It had been a solid decade since the last time I played Half Life 2. So long, in fact, that Steam didn't have record of the last time I played it or the hours played. After recently playing through Black Mesa (an exceptional Half-Life remake), I felt inspired to run back through the entire series. As I type this, I am currently installing Half-Life 2 Episode One. I recall being utterly enamored with Half-Life 2 when it came out in 2004. Back then, I played it on the family PS2, and it was one of my favorite games of all time, in league with the original Star Wars Battlefront.

Half-Life 2 is a great game, and at the time of its' release, an improvement and better experience than the original Half-Life in every way. It does a lot of great things with the drive-able vehicles, a few more unique weapons and alternative fire modes, and the varied locations you get to visit. Even as an adult, nearly 20 years since first playing through it, Ravenholm still strikes a note of uneasiness, a hallmark of the game's unparalleled world design. The gravity gun is just as fun as it was back then, and it makes the final section of the game one of the most enjoyable.

The problem with Half-Life 2 today is that unlike it's predecessor, there is no remake available, and some of it feels and looks very archaic. Black Mesa is a phenomenal remake and one that elevates what the original game was trying to do far beyond the improvements of Half-Life 2. With Black Mesa in the picture, Half-Life 2 is no longer top dog in the Half-Life series. I hope that someday we get a fan-made lovingly crafted remake that honors this game in its' accuracy and scope. Until then, the original version does fine and has plenty of cool moments, and I do wholeheartedly recommend it.

It's been nearly 25 years since I first played Half-Life. I know I've played a time or two since then, and likely once when Half-Life 2 came out. However, it's been a good 13 years since I've last stepped foot in the Black Mesa facility and yet, it's as though I never left.

If your question is simply whether I recommend this game or not, then read no further because this is will be an overwhelmingly positive recommendation.

From the opening tram ride to putting on the HEV suit up to narrowly escaping the Lambda Complex and making your way to Xen, Black Mesa is likely the greatest recreation/remaster of any video game period. I say up to Xen because what Crowbar Collective has done with the back third of the game is so beyond the original in scope, that it may as well be a brand new experience. And that new experience is a masterpiece. Now, it has been many years since I even beat the game and most of the original Xen is lost in my memory, but the new Xen is fantastic at explaining more of the jarring changes that suddenly exist in Half-Life 2.

Black Mesa is a work of art, improving upon the original in every way imaginable. I see no reason to force the original game out of retirement when a faithful, complete, and breathtaking remaster exists. Give this a shot. Engross yourself in the world that put Valve on the map and paved the way for the very platform I am leaving this review on. It's that good.

The Secret of Darkwoods is a fun and whimsical text based adventure. Surprisingly there is more depth than meets the eye, with an "open world" to explore, basic character stats and leveling, and equipment and consumables, what I expected to be a glorified Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book turned out to be something a little bit more. The AI art does a good job of setting the scene and most of the writing is well done. The quests vary in quality from downright laughable to fairly intriguing, but the intriguing outweighed the bad by a healthy margin.

All in all, while this may not be a master class CRPG or have the twists and turns in narrative that a live service MMO or well respected triple A title may have, it still has charm. Charm enough for me to thoroughly enjoy the 5 hours it took me to complete the game and see all that the world of Emeyralia had to offer.

There has been a ton of discussion and reviews centered around the PC performance issues, and while those things can be fixed over time, bad game design and uninteresting mechanics can not. It is good news then that only the former is a problem with STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor. And so, it is from the perspective of game design and a fascination with everything Star Wars that I will write this review. For as useless as it is to beat a dead Bantha, so to is another review lamenting the issues that I certainly had plague my own experience. No, what's important to discuss rather, is Jedi: Survivor a good game?

Yes. Yes it is.

In fact, Jedi: Survivor is one of the strongest narrative Star Wars pieces to come out of the Disney era. It rivals Andor in character development and interesting character motivations. Dialogue is well written and compelling, adding color to the world in which Cal finds himself exploring and ultimately living in. I spent a great deal of time in conversation with various NPCs across all the systems. Each of these moments filling in more of the story and more of the galaxy, a galaxy I am already expertly familiar with. Never the less, these moments were a nice break from the action packed combat and allowed for steady pacing all the way through to the games conclusion.

The combat is great, better even than Fallen Order. More Lightsaber stances means more variation in combat, and more variation means a better play-your-way experience. Of course, some stances are better suited for different encounters or different objectives, but having access to two that you can freely switch between means you can prepare for a broader range of encounters without constantly switching at meditation points. Boss fights then become a dance where you feel just as capable as the enemy you are facing down, allowing you the confidence to know that you could defeat them on first try (with the exception of one particular fight, and that is by design). This is further explored within the perk system (think charms in Hollow Knight) that gives you further boosts in combat. I do wish these would have been expanded upon, however it would have made for over saturation in an already collectible rich world.

There are fun distractions in Jedi: Survivor that don't directly involve lightsaber combat or the main story. These center around Pyloon's Saloon, an early found hub that you will frequent throughout the game. I don't want to give too much away but they give you the opportunity to actually use all the databank info and collectibles you can come across in the world. And again, Fallen Order's collecting for the sake of collecting or lore is improved upon. Even cosmetics are greatly improved upon in Jedi: Survivor: more outfits, hair styles, lightsaber components, BD-1 components, materials, colors, etc. There's simply more to this game than its predecessor.

I don't really have any negatives, certainly nothing that actually takes away from the game's experience. Again, I am not going to dive into the PC performance issues, though trust me, I experienced many crashes, low frame rates, and stuttering. A few things I'd like to have seen expanded upon or added are ultimately unnecessary in a game that already took me 73 hours to complete. I do think that the Kenobi and OG trilogy cosmetics that were pre-order bonuses should have just been included in the game from the beginning. Or at least make them available for purchase later on. the DL-44 blaster and Rebel hero jacket were key to my fashion for a good chunk of my journey.

Jedi: Survivor is a good video game, but more importantly it's a FANTASTIC Star Wars game. We haven't been treated to characters this good in Star Wars video gaming since KOTOR II. I hope EA and Respawn can learn from the technical issues this game is facing, because the soul of this game is spectacular, and I can't wait to see what a third installment could bring.

When I first booted up Divinity: Original Sin 2 at the behest of a good friend who had also done so, I didn't know that I'd spend the next nearly 100 hours of play time exploring one of the richest worlds in RPGs. I didn't know that I'd bear witness to a mad woman slaughter a ship full of my captors. I didn't know that I could go from annoyance towards a certain red lizard, to admiration. I didn't know that the phrase, "I'LL KILL YOUR SHINING LIGHTS" would invoke so much terror in me. I didn't know that turtles and rats could fall in love. I didn't know that living ships could manifest intimate bed chambers within themselves. I didn't know that I'd fall in love with Rivellon, Lohse, Beast, The Red Prince, and the other eccentric cast of characters that make up the narrative brilliance that is found in this game.

I didn't know a lot of things that I do now, and that experience of finding all the cool encounters, interactions, items, characters, and locations is what makes this game so special. If you like stellar characters, don't mind dynamic and addictive turn based combat, and are searching for a game that respects your ingenuity as a role player, I'm happy to say that your search is over.

My original sandbox style MMO experience was Runescape. Now there is a lot one can say about Runescape, both good and bad, but they definitely nailed the crafting and gathering grind. And New World has done the very same thing in a good way. Plus NW has the added bonus of having a gorgeous and exciting world to explore and gather in.

I have enjoyed exploring various zones, killing various enemies, and chopping all the trees. I do hope AGS adds more in game content down the line, maybe lore friendly minigames and more expeditions, but as a brand new MMO, it stands on its own.

Combat is a little more exciting than tap-target combat of RS, WoW, ESO, or SWTOR. It's very situational and that's just PVE.

UPDATE 1 YEAR LATER - New World has a great level 1-30 experience. After that it falls off incredibly in sense of exploration, and uniqueness. The grind from 30-40 is ramped up to an insane level and beyond 40 just plain sucks. It does still stand on its own, and for PvP it has its moments. But the expertise grind and the fact that you can't do much with other people unless you too grind your way past the 600 gear score soft cap sucks. I do not recommend this anymore in its current state.

Hades is the top down 3d Dead Cells you never knew you needed. I'm sure there are better comparisons out there, but in game play feel, these two strike a similar chord.

Fast fluid combat, a myriad of collectibles, upgrades, and a handful of weapons... there's a lot here to make you want to try to escape over and over and over again. Voice acting and writing is exceptional as well. Great humor from all the characters, and the voice actors are excellent. My favorite is the training skeleton and his signature "boyo."

This game is a challenge, which is always welcome in my collection. I have yet to beat it, but I am nowhere near done trying. Just one more run... and another... and another...

The pinaccle of all FPS's on steam today, CSS (as it's often abbreviated) provides unlimited hours worth of entertainment. The game itself has two seperate mods, Hostage, and Bomb defusal. For those players that enjoy a competitive and professional level of gaming, those mods are for you. There are countless gaming leagues that support tournaments in CSS. Perhaps you're not that competitive, CSS will still please you by the seemingly limitless amount of player made mods. If you like zombies, there's a mod for that. If you enjoy imitating a prison riot, there's a mod for that. Perhaps you simply enjoy a good ol' death match, there's a mod for that. There's even a mod for the lax gamer who enjoys something different every round (Minigame mod). This game is one of the top played games on Steam for a reason. I highly recommend it.

Killing Floor is a fast paced, wave-style, FPS. Kill hordes of mutated monsters by yourself or with six other players in multiplayer mode, or brave the one man challenge and play solo. Choose from seven different perks as well as assorted weaponry to assist you in your mutant-slaying. This game also allows for map editing, providing numerous player made maps. If you love gore, killing mutants/zombies, or wave-style battle, this game is for you!
