It's not normal. But depending on your age, it might be a spontaneous erection. I used to get those a lot when I was younger. If it wasn't a spontaneous boner, then it's probably the 'feel' of having 'weight' on top of you (and not the dog itself). If you cover yourself with pillows and blankets, it may not have the same effect, since a pillow is stationary. I don't think you should worry. As long as you don't pleasure yourself, or find sexual pleasure from the dog, then you're fine. Because that would be ****ing immoral, and disgusting brah.
