And here we can see the Orange Ethiopian Penguin - or Aptenodytes florus simensis - in his natural habitat. This penguin is extraordinarily robust and wily; characteristics much needed to survive in the harsh environments ranging from Sudanese deserts to Ethiopian mountains which the bird calls his home.
In order to defend himself from predators the Ethiopian Penguin doesn't rely on physical strength or camouflage but is known to build sophisticated traps. There are even many tales of Mahdist dervishes falling for these traps in the 19th century; it is told that the Mahdist warriors feared nothing but the sly orange birds with their terrifying warcry. This story appears to be believable when we see how the penguin catches an unsuspecting wolf right now. However other more gruesome stories of victims stuck in the bird's traps being eaten alive must be reckoned among fairytales.
It looks like the penguin is heading towards the nearby watering hole now; perhaps to catch a fish? Let us swiftly follow him and...WHAT? I...OUCH!...
The floor beneath us just gave in, looks like we fell for one of his traps. Oh well, being a wildlife documentarian isn't always easy.
Nigel, would you be so kind as to help me out, please? Just lift me up and then I help you from above, yes, just like this, I...wait a minute. My foot is stuck somewhere, it...it's a net. How is that even...birds can't tie nets, can they? Whatever, just let me...What? There....There's something on the net, now my hand is stuck as well. I can't seem to...Oh look the bird is back, probably watching what he caught. We're no fish birdie, we're...OH GOD! Did you hear this cry? No wonder the dervishes were scared of this bird, it just. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! Did you see its eyes? DID you SEE its EYES?...Calm down Arthur, it's just a bird. Just a ...WHAT IN, Nigel are you all right? Nigel! Speak to me! Nigel, I, WHAT? NOOO! GET OFF MY...BLOODY PENGUIN, I...AAAAAAAAAAGH!
