I loved Dark Souls 1. This is no Dark Souls 1. This is a fanfiction-level imitation of Dark Souls 1 made by a different team. All the familiar parts seem to be there, but it's missing its spark, its sublime quality. Very disappointing but I'll 100% complete it anyways...

-Looser combat
-Zero interesting characters
-GOTCHA deaths, *swarming* packs of enemies, slower estus drinking; in lue of difficulty
-Lame boss designs (google Old Iron King, or Darklurker)
-Cheesy dialogue
-Bittersweet tone/feel is gone since plot is lame and can't be arsed to care
-Drab, grey lifeless settings and scenery
-Greater emphasis on platforming (ugh)
-Several areas more annoying than Blighttown

+Awesome armor and weapons
+Dragon Aerie is pretty neat place (featured heavily in trailers and only place they put effort into)
+Skulltulas are creepy and fun to kill
+Homicidal dwarves

Update: Just found (and beat) the Frigid Outskirts. A new low. This game is absolute crap. SKIP IT.

Land. Pass.
Land. Pass.
Land. Pass.
Land. Pass.
Game? Pass.

If you prefer luck that removes skill as a factor, one-sided blow-outs, and long pauses where nothing happens on either side, this is the game for you.
For the rest of us, perhaps someday creators will find a way to soften the worst flaws of a 23-year-old game mechanic.

Update: They did upgrade the mulligan mechanic since this review, but getting only ONE still means it’s still left with all the issues of drawn land resources with somehow less options to deal with it than in MTG.
