A beta masquerading as a full release. It may be worthwhile in time, but give it a hard pass for now.

A wonderful puzzle game that manages to be challenging and rewarding without being frustrating.

Requiring additional passwords when the game is already linked to steam account to play a private game over the internet = fail. Will not buy nor recommend any further games from Runic.

PoE is a difficult game for me to review. On one hand, I've gotten significant enjoyment from it over the years (as can be gleaned from the hundreds of hours I've put into the game on steam, which doesn't include time played prior to it being on steam through the stand alone launcher). However, the game is designed to be a slogfest. I find it highly appropriate that a game made by Grinding Gears Games is dedicated primarily towards grinding for gear. Much of the game content is endgame, with gear requirements that will have you hitting a brick wall even if you follow a build guide for your character. Of course, you can always buy the gear you need, but PoE's trading mechanism makes buying and selling gear much more problematic (as it requires you to browse through the forums or use 3rd party sites to find sellers and list items, as there is no ingame auction capabilities). Add into this that many items (especially 6 linked items, which are common in even so called budget builds on the forums) can be extrodinarily expensive (e.g. 10s of times the value of loot I've found in the past 300 hours of play), and your options are basically to either realize you will never reach end game content or will have to dedicate significant hours (hundreds if not thousands) to get where you want. This can be shortened if you're willing to play item merchant, but even then you'll need to spend significant time to build up inventory and camp out online to respond to buyers (and playing artifact merchant is not what I am interested in doing in my limited gaming time).

If you are looking for a hardcore ARPG and the above doesn't dissuade you, then I would say to give this a try. If you don't mind knowing you will never reach endgame content due to time constraints and are looking for a mindless ARPG, there is fun to be had here. But for most people I know, with too many other requirements on their time, I would not recommend this game. There are other ARPGs out there that are more rewarding for the casual player who isn't planning on devoting hundreds and hundreds of hours to the game.

Great game ruined by shoddy coding. I love the Gal Civ series, but I have yet to be able to play a game of Gal Civ 3 to completion. I come back every 3-4 months it seems hoping that they will have tightened the code, with no luck. Every game ends with a crash to desktop. This has occured on multiple computers (one windows 7, one windows 10), multiple patches, even after I've followed all the recommended system tweaks that the dev has recommended. I'm through with it, and with any future stardock games. Too many other good games out there to spend my time endlessly fiddling with my system and reinstalling in the seemingly vain hope that this time I'll actually be able to play an entire game. Recommending a pass on this one, as if it isn't reasonably stable this long after release I have little hope for it.

Edit: Came back and tried again two years later and I have had no problems. Have completed a couple games without too much issue, including some of the larger map sizes (I think I have not played on the largest two, but everything else has run fine, although there is some lag on the larger maps). At this point, the game is stable enough for me to revise my initial recommendation and give it a thumbs up with the caveat that, if you are wanting to play this game for the enourmous maps, make sure your PC is fairly hefty as a budget machine is likely to choke.

Lethal League is a what you get when you cross a fighting game with dodgeball in all the best ways. Players jockey to control a small ball, hitting it around the screen in an attempt to knock out eachother. Every hit on the ball speeds it up, and it quickly moves from an easy to predict slow moving projectile to a streak that bounces around the screen, ricocheting off ceiling, walls, and floor to take out players.

This simple set up leads to an exciting and incredibly fun game. Unlike most fighting games, there are no long lists of special moves to learn and memorize (each character has slightly differnt angles they will hit the ball at, and a special move that can be powered up during play and used, but no difficult button combos are required for any moves). This makes the game very intuitive and easy for players to jump in and start playing, even if you are not into fighters. However, the interplay between player and their specials does lead to a suprising amount of depth in the combat, and learning the timing to intercept balls as they come off of other players at higher speeds will take practice.

If I had any criticisms for the game, it would be that the simplicity of it can be a double edged sword. Games can start feeling repetative during long play sessions. Game options can extend this a bit, but in the end most feel gimicky and I find myself losing interest after 30-60 minutes. However, that being said, I still find myself coming back to this game to get in a few quick rounds against friends when we don't have time for a long playsession, or to finish out a night of gaming. And that is where the game shines imho, quick bursts of action and excitement when I don't have the time to spend hours playing.

This games perfectly fills a niche in my gaming library. It is well worth the price (and worth getting a few extra copies for your friends as well). An unreserved thumbs up from me.

A beautiful game ruined by excessive RNG. It feels as though every strategy is trumped by die rolls, random map resource spawn, and card draw. Yes, you can try to sway the values in your favor, but these seem to be gentle nudges to the odds, with significant resources often spent for no actual gain. In the end, every game I lost felt less "I made a critical mistake" and more "the cards/dice/etc. just refused to fall in my favor" and my victories were also less satisfactory as a result.

All that said, this is a gorgeous game that I liked thematically. If the HEAVY reliance on RNG doesn't turn you off, then you may find it much more enjoyment here than I. If, like myself, you need more of a sense of agency in a game, I would give this one a pass.
