For when you don't want to play a game so complicated that 99% of the playerbase mindlessly follow a guide (PoE), and you don't want a game so simple and naff that you fall asleep playing it (Diablo 3+) - There's this game.

There are plenty of people throwing a sh*tfit because of the server issues and I just wanted to make sure I did my part by putting one in the positive column.

The game is great, They've had a rocky launch because of the sheer volume of players. I honestly recommend getting this game - probably in a week or two from this review.

The game currently has a bug whereby even if you're running at 100+ frames : the game is very choppy and glitchy, visually. This has been addressed by the devs :

"Sometimes players can feel like their client is limited to significantly lower framerates than it should be. I.E camera movements feeling like they are 60fps, even though the game is running at 200. This issue is known by the team and we are actively investigating, this was not intentional nor is it an engine limitation. In the meantime, some players have reported that manually limiting the game client to 60FPS can actually make the client feel smoother, if you are personally impacted by this issue."

I will say that it felt like a LOT less than 60fps for me. This issue very much spoils the experience, so I'll be waiting until they fix it.

They have apparently known about it since October last year, so hopefully it should be dealt with sooner rather than later. Once the issue is fixed and I can actually play the game, I'm sure from everything my friends have told me that I'll be changing this review to positive.

I'm just trying to save anyone else the experience of being gutted they can't play what is obviously going to be a really good game.

[edit] To be clear as well, I've tried messing with in-game settings, changing v-sync settings, limiting the games FPS to 60. None of these have made it any better.

Despite barely scratching the surface so far (I've been obsessed with building larger and larger bases) - the game is an absolute triumph. For me, it's hugely reminiscent of the experience I had on my first play through of Terraria. I'm excited everytime I see a new mob, encounter a new biome or loot a new material. The game keeps making me want more. Simply building things and improving structures aesthetically can eat up hours.

The low-fi approach to most textures and models is charming, rather than feeling under developed. The music is atmospheric and it changes with events (day, night, bosses) and for each biome I've been to so far.

Chopping wood and mining stone, building bases and houses etc aren't anything new to games - but they've pulled off these basic, familiar mechanics with such a tactile, satisfying finish that they're as fun for me as the first time I saw them in a game.

Can be played alone quite happily, but best enjoyed with one or two friends in my opinion.

The game is early access but has thusfar been very stable and I've even been able to play with family on the opposite side of the planet. 400 ping? No problem.

Don't buy anything for this game unless you're prepared to buy everything. I started playing with the latest expansion (Beyond Light). I've enjoyed the PVE gunplay and grinding has been fine.

The reviews I'd read saying that the transition to seasonal content instead of players having access to all the original stories and locations in the DLCs concerned me but I thought I'd give the game a try. Here playing for a few weeks and this time when the weekly missions refreshed (the main way of levelling up), one of the main events is behind a paywall for one of the older DLCs (Which you can't replay the full story from).

If you're not happy to buy all the DLCs to be given the intermittent opportunity to play small slices of them : don't bother buying any. Save your money.

The pvp felt hopelessly imbalanced and meta-driven, though admittedly I didn't play enough to understand the meta. I couldn't be arsed. The pvp is described as not level dependent - and yet you can go into a match, light someone up with multiple magazines from your weapon and then have them 1shot you. So yes, not level dependant - but subject to such specific gear meta that nomatter how well you shoot or how bad your enemy : the thing deciding the fight is the gear.

Heard rumours of the rampant hacking in destiny and to be honest : I didn't see many players miss shots. Getting sniped at impossible angles and prefired happened in every single match.
