Still no return of the missing 230 countries despite Sony retracting their PSN requirements, but all the same with the latest update and the introduction of the game's faction the Illuminate, the game play and community has been better than ever, albeit with the occasional QA issue still abound.

May 4 2024
And now Sony steps forth like the autocratic despots that they are to defile yet another game with such great potential. How can publishers be so blind to the damage they do not only to themselves but the game industry as a whole out of their reckless greed? I mean seriously Steam services nearly 230 different countries, while the PSN only services about 70, then they have the gall to threaten people with the loss of their legally purchased products for no other reason than not living in the right country, disgusting.

As far as I'm aware, because their Discord is full and has been since the first week, the developers Arrow Head are not pleased with this situation either and need all active and reservist Hell Divers to let their displeasure be known to Sony in whatever constructive method possible, be it reviews, refunds, emails, etc.

Are you doing your part?

And now the recent update has induced near constant crashes, probably due to their inadequate server quality to deal with their new weather system. Joy.

***

Fun as the game may be that first hour or so of game play was absolutely painful due to a combination of limited starting tools, practically no one playing below Difficulty 4, enemy waves not being scaled to player count, and armored enemy mechanics.

Honestly the only solution to the primary issue is to give new players more tools right out of the gate, because unfortunately until you hit level 3 and have 3000 Requisition points to buy the Expendable Anti-Tank stratagem your ability to deal with armored enemies is entirely dependent upon your abilities to dodge and land 2 HE Grenades (8 more with Resupply) with a 3.5s fuse or a single Orbital Precision Strike with a 4s delay, both on a 100s timer, which most assuredly will not be enough to deal with the amount of armored enemies you will have to face alone if you are to graduate from Difficulty 3.

So in short, convince your friends to buy the game with you and avoid Difficulty 3 until you have the Expendable Anti-Tank stratagem, or wait to see if they ever fix the horrendous early game experience.

It's about damn time.

Ten years we've been looking forward to an Armored Core game, and with practically no way to enjoy previous games without hunting down over priced physical copies and backwards compatible PS2s and PS3s. But I am overjoyed to say that Armored Core 6 hits the spot, and occasionally the feels. After 100%-ing the game, I can only hope that From Soft plans on releasing some DLC soon, because while PVP is nice, more missions and more parts would be even better.

Now with the praise out of the way, I'll get to the two needling points that has irked me from the start. The first is the Helicopter bosses constantly leaving the battle grounds making S Ranking the first mission more a matter of RNG than skill and thus quite a bit annoying, particularly because you're locked into a specific loadout and your only weapon capable of carrying you through it is your pulse sword. There's also a later mission with another Helicopter boss which is less annoying due to the options you have by then, but still a grating reminder of the first mission's failings.
Second is the game's tendency to crash while tabbing, which is majorly unfortunate as this game practically requires you to tab back and forth through guides to get 100%. Other than that it runs surprisingly smoothly, perhaps given the relatively smaller map sizes.

All in all, a solid Armored Core game that I can't help but recommend.

Do not pay full price for this game.

Don't get me wrong, the core game loop is fun and the game is atmospheric as ♥♥♥♥, but the lack of optimization, near constant crashes, and horrendous design decisions, particularly regarding matchmaking and team coordination ensure this game is not worth the full price tag.

Review from December 2023
Patch is unstable as ♥♥♥♥, crashes roughly every hour so until they bother to fix their run away memory leak, avoid or endure frequent crashes.

Review from October 2023
A year later and as was the case with Vermintide 2 the game is in a far better place, both optimization and stability, but especially class customization wise with the latest update. Now if only item crafting wasn't such a RNG ridden time sink. Well, not every change can be for the better, but over all it is far superior to it's release.

Review from November 2022
This unoptimised bug ridden mess is borderline Alpha let alone Beta, as it routinely crashes every four to five games on a good day. So take it from someone who suffered through Vermintide 2's apocalyptic launch, give it about three to four months before even considering touching this game if you don't exceed the listed specs by a significant margin, and especially if you can't stand constant crashes.
Now, so that I don't end this on such a sour note, I am pleasantly surprised to find that the latency of their servers is more than adequate, and ice skating is so infrequent as to be unnoticeable, which is a massive improvement over VT2s hockey rink-esque combat.

Assuming this game isn't dead on arrival it'll be a year or longer shart show for it to get anywhere near completion, which unfortunately has just about become the industry standard.

The instability and bugs alone will take a quarter to fix minimum, going by VT2's history, but additionally quite a few of the core designs will require reworking as they are seemingly designed to frustrate the player for no benefit. This begins with the mission terminal funneling people into a limited selection of maps with random secondary objectives on 10 min recycle loops. Progresses to a lack of partial credit for weekly bonuses, effectively requiring you to find all items within a single mission to get a single credit toward said weeklies, and thus relying on players who still routinely fail to grasp the concept of cooperation within a coop survival shooter. Only to stumble as the rewards are soon eclipsed by your random drops and items found in the armory. But maybe the weeklies are just for end game content, maybe.

Before landing headfirst into a wall of guns at higher difficulties as standard ranged mobs out damage their elite and special counterparts individually. This is magnified by the absence of cover in key set positions on most maps, particularly the Jail map which opens up with a bridge crossing that has no flank routes, and spawns twenty ranged mobs behind cover at the far end of the bridge. Then to add insult to injury, though I do have to compliment the detailed AI work this entails, the AI will attempt to retreat in stages, leaving some behind to tie you up, namely those you injured, while the rest seek cover and resume firing, and a few cheeky mobs, those who were injured initially but aren't currently being attacked, will simply back up and pour fire into you at point blank ranges.
In concept this is cool, till you realize that they can break your "Toughness" shield in as few as 6 hits, with full auto weapons, that then proceed to melt you in 2-3 seconds, even while surrounded by their own comrades. With the only counter play involved being swing faster or harder to try and regenerate your Toughness faster than they can deplete it, which is a losing game.
Now unfortunately what happens more often than not is a one sided massacre as you attempt to cross said single open path, or a slightly slower massacre if you attempt to peak and snipe them out of their superior position, while anyone with a shotgun or playing an ogyrn is left effectively as your recharge buddy, because your Toughness only regenerates when next to someone or when you kill mobs in melee, or attack in melee with talents. The former of which takes as much as 10-30 seconds to recharge fully depending on the number of allies nearby, and which again can be broken in two bursts of lasgun fire from the enemy.
And just so you are aware dear reader, your Toughness and HP do not increase as you level, only your access to more Talents, and presumably damage. So regardless of your level accomplishing anything on those open map sections in Difficulty 4 or 5 is practically impossible. And this is with 20+ level characters.
Then the cherry on top of this shart sunday, Difficulty 4 opens up at level 10 (could be sooner memory is fading), subconsciously suggesting that you are ready for said difficulty with a third of your talents and presumably damage. It'd almost be comical if the game wasn't coming out 1 month from this posting.

But not to be entirely negative, once you get at least a third of your talents at level 10, you typically have the fire power and durability necessary to out kill the enemy in Difficulty 3, which by far seems to be a more balanced and enjoyable experience while remaining relatively challenging even for higher level characters and more skilled players. So there is plenty of potential, but it'll take time and skill to see the game becomes something worth full price.

Definitely still a work in progress, but currently the RNG is too aggressive.

I can make it through the first level unscathed, and occasionally with two or more weapons with a full stack of ammo for each and at least one armor piece, and even occasionally with low aggro (200 or less), but without fail, the first hallway I enter on the second level always has six or more zombies that immediately charge, even with low aggro, and some occasionally have grenades. And that of course assumes Satan himself doesn't spawn out of the recently deceased and doesn't auto kill you with his blue ball of death.

Now maybe in the future when it has more features besides Starvation, Infection, and Death, it could be a game worth paying for, currently though it's just a frustration generator so I can definitely see why the dev has decided to offer it for free while he tinkers with it. Still a mildly amusing time sink.

Mount and Blade: Bannerlord is still not really worth your money, but it could be given a bit more time.

After a number of bug fix passes I am happy to say the game no longer refuses to close down or causes Steam to crash when forced to close via task manager, but frankly that should not be praise worthy.

Regardless I have yet to get into any particularly large battles in campaign yet, though if it runs as smoothly as custom battles then it is obvious they've been doing quite a bit of optimizing in the background.

Particularly in regard to the length of load screens, which are about twice as quick now, their proclivity however especially if one is doing missions is still a bit much, frankly the use of more windows would be preferable to loading a map just to talk to someone, even if it was a feature of the previous games. After all I shouldn't have to load a map just to tell a bunch of looters to surrender or die for the hundredth time, or reload the same map to tell a merchant to mind his own business.

Beyond that, while they are certainly whittling away at the list of bugs and exploits, it is still quite large, not to mention there are bound to be quite a few balancing passes in the future, as some units have skills that don't reflect their tier or equipment, while others are basically unusable.

...
OLD REVIEW
As much as I once loved Mount and Blade Warband: Bannerlord is not currently worth your money.

Between the innumerable minute long loading screens, utterly abysmal optimization, and a list of bugs so long it should be a forum unto itself, the minor improvements to graphics, combat, or control matter not, as you won't really get to enjoy it beneath the quagmire of inadequacy.

So try back next year, or better yet when it goes on sale for more than a 20% discount.

It's been a long while since I've found an MMO I can stomach, I mean I used to enjoy old school WoW, but there's only so much one can do with it's combat system, not to mention subscription model.
Afterward I experimented a little with Action MMOs like Vindictus, which wasn't half bad but had a massively slow progression grind, not to mention predatory pay model.
Before eventually all but giving up MMOs in favor of more instanced PVE games.

Then a couple of days ago I heard Black Desert Online was free to keep, so figuring I had nothing to lose I hoped on, and spent the next four hours dancing across the battle fields giggling maniacally at the controlled chaos one could unleash with a magical boomerang.

Is it perfect? No, I think the UI's a bit too cluttered, but it seems you can change most of it to suit your personal tastes, so that's mostly just my lack of experience with it. And the character based aspects can be a little annoying if you're overly preoccupied with creating your perfect simulacrum. But at the base of it the game is enthralling for these two main reasons:

1. The movement and targeting is Action based, no more standing around or simply strafing to avoid pre-targeted AOEs, all attacks must be thought out and aimed to a certain degree, you can't just click and auto spam. Additionally your attacks generally can't be canceled, and your character has a bit of momentum to their movements, so thinking ahead can save you quite a bit of pain, especially if you go into a substantially higher level area.
Those familiar with the Darksouls franchise will feel at home here.

2. Fighter-esque combat, and by that I mean each attack you know that would normally be applied to your typical MMO hot bar, can instead still be equipped to a smaller sleeker hotbar, but additionally activated through button combos not unlike most fighters.
For instance Shift is typically your character's Dodge button, while LMB is your Light Attack, which generates Stamina, and RMB your Heavy Attack, which spends Stamina. Or for instance with the Shai character, S+RMB is a AOE Block that throws your Boomerang at short range blocking any damage coming from that direction while also dealing significant damage, or A+LMB for a wide short range AOE to help clear swarming mobs off you, or LMB+RMB for a long range line attack to start off or focus your damage with.
Street Fighter/Tekken fans will be amused by the rather simple combos, while others will be amazed and how fluid combat feels with some practice.

If neither of those descriptions does it for you, then the game's not for you, if both of those sound like the best thing ever, then get it while it's free to keep, because as far as I know there is no subscription model, unlike certain pay to sub games out there... WoW for instance.

A beautiful mess is the best way to describe this game, from the start of the game where you mine to make ends meat and get your ass handed to you by hungry hobos, to the moment you begin building your gang into something to be feared across the lands, right up to the point you build your first base only to have it stolen from you by stronger and crazier bandits, only then to slaughter them to a man or robot after training your asses off a city or two away. Truly there is nothing more immersive... save for meat giving you about half the calories of an eggplant of course, seriously, fix that ♥♥♥♥, people can't digest fiber.

But hey it's stupid easy to mod as well, so even if the devs are a bunch of vegans, you too can mod the game to support the superiority of carnivores the world over!

As a Legendary Backer I cannot in all good conscience recommend this game due not only to resent decisions made by their less than honest CEO Russ Bullock, but due to their near predatory release schemes that relies on a combination of ridiculous grind and player impatience with said grind, as well as timed exclusives and arguable power creep to lure players into overspending on digital goods that are reliably changed within a month of release, and usually for the worse to make the next mech release that much more tantalizing.

Now is the game fun? Well that depends whether or not you're facing a 12 man with nothing but over optimized Clan mechs, which is basically an entire game mode in itself, a very unbalanced one in fact. But at the very least it's free, so you can learn for yourself just how ridiculous it is for yourself. Just do me and every other disenchanted Backer a favor, don't spend a single cent as you grind out your first lance of mechs, ideally one of each weight class, then tell me how you feel by the end of it. My guess "burned out" will rank pretty high on such a poll.
