I tried this game out during the free weekend and this is one of those cases I wish you could put a "Maybe" on wheter or not you recommend a game. Because there's some genuinely good stuff to be found here: The setting is perfect, the sound design is terrific and the enemies are genuinely unsettling.

That said, me and my friends tried for over two hours to just get past the first level. We played it smart, avoided as many enemies as possible and only engaged them when we had[b/] to (due to alarms the game forces you to trigger). Yet on the first level, on the easiest difficulty, we died over and over again at the same stupid locked door because the game forces[b/] you to stand in very specific spots in a tiny room while enemies are actively swarming you otherwise the progress on getting the door unlocked won't continue.

This, to me, is absolutely inexcusable. Because this is a game where you have to play it smart and think tactically because you have very limited resources and just a couple of hits from even the weakest enemies are enough to kill you.

I really wanted to love this game, but in the end none of my friends decided to get it.

In my humble opinion, this is THE best Far Cry game! It's fun, got a cast of memorable characters that all feels like actual people (from minor characters to main ones) and it manages to deliver some absolutely heartwrenching moments. Do yourself a favour, get this game and play it with a friend. You won't regret it!

One of my closest friends have been on this insane Ace Combat binge for a while now, ever since he played Project Wingman. Now I never really understood what the big deal was, I mean it's just a dog fighting game and those have been around since forever right?

For Christmas he, among other things, got me this game and I promised to play it but I kept putting it off. Well, I finally got around to it and my reaction can best be summarised as the meme of Danny DeVito saying "Oh my god... I get it now!"

This game is not only great, it's also fun! Fun in a way I don't think a game has managed to be in a long, long time. Yes the characters and the story is cheesy, but it adds to the game rather than take away from it and becomes a part of it's charm.

Give it a try, I promise you won't regret it!

I don't know why this game got so much bad press at release, it's amazing! Everything from the presentation, to the action to the... Well... Everything! Is just so much fun! 10/10, easily!

Need to know:

A short but sweet little game made by one devoted developer. Charles feels like a genuinely threatening presence and the fact that he can appear anywhere at any time makes it so that you never quite feel safe. Luckily you got your locomotive that you will slowly but surely turn into an absolutely awesome high speed death machine on your side!
That said it *is* very short so I would still recommend you get it on sale, I got it for 9,75€ and I feel that the game was very well worth the price! :)

Other things worth bringing up:

That said, there's no way to get around it. The game IS very short. Right now, at 2.8 hours in, I have done EVERYTHING in the game except collecting all the pain cans, one side mission (Cloud Climber, it was just too much of a hassle to get to. Especially since my locomotive was already fully upgraded!) and defeating Charles in the new Nightmare Mode that just dropped. Now this is not a game breaker for me personally by any means, but it’s worth bringing up.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the missions in the game are usually very simple. Go here, get this for me, PRAY TO GOD THAT CHARLES DOESN’T SHOW UP, return to the quest giver. Sure there’s some missions that change things up a notch but for the most part it does end up feeling like you’re just doing a regular milk run. *That said,* the missions that do change it up is a lot of fun and deserves a mention: Swamp Swimmer has you *slowly* inch your way across a lake inhabited by a monster you can only locate by its bubbles and the wake it creates as it moves around. Do note that Charles can STILL show up while you do this and he can swim! It was actually very intense! Boulder Field Pages is a love letter to the game Slender: The Eight Pages and was a lot of fun with some genuinely scary moments at times! Mob Camp Infiltration may sound like a sneaking mission, but there’s NOTHING stopping you from simply driving into the camp with your monster killing death machine and moving down the mobsters with machine gun fire! Felt extremely cathartic! Also Cloud Climber, the one mission I didn’t do, is apparently a parkour mission that has you jumping from platform to platform. I never did it, sadly enough, but it sounds fun!

The final part worth mentioning is more of an oversight than anything else. You see once you place a waypoint in the game you cannot remove it. You can move it but it will never go away until you go into the save files and remove it there. I had to do this myself and it works with no ill effects, however it took me out of the moment and made me grumble a little. If you ever have to do it, the guide I used was the one from DigiStatement. I’m sure that the other guides will also work but that’s the only one I can personally vouch for.

Final Verdict:

8/10! VERY GOOD! It’s my understanding that the developer is actively working on updating the game. If he does end up making each mission feel more special and fixes the waypoint bug I could actually see myself giving the game a 10/10. Especially if he gives us the option to customize the locomotive some more. To really make it feel more like our own, you know? It wouldn’t have to be any practical upgrades either, maybe a music player, some posters or just silly little things like that. However, until then my score will remain a 8/10 which is still very good! :)

Peace!
