I refused to buy this game for quite some time. My friends would try to convince me to get it so that I could play with them. When I finally gave in, I loved it from the moment I played a match and really wished I'd been here from the start.

If you're in doubt, get it, you won't regret it. It's stupidly fun, and really simple to understand and play at a basic level, but really hard to master.

A game that follows the Telltale formula, but because it's played more as a documentary, it makes sense that you don't get to have a massive effect on the way the story unfolds. If you're a fan of history, like me, then it's a pretty safe buy. You'll get to experience an interesting journey through one of the events that shaped the 20th century.

Newgrounds has joke games too. They're free as well, and way better. Honestly this is far too simple (simpler than those games I mentioned) to be a good April fools thing. It's basic, boring, and lacking any charm or self awareness.

Fallout 4 is a decent game, but this is a good Fallout game. The only thing that's bad is the technology behind it, which Obsidian didn't make. So if you're patient enough (and trust me, if I can put up with this you can too), you'll get pretty much the original Fallout experience out of this game. It's cheaper too, so... bonus points.

Ill be honest and say that, at the time, I thought this game was going to fail badly, but turns out it became my favourite one of that year.

Just sit down, and blast tons of nazis while touring the world and even outer space. No MP bulls**t, no microtransactions, no hand holding corridors, just go ahead and have fun. That said, this game is closer to the HL model than to its roots, but it's respectful enough to its history while providing a rewarding campaign.

If you're a fan of the single player FPS model, then this is a must-buy... And if you're not, but the game happens to be on sale, the I'd say give it chance, it might surprise you.

I finished the game today, though I'm yet to experience every possible storyline.

I'd be honest, it has its problems. I've seen a few bugs here and there, and sometimes I felt cheated by the way my choices worked. However, I feel that the gameplay is fluid and interesting enough to get you through the things you need to see and do before you're able to really complete the story (and get a good ending, that is).

I see a lot of room for improvement, but I liked the game overall (the writing and the narrator gave it a big boost). It was a fun ride and, at the end of the day, I feel like I got my money's worth out of it.

Neat little game, it reminds me of another game I liked, Steredenn. It's not only the detailed pixel art, or the fact that they're tough as nails, or that they both have rogue-like elements, but also the fact that they're pretty fair with the player and losing a run doesn't mean anything. You'll be shooting your way around the Gungeon again in no time.

Runs in general are pretty short, so it's a good game to play if you don't have the time to deal with longer -more complex- experiences.

The only thing I didn't like so much was the overreliance on the dodge roll to avoid enemy fire. Coming from other games with bullet hell mechanics you'd think that's not always necessary, but it's an integral part of the game. Aside from that I don't have any major complains. The music's good, the theme is fun, the references are all there.

Get this game, you'll have a blast with it.

It's still in early access and it reminds me of what the full release of Endless Space was. To quote Howard Jones I'd say things can only get better.

It may not be enough for some people though, right now I'd advice those who aren't fans of MoO to wait a bit before buying so they don't get the wrong impression about the game, but for the rest of us I'd say it's a worthy reboot that takes the best from every other game in the series.

Long War Update:

Long War adds SO much to the game, and it also makes everything in my original review worse. One would say that it accentuates the original experience, so, if you enjoyed XCOM 2, then you'll have a blast. For me it was a big let down. Not only performance drops to it lowest point ever, but the friggin timers are back.

I assume LW doesn't play nice with the mods I had, so that's another problem I would have to deal with if I felt like playing this game in the future (which I won't).

First Update:

You can now remove explicit timers from the game via mods (doing so won't disable any achievements). Keep in mind, though, that the game was designed around that "mechanic", and there're still plenty of implicit timers around (civilians, objective defense, unlimited spawns, etc). In light of that, and the fact that modders are just kind strangers and not Firaxis, my review remains the same.

Original review:

Here's my -entirely subjective- view of this game as of now. For the record I'll say that I'm a big fan of the old XCOM as well as EU.

**** CONS **** (i'll list them first since this is a negative review)

- Plenty of timers.

If you liked the council missions where you had to deactivate the bomb on a timer, then you'll be fine. However if you're like me and you like to approach things carefully, then those kinds of ops are going to get boring, fast. I get the whole "urgency" thing, but when 4 out of 5 ops end up being timed (either by a turn counter, or a civilian counter, or any other counter for that matter) it becomes somewhat frustrating. It may be ok on the easier dificulties, but the higher you go the more you'll hate them. And that's not even mentioning having to beat the Avatar Project.

Man Firaxis sure love their timers.

- Shorter soldier list, longer recovery time.

Your guys are expendable, especially during your first hours with the game, but combine the fact that the aliens are now more dangerous and resourceful with the fact that soldiers may take several weeks to heal up after they're wounded (provided they don't die) and you'll end up recruiting A LOT of cannon fodder, spending precious resources that you won't be able to dump anywhere else.

- Friendly Fire.

It's always frustrating to see your soldiers shoot themselves when they panic, but now they not only do that, but also blow your entire squad up with their grenades. Combine with the previous points and you'll get how infuriating this can result.

- Unlimited enemy spawns.

During some ops the enemy will reinforce their numbers, as they did in the previous game. Only that now they'll continue to do so every few turns. What's that? You don't want to risk your guys? Tough luck, you'll do that or you'll be royally f***** whithin a couple turns. Combine with the previous points.

- Bad optimization.

The game ran poorly on my (high-end) system. It'll probably be fixed once the drivers get updated and all that jazz. Hope so anyway. This was the first time I had any kind of problem of this type with XCOM.

- Losing stopped being fun.

Because unlike EU or the older titles, this game does not punish your mistakes. It instead pushes you to make them, then punish you for it, which I found to be a little too much, and I was a regular Ironman Imposible player back in EU.

If you're of those who consider timers realistic, think about this, everyone knows that you never EVER dash/move twice on Classic or Impossible, yet the turn limit forces you to do that. How bad is it? Well, aside from the fact that worrying about the timer takes away from enjoying the rest of the game, you'd think you can always dash safely while conclealed... Only to realize then that you triggered 2 unseen groups and a turret and now your Ironman campaign is going down the toilet, fast. Remember how good it felt to carefully coordinate your squad to wipe out that alien pack in a single turn coming out of concealment?

Good, remember it well, because chances are you're not gonna get to that often.

**** PROS ****

- No thin men.

JK, you'll face worse.

- Meaningful choices

The game is full of them, but the ones I liked the most are those related to soldier classes. A lot was done to improve the skills you get to choose when your guys level up, unlike EU where you picked more or less the same every time.

- No satellites.

Building satellites was a chore, but was almost mandatory in the previous game. That is, luckly, a thing of the past.

- Soldier and weapon customization is over 9000.

- Maps are more diverse and feature a lot more detail.

- You get access to a lot of tech very early on (by XCOM standards), likely to balance the increased alien threat.

- The story is a lot more fleshed out than in the previous game.

I have a lot of positive things to say about XCOM 2 regardless of my negative review, and it's certainly worth the price, if you're the kind that enjoys the changes they made to gameplay. I'm not one of those people, and that's why I'm giving this one a thumbs down. Consider it carefully before buying though, or you could end up like me.

*** Closing Statements *** (Spoilers)

So I've finally -almost- finished the game. I've seen everything it has to offer and my feelings are of disappointment more than anything else. The equivalent of the base defense and -especially- the final stand are long ops that end up feeling like a chore. The final mission is pretty similar to the one on EU, perhaps a bit shorter, but pretty much the same. What's unforgivable, at least for me, is the fact that they spiked the difficulty at the end so hard it makes no damn sense.

You can pretty much complete the op breaking face all the way to the last encounter, which throws A LOT of BS your way. So I basically shut down the game and fired up YouTube to see the ending cutscene, because I was not going to do that all over again (You can see how much I cared for the game at this point).

Completing the campaign (or at least 99.9% of it) on Commander Ironman took me a sweet time and was fun at times, but there was a lot of stress and boredom involved as well. There were times when I just wanted to get it over with, and the final op was the last nail on XCOM's coffin for me, I didn't feel any reason to re do everything and try again afterwards, much less jumping on legend, though the game cheats a lot less than it did on Impossible back on EU.

If you made it this far I thank you for your time :)

Cheers.

A really fun game overall, if a little hard. It gets the most important thing right, which is to be fair with the user. Losing is almost meaningless since you'll be blasting enemies again in no time.

Oh and the soundtrack is pure gold, it works perfectly with the vibe they were aiming for.
