The mechanics are pretty simple - fix the generators to open the door and get away from the killer. By itself, pretty bland. The game also has a learning curve so steep it's practically 90 degrees.

BUT! What really makes this game shine is how you and your friends deal with the killer, and how the killer deals with you. There's a real person behind every other character (with the possible rare exception of some survivor bots) so everyone's reaction to every thing in the game is that of a real person. Don't like playing survivor? Play killer instead! (please do... the que times for survivor are pretty long....) The sheer number of tense moments of hiding, frantic chase sequences, hilarious debacles, and heroic rescue efforts I've seen and been part of in this game is staggering. The single-player experience is far inferior to playing with friends, but it's still worth a go.

If you can get past the first 5-15 hours of this game, you're bound to like it. It's one of the few games that even after 300+ hours still feels almost as fresh and enjoyable as the week I started playing it.

Finally, no matter what - always boop the snoot.
