Brutal Orchestra is a highly replayable roguelite with an extremely unique take on turn based battles that perfectly combines a gloomy atmosphere with darkly comedic dialogue.

The game starts off by throwing the player character, Nowak, into a gloomy and depressing purgatory aided only by his companion Bosch, and whatever fools he meets along the way. Nowak and his companions battle through the levels of purgatory fighting (mostly) grotesque monsters and villains, with short reprieves of companionship along the journey.

The turn based pigment battle system introduces an alternative to traditional “energy” or “mana” systems, and promotes lots of strategy in a genre that usually devolves into just using your highest damage attack every round. Simple to understand, yet difficult to master, it makes every battle interesting, and requires you to get creative with your set up.

The game tackles heavy topics of life and death, yet fills every character with quirky humor and unique style, while maintaining the doom and gloom of a purgatorial hellscape. The game is obviously stylized after the works of Hieronymus Bosch, particularly his “Garden of Earthly Delights.”

In essence, Brutal Orchestra is a love letter to the renaissance era, an exposition on life and death, and a lovingly crafted turn based roguelite that will leave you wanting more.

With a low price tag and an indie team this criminally underrated game sits just outside the spotlight, but deserves all the love and attention and more it’s earned nonetheless.

I’m not certain if there are actually vampires in the game but it is very enjoyable nonetheless.
