This is not a bad game in itself.
Hell, I enjoyed quite a few parts of it...
But I simply cannot wholeheartedly recommend it.

The Good:
1. The graphics are amazing! Even with my old Nvidia GTX 770 I was able to play at max graphics on 1080p.
Maybe it's because the world is usually shrouded in mist, so the graphical engine doesn't need to render large sections of the world at a time, but the graphics look crisp and beautiful.
2. The suspense building is amazing. I genuinely felt goosebumps crawl all over me quite a few times during the game. The sound effects, the game events that appear before you (especially in the flashback scenes) really do their job well.
3. Almost no jump scares during the entire game (maybe 2-3).

The Bad:
1. Even though the graphics in the lit area are amazing, 95% of the game happens in the dark/shadows, and you either don't see anything, or see it via night vision which simply makes it look like crap.
So the devs built an amazing looking and beautiful game environment, and then put a visual filter over it that makes it look like crap.
So in the 5% of the game that was lit, I really enjoyed the graphics.
The other 95%, were pure torture.
2. There is no story whatsoever #1
The game basically has 3 objectives to do. Very very generic objectives. Most of the time you have no idea how what you're doing right now actually relates to your supposed current objective.
Like how exactly taking XXX and using it to YYY is supposed to help me get to ZZZ ?!
3. There is no story whatsoever #2
There is no backstory. There are a bunch of letters, journals and video entries. But they're mostly ramblings by crazy people, which do not explain anything, and do not further the plot in any way.
The only use for them (as far as I can tell) is to be collectibles for Steam achievements.
4. Half the game you have no idea what's going on around you.
You're either falling, or stumbling in the darkness, or climbing in the darkness, or seeing the world askew. And (in addition to not understanding the plot) have no idea what's actually happening around you, or where you are. Or where you're going. Or if it's the right way.
I've tried to use walkthroughs to understand what to do next.
They are of no use.
They too cannot find a way to explain what you need to do or where to go. The best they have to offer most of the time is: "push forward". As the game has no discernable markers to help them explain to you where you actually need to go.
5. As I mentioned, the suspense is done well. But then they go and spoil it all by doing something stupid, like not letting it end when it should, and instead letting whole sections be filled with suspenseful music and chases. It's desensitizing. You can't be scared for hours on end.
Take the Lara Croft reboot for example. You have a stressful moment, a bear attacks... the bad guys chase you... a plane falls down on you... so you have a suspenseful 5-10 minute sequence, and then the action dies down. That's how adrenaline bursts in our bodies work. We get a small burst, and have an adrenaline high. That's why we play computer games.
This game, instead makes whole 30-60 minute sequences of suspenseful music & action. This is not scary. You either become stressed, or at some point become desensitized and not care.
6. The entire game is a huge save scum simulator. You literally die all the time.
It's not Resident Evil where you can actually fight back against the monsters.
Or a walking simulator where suspense is gradually built throughout the game.
♥♥♥♥ will try (and succeed) to kill you all the time, and there's nothing you can do about it except reload from last checkpoint and try again.

The Ugly:
Did I mention how horrible the beautiful game world looks like, when viewed through the "night vision" filter?

In conclusion: Definitely not a game for everyone.

Ok, I don't want to say it's bad game per se...
Just by the number of reviews and the score of the game it might appear that this game is well liked by a broad audience of gamers, and appeals to a wide array of gamers.
It is not.
I personally did not like the game at all.
I prefer games that build suspense, and this game builds stress.
The "scary" parts were either disgusting parts (like body parts, blood, mutilation, etc.) or simple jump scares. And the music is perpetually suspensful. This is not how a human body works. We can't be in suspense permanently - we get andrenaline rush from small bursts of suspense.
Permanent suspense either makes us indifferent to it, or stressed. Both are not fun.

So if you liked "five nights at freddy's", you'll probably like this.
But if you're more of an Alien:Isolation kind of guy, probably skip this one.
(Outlast 2 is much better btw...)

It's simply a disgusting game.
The main character actions are disgusting.
The plot is disgusting.
And frankly, the game looks disgusting.

Bad game from a worse developer.

I got it for free, and I still want my money back !!!

Amazingly looking game!
I have a 2 year old mid-range graphics card, and this game still looks totally amazing!
