I only recommend this game to people who want a mechanically fun combat oriented RPG that don't mind the substandard performance and lackluster story. Honestly no RPG has this kind of free flowing combat and it is what made the entire experience for me. Feel free to ask more specific questions in the comments to see if this game is worth it if you are on the fence.

The performance is not great, but I always had a steady 30-40 fps. If you have a below average machine, hold off on this game. I do feel like it was a sacrifice they were willing to make because they pulled something off I have not seen in a game of this size. THE GAME HAS NO LOADING SCREENS! Every town, cave, house you just walk right into. It's something rare, adds to the intended experience and I feel should it be celebrated.

The controversy over microtransactions is completely overblown as they are all gained rather easily through normal gameplay. It feels like the devs throwing off the higher ups saying, "Look we put it in the game!" with all of them being completely redundant 4 hours in. The backlash over the single file save system with no new game option is completely justified and a bigger detriment to the game than I think they realize.

If you loved the first game for its combat, this is an easy recommend. Combat is faster, every vocation feels powerful, and bosses don't take ages to take down without some item usage or broken skill usage. Enemy variation is about on par of the first game but they all are more engaging. The game is much easier because of the buff to healing items. If you reach zero health, you can just pause the game and eat some food to avoid a game over. I would recommend purposefully carrying a limited amount just to make fights more intense.

If you loved the first game for its story, there is not much to latch onto here (neither did the first game honestly but there was a lot of character to it). Most characters are flat and one note which makes most main quests where the whole mission is just talking to people horribly boring. The concept of the cycle of purpose and imprinting of greater wills is still amazing , but nothing is done with it. You make a couple choices, none that really matter since the ending just kinda happens. It felt like a story without a third act, no pay off for anything. It may well be that was intended, but to have all gameplay incentives pointing you in one direction that leaves you dissatisfied in both gameplay and story, then congratulations? You achieved the worst just like you planned?

A wonderful game with items that really impact your play-style that can lead to so many different feeling runs.
The difficulty of the game is a steep learning curve but it is done well as difficulty comes through increasing variety of enemies and traps.

There are two things that make me not recommend this game:

1. One of the three character types "Speed" is not possible to play well unless you are able to mash one button without tiring or hurting yourself. The game would benefit greatly by an option to hold button for continuous attacks.

2.Visual clarity is not this games strong suit. There is some amazing work done with the pixel art and particle effects. Too many effects. Once you stack up bonuses through items, enemies and especially bosses are incredibly hard to see. All or most of these effects should layered behind/around the enemies to allow the player to see incoming attacks and enemy projectiles. Another option would be a toggle to highlight enemy models.

If these two things do not bother you, this is an easy recommend for anyone that loves rouge-like elements, varied player builds, and button mashing action with some platforming elements.

The game is a great expansion on the previous title, Kingdom New Lands. Micro strategy is a good term for it, as there isn't a much decision making and interactivity, but it creates a relaxing loop of building up your kingdom for nightly defense and exploring islands. The visuals and music are outstanding.

The game has a fatal flaw for me though.

The fun in this game for me is expanding my kingdom across multiple islands, creating multiple safe and money making "cities" before heading to the next. The winter season slows your growth rate to such an extreme extent without adding additional threats that I decided to just leave it running for about an hour while I watched videos and wrote this review.
It would be fun if it was an extremely tense season where all other seasons are to be used to build yourself up to even survive for a short period of time, but its a boring slog of even less activity in this already limited game that I would rather afk until the fun seasons begin again than progress at a snails pace.

Vote kick abuse is strong with this one.
Normal for trolls to start a vote kick random people. Sometimes they switch teams to do so.
Everyone just votes yes for no reason. With such a small player base to begin with, you are basically time banned from the game since there are no other servers.
In other words, fun game, toxic community.

Overall recommended if on sale and you like beat-em ups.

The main campaign has 10 levels and is a fun 2 hours. The combat is a simple mix of parrying and dodging. Parries add to a combo meter that can be spent on supers. There are about 10 base enemies with their own different colored variations with their own attack pattern. There are 5 bosses and 3 of them aren't well designed. Their main gimmick is to parry attacks to build your super to be able to damage the boss; however, the game's combat is based around fighting one enemy at a time, rather than usual crowd control. Those boss battles throw that away and have multiple enemies attack you at once instead of taking turns, which you are not given any tools to deal with it. The other two bosses were fun, the final boss particularly so because they were just the boss.

The New Dawn game mode is an extra prologue campaign and it is very poorly designed. The first boss exemplifies how the game does not support engaging multiple enemies at once, but they keep doing it anyways. He actually pissed me off enough to write this review.

DO NOT BUY!
Was super fun, then it crashed. It crashed so hard, that it corrupted my hard drive to be useless. A 4 TB hard drive that I now have to see if I can salvage. I heard they fixed the major technical issues.
THEY HAVE NOT FIXED THE TECHNICAL ISSUES!

A short, bloody, quick to pick up and play action game with challenging levels, amusing retro-styled graphics, great music, not much replayability and confusing storyline if you think too much about it; a must buy if on sale. 7 out of 10.
