This game is a masterpiece.

That's pretty much my review, short version.

The developers had a clear idea of what they want to create and managed 100% to do so - a top-down view game that will slowly stress the crap out of you.

The graphics seem just simple and pixelated, yet are carefully polished and detailed and the animation is smooth. The sound is great - from the rustle of the trees and random creaks under your feet to weapon sounds and enemies noises (that freaking chomper growl..), it's raw, clear and amplifies the game's feel perfectly.

Darkwood plays really well and gets you sucked in for good in no time. Combat system is simple, still you will have to practice every new weapon, as well as study the behaviour of the enemies - some charge, some get smart and sneaky. It feels rewarding to find and craft stuff or add an upgrade to a weapon and does make you want to check every single part of the map. Resources are limited, just enough to make you consider wether to play safe and use those bandages now, or risk taking two more hits to get full value.

The horror aspect - out of this world. No jumpscares or sudden loud noises, no cheap bulls**t. Instead, an overwhelming atmosphere of solitude and constant danger. Even exploring the forest during daytime keeps you in constant suspense.
But the real fun starts when the sun goes down. Seriously, the night in Darkwood is one of the most terrifying and nerve-wracking things I have experienced. Not gonna spoil anything, all sorts of creepy, crazy and potentially dangerous stuff can happen. You will have to hide, you will have to run, you will have to fight. And you will let a sigh of relief once the night is finally over.

There's a bonus for you if you happen to be Polish, cause some items you find will put a slight nostalgic smile on your face.

Challenging and unforgiving, as the loading screen tells you, Darkwood is one hell of a gaming experience. If you enjoy video games, you simply will appreciate this title. Recommending it as hard as I can, life feels more complete than before playing it.
