Believe it or not, I'm a huge fan of The Spoony Experiment. And yes, I have seen his reviews of FFVIII all the way through XIII. And I like them! They're hilarious, and just about every problem he points out with these games has basis. Hell, most of the time, I think he's right. But you know what? I still have fun with Final Fantasy eight, ten, and even X-2. why? Well, it's kind of hard to describe.

I like Final Fantasy the same way I like the 4Kids dub of Yu-Gi-Oh. Yes, it's nostalgic and that's part of it, but more than the botched dub, more than the aggregious Americanizations, I can still see the heart underneath. The heart of the ones who made it with love and care.

As for FFX, it's kind of the same way. The dub is awful (sorry James Arnold Taylor, I loved you as Ratchet and you really didn't have much to work with here, but Tidus really does come across as whiney and shrill,) the plotline ludicrous at points, and there are far better games with deeper stories and just as much if not more fun to be had. Why do I still recommend this game? Because it's got the same sort of feeling as the first Kingdom Hearts, a real loving energy underneath everything that tells you the ones who made it really wanted to give life to this world. I also love post-apocalyptic fantasy settings and I hardly ever see them done at such length.

So be warned, FFX is an acquired taste, and some who drink will get violently ill and spit it out almost at once. But, if you can enjoy the campy goodness of a game of Shonen: Final Burst, still watch Sailor Moon or Inu Yasha, and remember fondly the days of the Playstation 2, then you'll have a great time with this game.
