I recommend this game. I recommend it, but not without reservations. It's a pretty good game -overall-, but the feel of the game is definitely not consistent throughout it's entirety.

As a lover of the old Resident Evils, I was very pleasantly surprised with the beginning of the game. I've told friends things like "It feels like the old RE games just with a first person perspective" after my initial hours of play. The beginning has lots of tension, creepy atmosphere, and does a great job of keeping you on your toes when opening doors and going around corners. It really feels like a great survival horror game.

However, that feeling doesn't last after the mid-way ish point of the game. After you reach that point, it starts feeling less like RE 1-3 and more like RE 4-6. It simply stops being scary and becomes actiony. That being said, it didn't really have any of the ridiculous over-the-top sequences like Chris punching a boulder into lava in RE5, but it does lose a lot of the tension and creepy atmosphere that the beginning hours of the game brought with it.

My personal rating:

1st half: 9/10. Great survival horror. Tension, atmosphere, and pacing are fairly well done.
2nd half: 7/10. Average action based gameplay. Feels like it could've been better and a bit less drawn out.
Average those out to an 8/10. Worth at least an initial playthrough and maybe more depending on your tastes / experience.
