right. Neither F's nor F 2nd's system is supported here. Not even for the songs that were in F or F 2nd. ONLY the "Future Tone" system is supported. I find this to be a real disappointment because I personally much prefer the F and F 2nd gameplay styles. Your mileage may vary.

(Minus)- This lacks the optional translated lyrics that Project Diva F 2nd had. Even for the songs that were in F 2nd.

(Nitpick)- Browsing costumes and accessories really, really needs a two-dimensional grid view. There's FAR too much available for this "horizontal list" view to be practical.

(Nitpick)- Even though some songs only support certain difficulty levels, it's very awkward to try to browse "ALL songs regardless of what difficulties they support". So it's hard you know you're not missing any songs just because of the difficulty level you happen to be browsing with.

(Nitpick)- Several of the game's options aren't even located anywhere within the "Options" menu. Instead, they're in a completely different place. A minor annoyance, but a very strange, intuitive one.

(Big Personal Nitpicky Minus For Me)- For the song "World's End Dance Hall", this is COMPLETELY MISSING the visuals used in PS3's "Project Diva F"! I LOVE that version of the video! But instead of including both versions like they did for "Senbonzakura", they only included one version of "World's End Dance Hall" and it's not the one I really, really like!! Poo!!!

The KMFDM Superpower of eroge: This game makes me feel like a real woman.

Ok, obscure references aside, this is a genuinely good Qix clone. Very respectable overall production quality across the board.

As for the adult portion of the content...well, however you may feel about it one way or another, the provided videos and screenshots are an accurate and fair representation. So however you've already decided you feel about them...you're not wrong.

Some reviews have commented about this game's difficulty...

See, here's the thing about videogame difficulty...

There are two kinds of gamers:

1. Old-school gamers who want a challenge that is not only both fair and balanced (ie, a "fox repellent"), but also requires the gamer to put at least some minimal effort into learning how to play the game well, and getting better at it.

2. New-school gamers who want to breeze through a storyline and never attempt any single level more than about once or twice.

This game is an old-school Qix clone. It is a game for group #1. It is very much NOT for group #2.

To wit: I've already completed all the levels in this game within four hours (and want more). I never once used the "h" key 'fast' cheat code from the game's update. I'm not even REMOTELY a competitive gamer, Not in the slightest. I can't even do ANY multiplayer Call of Duty, Battlefield, Smash Bros, etc, worth even half a ♥♥♥♥. But this...A few hours and all the levels are done. The last several completed while outright drunk. Currently just working on redoing about five levels I don't have a full "three hearts" on.

It's NOT a super-difficult game. It's not a super-easy game, either. But in true "group #1" style, it's a very fair and respectable little challenge. It just isn't for "group #2": If you expect to beat every game without any real conscious effort, it isn't for you.

"Mighty Gunvolt" was fantastic, but this...This title suffers from the same "kitchen sink gameplay" syndrome that broke Mighty No. 9.

But worse than that, the fullscreen (ie non-windowed) mode doesn't even work, and after TWO YEARS the devs haven't spoken a peep about it: https://steamproxy.net/app/774651/discussions/0/1639792569834072452/

Refunding...

This is a perfect example of how Steam's "good/bad" rating system is terribly inadequate.

I can't recommend this game purely because of technical reasons. It does not work with any DualShock or DualSense controllers unless you go out of your way to "trick" the game into thinking you're using an XBox One/Series controller by using the third party DS4Windows tool.

This is just not acceptable for any paid product.

Fundamental flaws:
- Menus are not fully functional with a controller.
- DPad doesn't work unless you manually configure it with steam input.

I would highly recommend this, but it fails at basic fundamentals and desperately needs an update to fix them:

- There is no fullscreen mode. Windowed only.
- Doesn't support DPad, instead you have to manually configure steam input to map the dpad directions to left analog stick.

There's no excuse for any game on steam to not have either of these "just work" right out of the box.
