The game's optimization is woeful and CTD errors are reintroduced with every update, new weapons are added or existing ones are edited without any testing, new enemies are introduced that are broken and compound frustrating gameplay elements, and there's a list of "known bugs" that's tacked onto every update blog that haven't been fixed since launch.

At this point I'm convinced the developer don't actually know how to code in the engine that they use. It's a blob of third-party templates and plugins they've jerry-rigged together with snot and duct tape, so all they can do is edit a value here and there while major bugfixes and optimization is beyond them. Would explain some of the changes I've seen come and go.

"Inept" doesn't begin to describe these developers. "Incompetent" doesn't do them justice. Their ancestors were invented by the wheel, discovered by fire and tamed by wolves.

The game's come a long way in a short period of time. Seems far more stable now and joining lobbies is a lot easier. Now it's so good we even had to complete a major order IRL, would recommend.

Oh, you managed to join a game? How about you now join this crash to desktop loser. Silver lining is that the game boots up fast. Needs some stability patches ASAP though. There's nuclear power plants in Ukraine more stable than this game.

I like a lot about this game, despite not being a fan of sandboxy sims with no concrete ending. I'll probably keep playing it for a while yet, or maybe not. Almost everything in the game, including my enjoyment, hinges on its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ random number generator.

Most of the RNG is fine. Randomizing things like the strategic map, settlements, characters' stats, obstacles on the battle map, injuries incurred in combat - ok. The part that I absolutely loathe is that RNG is also applied to hit chance in combat. Your characters have a % chance to completely miss and do zero damage. Doesn't sound too bad on paper, but in a high-lethality TBS where your guys get an average of 1-2 hits per turn it can lead to some absolutely game changing rolls.

The event that led to me rage quitting and writing this review was 3 of my guys swinging away at 1 skeleton hanging on by a couple hp. 80-95% chance to hit. They all miss for two turns in a row, in which it ends up axing two of them to death.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ go commit sewer side (in Minecraft).

If it weren't for this garbage mechanic I'd probably enjoy the combat layer a whole lot more. There's so much potential for tactics already - all sorts of weapons with different attack moves and attributes, armor, obstacles, elevation, morale, action points and fatigue to take into account. Now forget about all that because RNG decided your best fighter is just gonna whiff all his hits. There's never anything surefire about whatever move you make because you never know if RNJesus is with you in that moment or not.

Don't tell me it's more realistic or whatever, I'm playing a game to unwind not to watch myself lose through no bad decisions of my own. Might as well make a random event where an asteroid falls on your party and ends the game cause luck just wasn't with ya son.

Anyway, if you like rolling dice you probably won't mind that aspect of the game. I find it rage inducing.

- Get to a "safe" temple
- Start faffing around with the wands
- Suddenly get told I have angered the gods
- See a giant angry skeleton with a forcefield in the next room
- Also notice a giant hole in the temple floor that wasn't there before
- Watch three huge spider things crawl in through the hole
- Scream like I'm in labor and blast them ineffectually with my wand
- Skeleton god sees spiders and climbs down into the hole to kill them
- I book it past the hole and out the other end of the temple

Lesson learned: nowhere is safe, and even gods admit that spiders were a mistake. 11/10 would anger gods again.

Full disclaimer, the original review was a thumbs down. You can read the entire thing below just for the record.

I looked back at the review and thought it wasn't fair to say I don't recommend the game. My problems were on the technical side, not gameplay. For some reason one of the updates broke the game and made it run like garbage for me, however, as far as I can tell, I was in a small minority and for most people the game runs just fine. Fatshark couldn't find a fix, so they asked Steam to refund the game for me.

If you buy it and happen to be unlucky enough to experience performance issues like I did, I suppose you can just return it immediately, problem solved. Otherwise, have fun! It's Left4Dead set in Warhammer Fantasy and I did enjoy it while it lasted. Sad we had to break up this way. lol.

====================== Original review:

It's with kind of a heavy heart that I'm giving this game a thumbs down, because my issues with it are purely technical. In Fatshark's defense, they offered to contact Steam to refund my VT2 after being unable to find a solution to my problems. I guess the blind optimist in me is still holding onto the game hoping there'll be a fix with every new patch.

After one of the patches following v2.0, the game simply became unplayable due to extremely poor performance: low fps and stuttering gfx/sfx even when sitting in the menu or viewing the intro cutscenes, let alone during gameplay. Lots of crashes if I do try to play. Other people have reported similar issues. It's highly annoying for this to happen after having played for hundreds of hours already.

Searching online revealed people having these exact symptoms... months ago. Then the other day I found a reddit post in which Fatshark apparently admit that they had 2 versions of the game - the live one with all the bug and performance fixes, and an internal one being used to develop WoM without said fixes. Is this an old issue that's been reintroduced due to forked development? That just makes it all the more exasperating.

tl;dr game was fun until it stopped working for no reason

I got this game during the latest sale. Reviews far and wide said the game's fairly slow paced with an emphasis on logistics, and oddly enough that sounded right up my alley. I guess I'm one of those guys who's most comfortable playing support in games and doesn't like to clutch hectic situations. So, I had high hopes going in.

About ~2hr in I was bored to tears because there just wasn't much going on and not much I could do in the meantime. I guess after the latest update the play area has been expanded into a massive interconnected world map, so the player base is spread pretty thin to begin with. I did manage to find a skirmish after a while, but just one death later I was down to using a pistol because there was no more ammo for any of the other weapons.

No problem, I thought, this is where the logistics part comes in. I will take up that mantle and make sure my team is well supplied! A couple youtube videos later I figured out how to collect raw resources and turn them into building material. To turn that into ammo you need to build a factory, which requires even more material. To gather materials faster you can use a truck. To build a truck you need to build a vehicle factory. Screw it, I thought, I'll just gather it by hand, the resource node isn't THAT far away.

Well, turns out the resource node can be depleted, and apparently it can take OVER AN HOUR for it to regenerate. It's my understanding that this was a deliberate addition in the latest update to cause resource shortages. To slow things down even further, I guess.

This game does a good job of making war realistic. Not everything in war is quick and exciting combat, there's also the tedious, boring and mundane parts. They really captured the boring.
