In Ardency: Heart of the Rebellion you play as one of the esteemed Royal Rangers, protectors of the kingdom of Allton. Fight, find love and forge friendships along the way.

The Story

You are a Royal Ranger. A protector of the Realm of Allton. Tensions are on the rise with the neighbouring Elven realm of Kedarn.

You can have four romances in this game. Artie, the crowned prince who is honourable and brave. Kasanov, the very flirty captured elf. Claudin, your life-long best friend and belonging to the Mazakoi race. And Moira, who is steadfast and intelligent.

⭐ You will be notified at a certain point near the start of the story where once you make the next choice it will begin one of four paths you travel down. Save at this point before you decide who to partner up with. From this point on a reminder will pop up letting you know you have five days till the elf captive meets his end.

The game has some flirty banter and implied sexual content through text but nothing graphic, lewd or really spicy.

Gameplay & Features

The settings in this game include your usual fare; audio options, rollback options, save files, credits and a gallery you can unlock as you play different routes. You can hide the hud for screen captures and there is some very nice art in this game if you love to take screenshots.

Each love interest has missions within their routes. Like most visual novels in the genre you have certain points within each route where your choices influence the plot and determine either a good or bad ending in that route. Alternate outcomes are achievable that are not tied to a romance.

The Visuals & Audio

The music really adds to the atmosphere. Melodies that invoke adventure, mystery and fantasy and ambient noises are well done as well. Sounds of running footsteps, wildlife or a twig snapping.

There is partial voice acting. Now I always find if you enjoy voice acting in a visual novel or not to be personal. I personally prefer to play a novel making my own voices for characters unless the story is told in a language other than English (for immersion).

The voice acting in this novel is for me personally not the greatest, however if you wish to turn off the voice acting it is an option. I am happy when full lines of dialogue are voice acted but am not a fan of grunts and sighs thrown in here and there. This visual novel tends to have quite a bit of the latter.

Visually I love this game. The sprites, the key art (cg art) and the backgrounds all work well together. The characters are static for the most part with facial animations to portray emotion.

My Overall Thoughts

Depending on the route you take the narrative can either be more fleshed out and cohesive or feel jumbled and illogical. I admit I played the Kasanov route first (as I adore elves). However his route, in terms of how the narrative flowed, felt the most disjointed. Claudin’s, Artie’s and Moira’s routes were much more fleshed out and fluid. Also each route had different paths leading up the finale with events that were unique to each route.

Overall I wish there was a stronger narrative across all the routes but there is some great artwork and handsome (and beautiful) romance options with a colourful and interesting cast of characters.💗
