Want a horror game that isn't just a hallway with jump scares? Want a gun to fight back, but still feel helpless to the overwhelming fear of the world around you? Ever wondered how an open world horror rpg would work?

Give this game a try then. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: call of Pripyat stands up over the years as a great open world fps rpg set in the zone surrounding the Chernobyl power plant. It is incredibly atmospheric and engaging to keep you exploring the world full of horrifying and unnerving sights. An interesting feature this game (and clear sky) contains are emmissions that explode from the power plant every now and then. These answer the question of how you can feel uneasy in an open world horror game, as getting caught in the wilds far from any shelter can be fatal. Radiation also affects your playstyle, forcing you to not linger in certain areas for too long, or making you prioritize gear that increases your radiation resistance over other stats. It has an ending similar to the Fallout games, where every side quest you complete or fail adds to the epilogue of the world.

You will not need to have played the previous S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games to jump into this, as a recap will play at the start of a new game, and only Strelok's story (from Shadow of Chernobyl) carries over.

If you want a more difficult experience, look up the Misery mod for the game, which will give a hardcore mode to players.
