This may seem like a great supernatural mystery, but at the same time its probably one of the most Christian games out there. I don't mean "a bible game", but a game acually dealing with the mysteries of Christian religion. It takes theme's concerning sin, redemption, justice, mercy, man as his own god, loss, a fallen world, temptation of power and sex and blends all these elements and more into a great cohesive original story. I have to say I'm very pleasently surprised at the (spiritual) depth on offer in this game.

If at all any of the religious/existential themes resonate, or even if you are just in it for a gripping mystery with some dashes of horror, jump right in. Highly recommended.

A genuinely funny, charming adventure game. It has some great voice acting, interesting characters. It parodies many things, from Lord of the Rings and World of Warcraft, to Monkey Island and Indiana Jones. Some games tend to reference stuff without being funny, witty or creative about it... The Book of Unwritten tales manages to incorporate a lot of culture, but make it it's own in a joke or in a world thats crazy but not incoherent.

Following Three main characters (and a surprise 4th one) through many misadventures, the game manages to be both ridiculous (in a good way) and kind of epic. It has a great length, without overstaying its welcome. And I really liked the puzzles in this one. Weird but never illogical or random. The only criticism I can think of is that it gets a bit too fetch-questy around the end. And the actual last cinematic conclusion is a bit abrupt.

Other then that this is a great point and click, which both manages to do tribute to point and clicks of old, yet be something uniquely original as well. Strongly recommended

Fun, charming adventure game, which serves as a prequel to the very entertaining Book of Unwritten tales. Nate, voiced by Doug Cockle voice of Geralt the Witcher and Critter make for a nice duo. Some funny scenarios, great homages to movies, games, books and other cultural references. The length is good for the asking price. There is a lot to like here, even if you haven't played the first game in the series.

Some of the puzzles in the game where pretty great, at other times though some of the click everywhere, combine item A with item B in illogical ways, seemed a bit more prevalent then in the original Book of Unwritten Tales. Also swapping characters and especially swapping items between characters was not done well in a game requiring trying a lot of items in random ways.

Though the story, the puzzles and the endearing ending made it all very much worth it. A must if you like the series, a solid recommendation if you are new and like adventure games.

Having played plenty of adventure games, this one checks the boxes for being a great adventure while its also quite refreshing!

First and foremost, the story in this game is great. Without giving to much away: It deals with Trans-humanism, Moral law, Love, Afterlife and wraps these subjects in a great detective mystery. It leaves the actual progression/branching of the story well and truly in the hands of the players. From front to end it will leave you intrigued, it offered genuine choices and gave an outcome that resonates with my faith and philosophy. Job well done!

The gameplay on offer was also very refreshing. Yes there where great and sometimes challenging puzzles, but (thankfully) not a lot of combine "item a" with "item b" or pixelhunt puzzles, found in most adventure games.

Instead it had you rely on good detective work and deduction from in-game hints and clues. I thought it was very well done. Also depending on your choices and play-styles, you develop unique "powers" in the course of the game. Giving puzzles a unique and personal way to be solved. Big plus, quite creative!

The voice acting is mostly good, maybe not all top shelf, but very serviceable. Same goes for the art-style, it looks nice and is very functional. Music and sound was good too for an indy game especially. All in all I really liked this game, and is well above most Point and Click adventures out there.

Give this one a go Agent!

What a charming game. The Artstyle, characters, story and locations are all oozing with charm.

It helps that everything is written in a humourous, witty style. Especially the back and forth between Jenny and the Narator (among other characters) are a real treat in how the dialogue unpacks. Also the mysteries in this game are actual engaging mysteries. They did their job in that they make the player want to uncover them.

Looking around and exploring the in-game town of Arthurton is always rewarded. The detective element is fleshed out enough to be called engaging, though CSI this is not. The actual puzzling is mostly quite light, with the exception of a few that require some more thought. But this game is never boring, I don't feel it was in need of puzzles that crack your skull.

I really hope the developer continues this story, while there are points to improve upon in a potential part II, this is a very solid recommendation for anyone looking for a Charming, Funny and Witty Detective story.

Sure this game can be divisive, but to be frank, just the fact that it exists makes me happy.

Is that its greatest merit then, just to exist? No. I feel its mostly divisive because it makes BIG choices.
Some of them are bold, but all of them fit the Monkey Island mold. Unlike some stuff in Tales of Monkey Island or Escape from Monkey Island which felt (totally) out of place. This game is a genuine and lovingly made Monkey Island game. It also recaptures the extra Ron Gilbert cynical madness that slightly left the series over the years, as he stopped working on them.

Return strikes a great balance between nostalgia, easter eggs, nods to old jokes, fresh ideas and new/returning characters and overall is still one of the few genuinely funny games out there. The puzzles where challenging enough, but never obscure or frustrating. With the hint system in place, which a seasoned player wouldn't need, maybe some puzzles could be a bit more challenging. (I played on harder difficulty)

Whatever you may think of the choice of art style, a lot of the expressive animations and drizzles of details happening on every aspect of the screen where awe inspiring. So much was "brought to life" on every scene, it amazed even when compared to way more tech-advanced games. I'd spend a few minutes regularly just to check it out. The music is also great, again a wonderful remix of the familiar and the new. The delivery of the voice acting is spot on, as always in the monkey island games.

I guess its an age thing as well, as time goes on and there is less time to play a game and truely enjoy it, Return to Monkey Island was one of the games that makes me glad I still play a few real gems now and again.
As far as a recommendation goes then: 100% recommended, like the first 3 games is part of a series that shaped what videogames can be and have become. AHOY!

Very much a tie for greatest Monkey Island game along with MI2: le Chucks revenge. As a kid this was my favourite hands down. Its not made by Ron Gilbert, you can tell in slight ways. However this game is a labour of LOVE!

The humor still holds up, the voice acting is top notch, and the art and animation is something else. Still looks like a beautiful 2D cartoonshow. Such a shame this never got the widescreen/highresolution treatment MI:1 and 2 got. Gameplay wise It still holds up very nicely too. The puzzles are mostly challenging, yet not obscure, with only a few exceptions. This is a strong recommendation for anyone who enjoyed the previous Monkey Island games, or interested in adventure games in general. Pappapishu!

Three headed monkeys, Holding your breath for 10 minutes, story's of how I beat LeChuck, Phleghm mastery.

Yes, a great game, then and now. Great puzzles, Amazing dialog, tons of eastereggs, genuinely funny in all aspects, great looking both in classic and remake mode, amazing music and a sweetspot for length. Bonus: The story is actually continues with the release of Return to Monkey Island. So 100% recommended.

Just a classic, very well remade. Does it still hold up?

The content of the game is still good and actually added a lot of stuff compared to the original psx version.
The controls are also updated to modern standards, purists can still go classic, so everyone is happy.
The game looks great, Voices and characters are heavy on the cheese, but there are some story elements that have some drama (Lisa/Jessica)
Gameplay is very much classic oldskool survival horror. Low on ammo, low on visibility, and killing does have its drawbacks, making running from enemies a valid option. I personally really liked this.

The horror elements then. The game can have a few pop up moments, but generally its more tense in a good way then crap your pants scary. Its very fun though.

So far so good, BUT: The amount of backtracking and inventory management are dreadful in this game. Only a few places to save and very limited inventory means you will be walking back and forth a lot. Now as a form of padding: its ok in most games. Especially a game this old. BUT the combination of these things make 30-40% of your playtime walking back to get an item, bring something you pick up back to your stach, save after or before a moment you feel might kill you etc etc.

A solid recommendation then, if you can put up with flaws like this: A perfect recommendation, just make sure you play before the new remakes (of 2, 3 and upcoming 4)!

What a great game, what value for your money.

A run based system, with unlocks and progression across 3 characters
Each character has their own decks and unlocks.
An insane amount of cards, lots of build styles.
Two different Deck mechanics (battle/dialogue) used at once.
A huge variety in quests and NPC's.
Story mode, challenge mode, daily quest mode.

Just WOW. Only downside I can think of is that this game is a bit too grindy and runs can take a bit too long for you to get wiped before you start unlocking the cards en perks you need. Its only a downside if you have limited time.

Greatly recommended
