Great game and they've very much cleaned up character balance, cost of new characters, and maps with the dlc. However, make sure you do a little research before buying dlc as not all the deals are even. I pre-purchased everything, but the starter edition is more then enough to see if you like the game. Starter comes with 6 characters from the start.

Most characters are under $10 or 10 hours of gameplay (or $5 and 5 hours of gameplay, etc), and most people only play 1 or 2 characters. All are balanced at low to mid tiers of play and balance way less impactful in 4v4 modes.
