I have no idea what this game is really trying to be. The combat isn't good enough for it to be just a shooter.. There isn't enough else going on to make it really feel like a MOBA.. The closest thing I can think of is "The Cycle".

Basically you do some PVE - which is mostly a waste of time because getting PVP kills is much better essence. So you have a few teamfights and whoever wins just snowballs the rest of the game because of the advantage in levels they have.

The whole concept of the game is not compelling in the least. I have no idea the direction it is intending to go in but it would probably have better luck as a traditional MOBA with lanes and creep waves more than this arena shooter teamfight style thing it is trying to do. The current game modes are just boring. Poorly thought out and void of any strategy. Just use clunky combat to kill..

After my first match I thought, "wow that really wasnt any fun at all.. maybe I am missing something?" played 5 more games and not one time did I think "that was really cool!" or "that was really fun!" .. nothing.. I tried all the characters out.. but in the end I just cannot find one redeeming quality about the game. I have nothing at all positive to say about it.

This is everything I had hoped for in this game, even in EA.. Is it 100% finished? Of course not, but certainly 85-90%. Some things need to be fully added, some things just aren't functional.

The reputation system is not perfect yet, as it's very hard to gain rep with others, but very easy to lose it. But the economy is super fleshed out. I started as a merchant to get myself going and could easily see how my efforts were effecting cities I traded in, their prosperity, and thus mine as eventually I owned workshops and saw them flourish as I made sure they had the necessary items to produce goods.

As far as performance goes, I don't really have much to complain about.. It runs fine on my machine and only super-massive battles do I see frame drops in the start.. Sometimes it does crash, but I'm used to frequently hitting that F5 button (quicksave) so even if I do, it's only a few minutes lost..

I have sort of seen the "snowball" people talk about, but in my experience each time it happens, the faction eventually crumbles.. There are a lot of NPCs and they certainly flock to strong factions. I think it will be more manageable in my subsequent playthrough now that I know a lot more..

All in all, this is shaping up to be just as legendary as the original. I didn't expect a perfect game from the start, but am still impressed about what is in the game and functioning now. There are many things that are clearly placeholders and things you can see have a presence but not fully functional... That is fine with me..

It is now Friday - the game came out Monday.. so in 4 days I have 75 hours played.. And I am not a "fanboy" by any means and wouldn't blindly praise something just because... In fact the original game I played more of the GoT mod than the regular game. But for $40, I have already surpassed my criteria ($1 per hour) of getting a good game with value. I am sure I will have a decent amount more as I finish up my campaign and maybe another soon.. But I also know that when the game is fully released, I will double my time again to experience the full force.

Campaign is 3-4 hr long and not really fun to begin with. About half way through that it just turned into a platformer. Literally no enemies or action, just dumb puzzles to get from point A to point B, which someone clearly created under the influence of fungi.

My idea was there would be a situation and you would figure out creative ways to complete it and continue going. Realistically you rush into something and figure it out as you go, under fire. The whole premise of the game is to do a "level" and then repeat it a million times to try and get the fastest/highest score.

My gold standard for if a game is worth it or not is if you get $1/hr out of it. This is about 1/4 of that, and then expected to play the same 1/4 over and over.

It has an awesome idea but the execution and "game loop" missed the mark for me.

To me, this is the best BR out there.

It isn't an arcade BR - it is extremely tactical with strong PvE elements. Anybody good at shooting will obviously be good at this but the thing is you need to be hyper sensitive to sounds around you. So a lot of arcade BR players run around and make noise without a care.. That equals the playing field for someone who is better at locating enemies and taking the GOOD shot rather than build a fort quickly, or baseball slide and blast someone with a shotgun. Most guns are bolt-action, or pump-action, or single shot-action, or single-action so it is very much about making your shots count.

The Civil War vibes fit perfectly, the PvE elements are fun. I wish I had more hours in the game but that is how intense it gets. Sure, some people spam it and rush through each round. There is a grind to unlock stuff so that is fine. But I enjoy getting into the environment and what it is, because I want my shots to count.

Probably the best sports game out there.. But without anti-cheat .. I can't give it a thumbs up, since PC gets the middle finger. I enjoy the other modes more than multiplayer which is unfortunate.

Can't recommend this game in the current state.
It does run really well but there really is not a lot of content. In ~2hr, I was able to "camp" the military base and get a ton of gear and run it back to the "safe" storage. Could die 5 times before I actually started to lose gear. So the only option is to go engage in PVP and kill people for gear I also don't need. There is no reward.
Basically the game right now is "kill/loot more items than you die". Once you achieve that, there isn't much to worry about. That is the gameplay loop and is easily obtained.
You can turn the ambient sounds off in game, so you can turn off the annoying birds constantly chirping. The gun sounds are also horrible. They sound very low quality, but also upon hearing gunshots, I was spinning around to try and get a better idea of the direction, but it just came from my right headphone no matter what direction I faced. Maybe it was because of the distance. We figured it had to be at the nearest POI, and as we got closer the sounds were more specific but at the original distance there was no way to tell what direction it was coming from.
I really just can't think of anything this game does better than another game. But when I reached that "refund or not" time, I couldn't think of one reason I'd want to play the game again.

At first I wasn't really sure about this game. But it (so far) is a really well made game from a genre that you don't see much of these days. Monkey Island was the first game I feel in love with as a kid. As it progressed and the production value went up, it changed.. Not necessarily for the worse, but this game feels more like the original. Especially the art. I'm not TOO deep into the story, but Kathy is charming enough and has her funny moments. One time she even called me out for "overthinking" something I WAS overthinking.
I haven't played this type of adventure game in so long, so I completely forgot about it. It is not something that should be forgotten as it was the pillars of the games of today. But it is totally something I would want to have in my regular single-player rotation.
So big props to the devs for making a quality game, and giving it away for the anniversary which (hopefully) gave a lot of others the same nostalgia of playing those epic adventure games from the early 90s. Thanks!

After playing almost non stop for the past week since it was released, I wanted to write a review to point out just how damn good this game is.
If you have ADD, yes it is a 2D Rust with a Fortnite twist (wait for it).

The charming graphics seem simple. You see other players running around doing their thing, and it's all cute until they whip out a gun and blast you away. Don't let you think the 2d graphics mean the game is not incredibly deep either. The crafting system is vast, as well as the skill system. Everything you do earns you XP which earns you Learning points to put into crafting skills.
This leads to an interesting system. It is almost necessary to play with others because it is very difficult to unlock everything at the upper tiers. However you run into an issue where if your group is too big, you are competing for xp from crafting/gathering. That is a important balance to find in addition to the sheer mass of resources needed. The "primary" skills typically offer items that are materials built into other trees and needed to combine for a grand item. You would be at a disadvantage to only craft guns for example because all the materials needed for the guns and ammo are made by someone else. But also, the more people you have, the easier it is to push though when you need masses of resources to build a base and stockpile others.

From what I have seen in 1 week, smaller groups are a threat, but still get wiped out by larger groups. It is just too difficult to keep up with offense, defense, and your base defenses. But hey, it is Early Access so they will have some growing pains that every hardcore survival PVP game has had and deal with them.
The curious part is caving to the PVE crowd. Leave that to the mods and custom servers that want to play that way, but the vast majority of this crowd is from PVP survival games. That is where the content needs to go and valuable development time. Mentioning Mods, that is where this game will shine. Once people start getting creative, there will be a lot of interesting content. I do hope the vanilla game keeps pumping out content as well, but seeing what people create will of course be very interesting. I just don't see the point of playing this game to live in a base in peace.. I guess for those people it is a variation of a multiplayer Stardew Valley.

So.. I mentioned Fortnite, so if you stuck around I'll explain that.. I hate Fortnite because I hate building. When I see people good at the game, it is impressive but quite literally not a skill I even want to be good at.. What do I do in Cryofall? Well my loadout is to carry some spare wood and a toolbox. Since there are KOS people, sometimes I run by a base and they run out after me. When this happens I just drop a wall or a "W" wall so they have to waste time moving around it for me to escape, or break their LOS to me so they can't get a shot off.

If you are a fan of survival games and PVP, this has to be on your radar. The only complaint I have heard from my survival friends is it isn't first-person but there is enough there to make you forget about that. There is still plenty of strategy that go into shooting even in 2d that still makes it very competitive.

No idea what is good about this game. There is no story, first off. And if you think there is and want to follow it.. Good luck! You'll progress past the first "chapter" of it in about 30 hours.

After my first attempt, I thought.. "it cant be that dumb.. can it?" so I restarted a new character.. and yes, it is that dumb. After the second character again rain into problems I then thought I should ask a friend... So I joined a friend who gave me some end game content. Cool! this is the stuff im working toward right? it should make things better!!! NOPE. This isn't Dark Souls hard, this is NOT FUN hard. The punishment for failing??? HA..

I really don't have anything good to say besides it had potential. But if this is their vision the game is horrible. You respawn when you die? cool... but that also assists you so sometimes you WANT to die to fast travel. Nice feature.
The bosses - dive behind them and attack... dive behind them and attack... dive behind them and attack... That is the only mechanic, besides try to dodge the RNG of the piss poor tab targeting which will probably make you use your heavy attack in the wrong direction..

Let me make this very clear - The only good aspects of this game are thinking it "might" be good later on. That was SOOOO fun... But it isn't... gameplay isnt, mechanics arent.. story isnt..

Cant think of anything positive about the game besides I was bamboozled into playing it before getting a refund.

In the end, it is a fun city-management game.
There are some cool unique features, like allowing you to customize your UI to show you the information you want to see, where you want it. Also changing your view to a sort of "heatmap" that highlights and color coordinates resources all over the map. It was a fun playthrough although I don't see a reason to do it again yet.

It is not a challenging game. After about 5-6 hr I left the game open and went to sleep. The AI is also not very bright and will starve to death without trying to get food. Also putting something as "high importance" does not help it get built faster, or first as they would still go and put 50% resources in other buildings and thus not have enough to finish the one I marked. /shrug
The actual annoying part is that I have about 80 pigs/goats. I am trying to save straw for buildings so I want less animals to feed. I have literally spent YEARS trying to cut down on my pig/goat population. My people spend half a year to kill 40 goats, the next half year harvesting/working, then the next killing 40 pigs, and by that time there is 80 goats again. Even telling the game I want goats/pigs to only be 50% of my population (should be 40-50 each) they still swell out of control. I also tell my village to stop collecting bone as that has 0 use late game, yet sure enough *I* spend half a year going through my storage deleting bones they continue to collect.

For $20-25 its fun for a romp. Hopefully there are some tweaks and more content in the future. The difference in spawn choices don't seem to make a difference in having different resources and thus different challenges. But like I said, if I can go AFK for 8-10 hours and come back to no issues, that just speaks to how little of a challenge there is and how little of a threat "raiders" are.

EDIT: After 2 years I revisited the game and am not impressed at all.
You cannot AFK anymore, since you need to tell your people to prepare to defend an attack.. OK.
1) There are just weird mechanics.. For example, building walls into natural formations like mountains is pointless because there is always a gap to squeeze though. So need to connect the walls at all corners. Deal breaker? No, but an example of simple oversights.
2) The AI is still incredibly stupid.
a) My guy took a sled with logs to go build a wall, he gets there and decides he is too tired and heads back to town. Another person comes up and takes the sled with all the logs on it back to base, to load it with meat that is finished drying, to move it NEXT DOOR to the storage.. Completely disregarding the 3 other empty sleds just feet away.
b) My people are constantly dying of starvation despite having 2x more food than population. WHY? This has been an issue for years... If people are vegetarians or something, the game needs to tell you.
3) The gameplay loop in general is meh.. You get Knowledge points for building something the 1st time, then maybe 5, 10x, etc.. varies on the item. You need these points to progress, so you find yourself building stuff you don't need yet, just to progress. Makes no sense for a city/resource management game to waste these resources just to farm points to progress.
The tech tree itself is underwhelming. After 10m of watching your people be stupid, just to farm you points, you unlock things that 50% of the time do nothing - they are just needed to progress to something else. So enjoy sitting there doing nothing for another 10m.
There comes a point where your city is pretty big, and food is no longer abundant. But then your people die because they don't eat, then you need to scale back your workforce to compensate, just to grow again and watch people die.
My counter to that was to make more farmland so people have to travel less and not die from walking for 30 seconds - and put it on high priority (the only thing on high prio). Workload still under 100% and guess who is doing the high priority work? 0 people and I have plenty of tools to do it.
Which brings me to another "minor" point, as I unlocked better tools and such, I don't see any effect on the work being done more efficiently.

There are tons of other similar games that are more fleshed out and just.. makes more sense. After playing again for another 10h, I don't see the need to play again until another massive update because no matter what scenario you pick, it is the same waiting game of farming the same points for the same underwhelming unlocks.
