I've found you do better in automated battles when you have multiple armies. I have 3 with the vampires and I'm barely losing men against single large armies or cities

Auto resolve pretty much all of them. The combat is a bit useless. I think I'd make it worse

Do you auto resolve combat or do every battle?

Income seems to be hardest for me but when you raid like a boss it fills out okay. It is really hard to balance the armies vs upkeep
