Not sure I've played enough to say for sure but it's been pretty good so far.

Word of caution to buyers. The game seems pretty good and i was enjoying it but it seems like the controls can sometimes just be kind of broken. Around the time i fought the first boss i noticed inconsistencies in the inputs that kept making me take damage. Sometimes after a roll my character would refuse to aim his weapon, most of the time it worked simply by holding the aim button as i rolled but then randomly he would stand up and his melee weapon would appear in his hand instead and he would perform no action for about five seconds, neither aiming nor meleeing even if i repressed the button before snapping out of it. Other times i would fully aim down the sights and press the fire button, only for my character to suddenly switch to melee and swing instead.

I tried to replicate both of these bugs outside of the bossfights with different timings but i couldn't seem to get them with any consistancy. Looking up my problem i was able to find a thread of people over a year ago reporting the same problem with no one able to find a fix. My other friends didn't encounter this issue so I suspect it is tied to hardware in some way but as is renders the game basically unplayable.

Leaving a negative review because these new PQs remind me yet again how terrible the AI in this game can be. The fact that AI prioritze knockaway over doing thier actual combos or supers makes me want to scream, any support AI you bring just kicks the enemy out of your combos and the enemy will just blow all thier stamina with homing kicks and waste your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time. This would be annoying enough if it wasn't for their god aweful target finding. If you are getting stunlocked by two enemies friendly AI they will standby and watch but as soon as you start a combo they need to get in and shut that ♥♥♥♥ down.

I played 2 quests in my most recent session and after them i just don't want to play the game anymore. I ran out of time in my mission because the AI both ally and enemy seemed determined to make it impossible to play. 4 friendly AI on the fireld but the two enemys get to mercilessly stunlock me without any interuption, as soon as I finally get the attention of 1 of them both of my friendly AI dogpile them and make it impossible for my strike based character to land a hit, I switch targets to the other enemy and suddenly they both are suddenly attacking him now and the one i was orignally fighting is now attacking me from out of lock on. For almost the entire fiteen minutes of mission time I am either watching myself flying away in knockbakc animation or watching my lockon target sailing out of my range as I whiff yet another super attack.

The actual content of this DLC is fine but the method to unlock it is just irritating. Another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ set of missions to run seven times each to get all the moves, an experience better cheesed with spammy abilities and friends then actually enjoyed as a Dragonball fighting experience. This game has been out for like two years and somehow after all this time the AI has barely improved since XV1. They still only use like 2 of thier combos, never use thier transformations, rarely use ultimates and somehow succeed to be both in your way and never around when you need them. If they expect me to keep paying for these DLCs the least they could do is put in more than the bare minimum amount of effort in designing the missions that unlock the new content.

After picking up Dark Souls remastered and having a blast replaying the classic souls I decided I wanted to give Dark Souls 2 another shot. It had been several years since my first playthrough and coming at 1 agian with a more veteren perspective was so fun I wanted to continue through the series and see how dark souls 2 felt now that I had gotten gud.

The problem was a few hours in I found myself struck by how much fun I wasn't having. At it's core I never felt the souls series wanted to be unfair, Dark Souls 1 was a wonderful dark fantasy RPG with a tough but honest combat system. enemys did a lot of damage but Iframe dodge rolls and parrying gave the player ample tools to take comand of any fight. Fastforward to Dark Souls 2 and I feel the team in charge of making the game missed the point. Dark Souls became popular for its difficulty but at it's heart the difficulty was more of a feature of the combat system but the DS2 team took the tongue in cheek "Prepare to Die" mentality a bit to litteraly and left us with this sad excuse for an entry into my favorite series.

DS2 is just not a smartly made game and it walks the wrong side of what I consider the difference between being difficult and being challanging. Figuring out how to avoid the traps in Sens Fortress is challanging. Making it past the silver night archers for the first time is challaning. Navigating through blight town is challaning. What I mean by challange is somethign that tests a player's ability to problem solve. All the areas I mentioned have a clear design intent behind them. Every cleaver and boulder in Sens has an intended way to avoid them, but also several clever ways to take advantage of them. Sure Sens expects you to run down the stairs where the boulders are rolling down and enter the door off to the side, but you can also poise backstep through them and skip a little bit.

The reason I bring this up is that after the fifteenth gank roomwhere the only level design to speak of is a gang of identical enemies all keen to stunlock I start to think Dark Souls 2 has missed the point. Dark Souls 2 is difficult. A lot of ♥♥♥♥ gets thrown at the player at once, and while not every gank is inherintly lazy, it's hard not to think "Wow, this spider boss would be a boringly simple enemy if it wasn't for the five mini spiders they spawned at the begining to artificually make the boss's movews harder to avoid." The ganks are overused and lazy in this game. They are tolerable in the first few zones but the logner it runs on the more it becomes clear that it's the only string to the game's bow. What makes it most sad is that there is a lot of smart design ideas at play in the game, but they are utterly burrie duidner the bad ones. Befopre writing this I was playing through the Old Iron King DLC and thinking how the big smelter warrior enemies are incredibly clever. Their shoulders are full of lava and every mvoe some of it splashes out, alternating sides each time and emaning you have to dodge a different direction each time to avoid damage. Tehse enemies would have been so much fun but the first time you are introduced to them it's in a room full of smaller warrior enemies that all aggro to you at once. Sure the game provides little explosive barrel guys to help clear some of the trash, but I don't want the game to make me beat it with cheese, I want to fight those enemies, just not all at the same time in a small room with an archer and a fire bomber taking snipes.

I have never put down a sousl game before. I am the kind of person who whennever challanged says "Like ♥♥♥♥ that's beating me" and focuing all in until I beat it, but I put down Dark Souls 2. because the challange just wasn't fun. I could forgive the absolutly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ level design if the boss fights were good but they just don't do enough to save it. Bad hitboxes take fights that should be fun, Velstat, Lost Sinner, and Fume knight but make them just exhuasting with strange hitboxes that hit areas five times the size of some animations and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ run-ups.

The most crimial thign about it all is that Dark souls 2 has the absolute best PvP in the series. The problem is that every thing that makes the PvP good is what makes the PvE bad, and I just can't make that trade. You have to PvE to make your PvP build but you can play the whole game without PvPing. It just isn't a big enough part of the game to make this worth recomending.

I wish Steam had mroe than two options for rating. I wish there is a more neutral "mixed" option, because this game doesn't necissarily deserve a bad rating, but after my lastest playthrough I have to be honset with myself and say that it was the minority of my experience I enjoyed.

This isn't a bad game, but it is a bad souls game. It earns its position as the black sheep of the series. Stick to 1 and 3 unless you are really big into PvP.

There is a lot of contraversy about this remaster and it mostly seems to be down to failing to seperate these two Questions.

Is this a good remaster

Is this worth buying.

For my part, I think the answer to those questions is repectivly "no" and "yes."

It's nice to play without DSfix and to have a more active online community. If neither of those appeal to you then pass this one over, if it sounds good or you haven't played it before then grab it. That easy.

I actually really like this tribe, they have a good aesthetic, cool tribe ability and in general make a welcome addition to the game. I got the gold edition so I had no idea how much they were going to cost, came here to write a positive review and saw the price tag.

♥♥♥♥ that noise.

Fifteen dollars is highway robbery. Even if the free dlc they released at the same time was included under this price tag it would barely be worth a quarter the price of the full game.

Way to waste the good will you just earned announcing all tthe free content Monolith, I hope it was worth it.

The question here is, is it worth buying, and I would say that yes it is.

The real impact of dlc is memerable bosses and lasting content. Interesting or powerful weapons, new modes/content, memorable bosses. Let's mark them off:

This dlc has two fo the most creative paired weapons and a curved sword to unseat the carthus curved. Depending on your playstyle the new weapons may be worth ti by themselves. So many fun builds that can come up around them. Weapons: Check.

Arena mode that, while bare shows plenty of room for expansion and even as is provides a great alternative to summon dueling. While it may not appeal to pve players, pvp has been much less served in this game, it needs the boon. This type fo content would last longer than the longest dlc could have. New modes/contnet: Check.

Sister Frede is amazing. She may not be the hardest boss on regular new game, but she is a great addition, and easily one of the best in the series. Top fifteen at least. A great endurance test, with difficulty increasing as your estus dwindles. It blends three types of boss fights into one visually impressive encounter that would be a standout as part of the base game. I give a check.

A Buyers Guide to Whether or Not You Should Pickup Lichdom: Battlemage

Reasons To Buy:
-Steam Cards: it has em, we love em
-It could be on sale: Any game can be an appealing buy at a 70% off or higher, and discount prices are all anyone should be expected to pay for this
-Need a way to blow a few hours and remind you how good the other games you play are: I have never appreciated the quality of other games i play more than I have after this trial.

Reasons Not to Buy: *Deep Breath*
-If you believed the store page's claims: The selling point "the first game where the mage is truely badass" should come with a huge pulsating asterisk next to it. Lichdom's protagonist would be a a badass mage, in any other fantasy game, you know, ones where you have teammates. The game gives you a nice arsenal of defensive abilites, but again, they would all be better in a game where you acted as part fo a group, as a way of fending off a lone foe the tank has yet to take control of, as it stands, if more than one enemy tries to attack you and their swings arn't exactly synced up, wave bye bye to that chunk of health, because most spells don't stun enemies out fo thier attacks and are just sad when defending against anything other than one attacker.
-If you have an attention span: Dear god this game is repetative. You cast every spell with the same animations and even the more appealing looking spells get reduced to so manyy boreing lgihts once you have cast it for the 7,000th time. All the enimes are interchangeable, and all the levels are just hallways which are about as interesting to explore as the inside of a toilet paper tube.
-If you like playing a mage in fantasy games: For a game world that was designed with the sole intention of being played by a mage, i am baffled by just how poorly optomised it is for that. Every single boss fight leaves me longing for a tank to take the aggro and most of the enemies spread out so far that the AOE spells are useless. You are about as squishy as the mage in any other games, expect unlike other, games like skyrim, you can't aquire any followers to compensate for the feeling that the game hates you for picking the mage class. Against other projectile users it basically becomes any other cover based fps, if you gun had crappy fire rate and no headsot potential.
-If you like stories: people just talk at you every so often, it feels like every bit of interesting story is taking place without you, to the point i occasionally wonder why i am even still pressing forward. Even the inital cutscene that introduces the main chracter's motivation was so rushed and blut as to seem comical so don't expect much in the way of imersion.

Bottom Line: If you see this on sale consider picking it up for steam cards, if you are interested in that sort of thing, but if not just wait until one of the Elder scrolls games goes on sale instead and just download a bunch of magic combat mods. It will be about the same but with more content and a higher concentration of fun.
