Darktide: A Tale of Two Save-states

As an avid Vermintide 1 & 2 enjoyer I am both pleased and saddened by the state of Darktide upon launch. I will endeavor to list both what pleases and displeases me in a least nerdy format as possible.

EDIT: The new weapon progression is a vast improvement on the original system. The game should have launched with this!

I will also exclude anything that I personally deem to be normal launch issues(i.e. server instability, small bugs and glitches, etc.)

TLDR?
All in all, I find the game very enjoyable and great fun to play. However I cannot recommend it due to the "Live Service" game model. When Fatshark ends service for Darktide, the game ends. You will not be able to "boot the game up with your friends in 20 years and play it at a LAN party."

I've recommended too many titles to friends and had the game vanish due to corporate buyouts or market crashes or what-have-you to tell you, person of the internet, that you should spend your money here without fair warning.

Game Mechanics
The Good

Combat
Combat is much more varied and dynamic that previous titles. Ranged combat more enjoyable, mostly due to ammunition being more available. There are clear audio cues for everything from standard mobs about to hit you from behind to the specific variants of elites' weapon attacks. Combat overall feels very impactful and is very enjoyable. I love the attention to detail.

Enemies
Darktide is more polished in is execution of elites, specials and bosses than previous Fatshark titles. There are more baddies, more variations of each that in any previous games. This adds to the variety of game-play and replay-ability. Props to Fatshark on this.

Weapons
The sounds and visuals of the weapons in Darktide are excellent. I've not found a weapon that I didn't enjoy using in someway. Each weapon type prioritizes a particular game play style so find one that works for you. No complaints here from me.

Note: Many folks online are complaining about the current loot system, yet the ability to choose your loot from a pool instead of a single RNG roll is a vast improvement IMO.

Character Creation
Having customizable characters in a Warhammer game is fun, but it does negatively affect the depth and value of your character to the overall story of the game. Personally, in the 40K universe, the feeling like you are just one of a billion nameless members of the Imperium is part of setting. I am not put off but this in the least. The banter between the characters is still there, and is as hilarious as ever.

The Community & Confusion
The Bad

The communication from Fatshark on this game has been abysmal. There are some things that were promised that current community managers are now saying will not be in the game for silly nonsensical reasons.

The community for 40k is also about 50% entitled man-children who will take everything out of context to mean whatever they want it to mean. As much as I like the setting of 40k, which all its self-referential commentary about human stupidity, some folks new to 40k may be taken a bit off guard by the toxicity in the community forums and discord servers atm. This too will pass.

I'm not bothered by either of these things but folks should read Fatshark post and such for themselves instead of jumping on what some rando online says. The PR right now is bad, the game is good.

Summary
The Ugly

All in all, I find the game very enjoyable and great fun to play. However I cannot recommend it due to the "Live Service" game model. When Fatshark ends service for Darktide, the game ends. You will not be able to "boot the game up with your friends in 20 years and play it at a LAN party."

I've recommended too many titles to friends and had the game vanish due to corporate buyouts or market crashes or what-have-you to tell you, person of the internet, that you should spend your money here without fair warning.

As this is the biggest change from the Vermintide games IMO, it's my biggest issue.

It's a fun and overly simple Spy Hunter clone... I used it to let my kids drive, but not drive, when they wanted to play a "1race car game."

Thumbs up for the nostalgia.

Waited for this to meet stated levels of completion at launch before I purchased. I am satisfied with the sale price I bought it at, however still feels incomplete from a control perspective on PC:

Camera in third person feels too shaky, and first person has a limiting field of view.

Controls need a lot of adjustment for mouse and keyboard.

Runs on my distro of Linux just fun as well.

Fun with friends, not so much alone.

To sum it up quickly for the TL:DR crowd, Microvolts has a few unique good bits to it, mixed in with a whole lot of aweful nonsense. Play if you're interested, find a mode you like, then uninstall when you'rre fed up with it's blatently poopy payment model.

Personally...

I enjoyed the concept of this game long long ago on it's initial release. Fighting as toys through a giant room over oversized furniture is perhaps one of my weak spots.

But, guns were over-powered if you had the higher level ones, and there was not really an all around best gun. So you generally could out-play someone if they only used their favorite gun(i.e. enemy player only used a sniper rifle, use a rocket launcher or minigun at close range).

But again, leveled up guns were just too powerful and there was nothing in the way of balance... except:

Zombie Mode!

It's like a twisted version of hide and seek where you can't even trust your allies. This mode has perhaps the best version of a randomly chosen player becoming the "Zombie King," as I will call it, with around 25k hp. This player had to melee other players to turn them into minion zombies.

The balance here is rediculously good. The zombies can be knocked back by just about any firearm, and have the endurance to withstand a good beating. They must also infect all the players by a set time limit. One team wins when either all the zombies are dead, all the players are infected, or the timer runs out.

Because of the increadible toughness of infected players, hiding and waiting out the timer is a vital tactic. However, if someone who is hiding with you is infected, it benifits them more to turn around and infect you.

And that's pretty much all I played after awhile.

Everything negative is pretty much already in the other reviews, paywalls, overpowered purchasible weapons, glitchy/goofy mechanics and animaitons, and the rest of all the mess this game pushes on the player. But I think credit should be given where credit is due;

Left 4 Dead is my all time favorite zombie survival game. The simple mechanics of the gameplay and the increasing ramp of difficulty is well balanced in my personal opinion. It's great for a 20 minute gaming session on Normal, and up to two hours on Expert.

But my favorite way to play is on the original campaign, but in Left 4 Dead 2. More monsters, more weapons and, best of all, harder zombies.

IF you're willing to deal with the bugs, the lag, and the hackers, THEN this is decent free-to-play version of multiplayer cops and robbers.

Until the servers are upgraded, and the serve-side FPS and other such issues are completely ironed out, it will always be a slightly enjoyable, rage-building experience.

Some of the hairiest and most satisfying team co-ordination hassles are this game provides at the low, low, low, one time price of $0.00.

The gameplay is consistent enough to not be entirely frustrating, yet deep enough to give you the satisfaction of learning the ins and outs of combat. Diving under massed hunters' fire to bring them all to a flamethrower alien BBQ has never been better.

It's well worth the time it takes to download.

As a free-to-play and one-time-to-play game. It excells in the PvP department to no end. However, don't expect to ace everything as a lightweight class soloing in PvE. The Class system is very flexible and it is a breeze to jump from one build to another, if you have the gear to back it up; i.e. weapons and utilities.

Overall, I enjoyed it greatly. If you get into the clan warefare heavily, this game will eat your hours like Santa eats cookies.

Diablo with guns, guns, and more guns! If you like guns, and you liked Diablo II, this is the game for you!

Personally, Diablo was to limiting in the signifigant builds availible. However, in Borderlands, you can easily change how your character works to fit the situation or team build.

The internet fandom has worn off a bit, but it's still one of my favorites to play with buddies on a LAN.
