TL;DR VERSION:

It's a good game I highly recommend for the gameplay. Although the story is an absolute mess and barely even there.

LONG VERSION:

This is one of those games I feel very torn about. On one hand it's a fun game, specially once you unlock the really good stuff like different battle buddies, the more advanced weapons, weapon customizations, the ability to call in helicopter support etc and can replay missions with a new loadout and different strategies you didn't have avalible the first time around.

Yet even if you have read nothing about the Konami/Kojima falling out it's glaringly obvious that this game had a very problematic development. Very few of the missions actually contribute anything to the story and it feels like none of the new characters to the series (that is, Skullface, Code Talker and Quiet) really gets enough time to develop into proper characters.

I decided to split the various subjects into sections to make it easier to read.

SKULLFACE:

Remember when you saw Skullface for the first time in the "Ground Zeroes" trailer? How it felt like this could be THE biggest, baddest and most evil villain in the entire Metal Gear saga? How they made it look like him and Snake would clash time and time again throught the game and this would lead Big Boss to take more and more extreme measures in his quest get his revenge and this would eventually transform him into the villain we saw in the earlier Metal Gear titles?
Well, that didn't happen. In fact he is barely even in the game and ends up dying at the end of Mission 30 (out of 50.)
You can tell that even Konami realized that "♥♥♥♥ this isn't good" and desperatly tried to solve it by having him deliver a giant 11:20 minute long unskippable in-game info dump monologue on the player (just before he dies). Now in earlier games they would have at least had an cutscene that shows what Skullface is going on about but I guess they felt like they didn't have the time or money to waste on it so instead all we get is Skullface and Snake sitting in the back of an jeep, facing each other for 11 minutes and 20 seconds. Words can't even begin to describe how awkward it looks, specially since Snake is most likely armed to the teeth, may have just killed over a hundred men just to get a chance to kill Skullface but then he decides to just get into a jeep with him, listen to him ramble on for several minutes and say absolutely nothing.

Rest in peace, Skullface. You could have been great.

QUIET:

Let me get something out of the way right away. I love Quiet as a character. Out of all the new characters I feel like she is the most intresting out of them all and was probably the one they spent the most time on. However, I hate her outfit. I absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate it. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against a little fanservice here and there but when you let what is supposed to be a highly trained, proffesional soldier run around in a bikini and fistnet tights and have it as her main (as in canon) outfit I just can't help but to wonder what the ♥♥♥♥ they were thinking. The fact that Kojima made a pretty creepy remark that he designed her that way in hopes of having girls cosplay as her and... Yeah.. I just get a bad taste in my mouth. Then again you eventually unlock an alternative outfit for her where she wears regular BDUs so I guess that's something at least.

CODE TALKER:

I gotta be honest, I barely remember anything about this guy at all except that he essentially existed only to describe one of the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane "What the actual ♥♥♥♥ are you going on about?" plots I have ever heard in any game ever. I will not talk about it here because frankly I thought it was so ridiculous that I just stopped listening after a while. Then again, this is the game series where we got Cyber Ninjas, Inuits wielding gatling guns like it was nothing and pissed off Astronauts with flamethrowers so maybe I am a little to harsh on Ol' Talky here. Hey if nothing else the tapes where he and Kaz tries to make the perfect burger is pretty hillarious! :)

The XOF unit.:

Ah the XOF. The dark reflection of the FOX unit. A combat unit made up of the very best and the absolute worst the American Special Forces have to offer. Cold blooded killers that can gun down innocent civilians not only without hesitation but also enjoying it. Surely the clash between them and the Diamond Dogs will be a thing of legend, right? Well no. See after the prologue you run into them just once and they turn out to be essentially a palette swap of the Soviet soldiers you have fought throught most of the game.

BATTLE GEAR:

This was the one that really managed to piss me off. See early on Huey makes a big deal about how he will prove himself loyal to Big Boss by building a new Metal Gear called a "Battle Gear." Now after this you will get near constantly nagged on about how you should go down to the hangar and check in on his progress. So what's the big pay off? A new badass vechicle you can call in? A badass boss battle where you pilot the Battle Gear against Sahelanthropus? A really cool and well made cutscene that shows the Battle Gear in action?

I think you know the answer to that: Nope. You get to send it on two mandatory away missions and then it just sits there in the hangar. Why? Because while they were making the game they decided to cut it as a Battle Buddy/Vechicle. So the question remains, why the hell did they even keep it in the game at all?

SUMMARY:

As a game MGS V is good. But as a story it fails on so many levels. It tries to show Big Boss descent further and further into darkness but throught the entire game he or the Diamond Dogs never really ends up doing anything evil (for example, you know how in the trailers it looked like they trained child soldiers? Yeah it never happens. They end up launching an Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration operation for them instead. Oooooh! Evil ♥♥♥♥ right there!). So what we essentially end up with is an intresting premise followed by some half baked concepts, an mediocre delivery and half realised ideas. That's before we go into the fact that the ending itself (Mission 51) is missing from the game and must be seen on Youtube.

Phew, this turned into something way longer than I expected it to be. Anyway, if you made it this far then I thank you for reading my ramblings. Cheers!

It's a good game, too bad the community is about as toxic as the League of Legends community.

So would I recommend this game? Sure! The community? No way in hell.

The only reason I haven't asked for a refund is because I simply forgot to do it within 14 days.

I know that this isn't exactly the most through review ever but all I felt after playing this game was disapointment, regret and disgust. When the vast majority of your game time is spent in a lobby filled with screaming russians and having only about fifteen minutes of actual game time you know something isn't right.

Although I did learn two things from this game. Apparently you can kill someone by throwing them out an wide open ground floor window and firearms are one-use only!

Alright my last review got lost so here is a tl;dr version:

Is this game good? Yes.

Is this game awesome? YES.

Is this one of my top three all time favorite games of all time? Hell yeah (my total playtime is closer to 100 hours with the original version)

Did I buy this version of the game to support Undead Labs (a game developer that actually cares about their product, their fanbase and actively communicates with their community. Basically everything certain other developers that shall not be namned doesn't do)? YES.

Should you buy this game? Yeah I actually think you should. It's a pretty gods damned good game.

P.S Oh yeah, if you are a returning player you should buy this game too if you can afford it. I think you would enjoy the changes they have made.

I have played few games that are as stressful, tense and just plain fun as this game!

If you like horror games then you really should buy this game!

Tl;dr version of what is going on:
Gaslamp Games is gone and won't be able to continue the development but the community has come togheter and is working on completing the game with projects like the CECOMMPATCH (which is at the time of this writting currently at version 0.9.5) which can be found at the "CE Community Patch" steam group and the official Clockwork Empires forums. Now the community would really love to get their hands on the in-game engine access which would make their job a hell of a lot easier (since it would reduce the risk of legal problems) so if anyone on the team reads this then please get in touch with the CECOMMPATCH team.

As for the review:

It's obvious that the game isn't finished, but it's still a hell of a lot of fun!

NOTE: Before I say anything else let me just say this right now, this is an online only game. This means that even if you never intend to use the multiplayer aspects of this game you still need to connect to Ubisofts central server in order to play and when (not if) the day comes that Ubisoft decides that they don't make enough money from the game they will pull the plug and you will NEVER be able to play this game again. Keep this in mind before you buy this game.

So, what do I think after having played this for eight hours during the course of the free weekend?

The Division is a good game, it's not a perfect game but a good game none the less that is well worth a try if you ever get the chance. The setting is immersive, the gameplay is fun and the visuals are more often than not stunning.

Addendum: Everyones microphone is automaticly set to "always on" in the settings at the start of the game. For the love of everything that's holy turn off the in-game voice chat and change to "push-to-talk" before you join a group of other players for all our sakes.

An excellent noir game with a really good story. While I think that the art style and the gameplay will not suit everyone I still think that this game is worth checking out.

Addendum: 1/7/2021

So five years later and with no sequel in sight I feel like I have to say something. The Detail is really one of those games where you feel "This could've and should've been the next big thing." The story is dark, gritty and grounded. All the characters, even the minor ones, have depth to them and feel like they could be actual people instead of just being one-dimensional cardboard cutouts there to do one thing and one thing only (heck, it just hit me that this game is better at making characters feel believable than the Hollywood of today…) and like I said before: The art style is probably not everyone’s cup of tea but it I personally loved it because it felt distinct and made me think of the detective comics I read growing up.

In short, I love this game and it’s a damn shame we never got to see a sequel to it. Maybe one day, if we are lucky, we will get one but until then we are left with an awesome game with a really great story that will suck you in and not let you go until the credits have finished rolling.

This has been Reinbach, good night everybody.
