This is my favourite game, for the 10th anniversary i'll tell you why!

REASONS TO PLAY

Progression is Terraria's best feature, which fits (mostly) into these categories.

CUSTOMIZATION

At full power there is nothing in the world you can't destroy, and in turn you can put it back together in basically any shape with only a handful of naturally generated pieces you can't collect. Building bases is always fun, but the imagination here can be pushed VERY far.

You can dig a hole to the bottom of the world, build your own biome in there, for the house you build on top of it, out of anything you have collected, then paint each individual block, wall or piece of furniture in 31 different colours.

Not just the world itself either, you, or whoever you play as are equally or more customizable. I think some people overlook this since it's a small 2d sprite, but you can make some absolutely absurd looking characters. Character Creation starts simple, a few outfits, a colour wheel, a couple dozen hairstyles, a name, most games would stop there as your character vanishes forever under their armour, not this one

3 slots for armour and 5-7 for accessories which can change your appearance, all of which have vanity slots, which let you keep your stats and effects while wearing anything else on top. Each slot can also be seperately dyed in 119 colours, as well as your pet, light pet, minecart, mount and hook.

How do you have that many options?

COLLECTION

Being a decade old has advantages, we started with 234 items, now it's 5000 and... Oh, how outdated my vault of every item now is, yes trying to list it all is almost a lost cause but here's the basics.

Tools to mine the world, weapons to fight the inhabitants, armour and accessories to wear, blocks and walls to build your houses, furniture and crafting stations to fill them with, ores and coins and gems and bars to collect or trade, paints and dyes to lead to fashion demise, wires and mechanisms and monster spawning statues to spend time, pets and mounts and minions causing me to rhyme? My favourite are the potions, walk on water, get high, farm Deathweed, fall in a hole, go fishing (order may vary).

Yes it's only a matter of time before you soil all your pretty structures with more chests than you know what to do with, the good ol times of "i'll sort them later" after 13 more trips into the unexplored unknown, quick stacking never made it so easy to be lazy I mean EFFICIENT. Before doing it all over again in another randomly generated world, swearing that this time will be different, maybe you should try fill out the Bestiary instead?

Oh right! Speaking of, you can also collect people! No, it's not as bad as it sounds, okay maybe it's a little bad as it sounds if you find someone you don't like but basically if your house meets some standards someone decided, 1 of 26 mooches I mean friends will automatically decide to live there, they're all helpful in some aspect but won't pay rent until you defeat Paul Blart, Wall Cop (true story).

Who's gonna stop you from hoarding?

CHALLENGE

There's plenty to do to stay entertained, but despite being a sandbox there is actually a goal in the sense that it will lead you to a nice end credits sequence, who are we gonna start a riot with?

300+ enemies across a couple dozen biomes, with a few world events sprinkled in, all of which have unique treasures the others don't, the store page told you that already "Dig, Fight, Explore, Build!" but the main course is the bosses of which there are 17.

Not everything is required to progress, but doing X will give you more Y so you can Z easier, that's the game most of the time. When you defeat certain milestone bosses the world you're playing in will change, for better or worse? That part's not important i'm sure, the point is it will bring more challenges and as a result more powerful loot for you to destroy the world to obtain!

The game is as hard as you want it to be, the main difficulty settings are Classic/Expert/Master for the world you play on (with more loot the higher you go), then three more for the character you play as (99% play softcore don't worry about it), while the Journey settings are more equivalent to a collecting creative mode (seperated from other options). For my fellow masochists wanting to go the opposite direction, look up the "FOR THE WORTHY" seed.

Not to mention there's four classes, so you can either do it multiple times yourself or multiply yourself into convincing friends to play with you. Bosses scale accordingly and drop seperate loot for each player in Expert and up, but don't worry i'm sure you can find something to argue over or blow up your homies house, this counts as challenge right? Moving on!

Does it ever stop?

CMODS

Short answer, nope. If you had any hope left for saving your free time, you can run for the hills now as I tell you this is one of those games with a thriving modding community that you will probably spend as much time assembling a list of as playing, the horror, THE HORROR!

For the simplest time, tModLoader is already on Steam for free, because of course it is, there's nothing they won't do for this game apparently. There's also the Steam Workshop for maps and texture packs and the like, or OTHER PLACES only the nutters like me go to, look it up.

You should probably complete the base game at least once, but if you're hooked you're probably already in the modding vortex anyway, personal recommendation? Calamity, Good L_ck.

That's all well and good, is there anything bad? Well apart from the moditis of course.

REASONS NOT TO PLAY?

I'm obviously very bias, but there really aren't any, besides BIAS itself.

Terraria is a 2d, sandbox survival with pixel graphics and crafting, if you don't like any of those, it is among the best of them but may not change your mind.

The lore is mostly left up to interpretation so you won't get much of a story here either unless you want to make it yourself, this was very intentional as it's basically imagination the game, the Bestiary and NPCs have some snippets and the devs occasionally say silly things are true for a laugh. Personally I like the player being the villain and destroying the world to gain more power version the best.

Perhaps the biggest reason is lack of direction, that was also intentional as it is a sandbox, but if you'd rather the game clearly tell you what to do or how things work instead of figuring them out yourself, this is probably a game you will open the wiki for. The Guide will help you with crafting recipes and the Bestiary will give you enemy and item drop information as you fill it out, but some things like unlocking Hard Mode may halt a completely new player, so beware of that if you're not the try every combination of things or failing is fun type.

TIPS & DIPS

It's pronounced "Te-rare-ee-uh" (like Terrarium) ...or "Te-rarr-ee-uh" (if you're a Biscuit or a Couch).

Despite his reputation the Guide is the best NPC, treat him well before you kill him (who said that?).

Go right in when you get to the dungeon, the Old Man insists you shouldn't but doesn't actually stop you!

THANK YOU

Re-Logic, for making this game, and reader, for skipping to the end!

I'm not a reviewer and will totally remember something I forgot to mention BUTT i've had a lot of fun playing Terraria, maybe you will too if you haven't already.

I have played so much of this game that the Steam Calculator says my Price/Hour ratio is 0.00, it was always worth the money since day 1.

Even though we're on the FINAL UPDATE (give or take 1-3 previous "final" updates) I imagine i'll still be playing it for another 10 years.

TLDR

"I've made a lot of enemies within Terraria, you say you're legendary? I'M LEGENDARIER!!!"
