the only game I've found that even after 1,200 hours of playing I still learn new things, I love when you think you understand a game but then it makes you think "oh, you can do that?"
the main suggestion i give you if you plan to start as a new player is : this is a huge game , as such almost all people dont do all content or at least not all content with one character , im saying this because some ppl say if you dont follow a guide you will not be able to play the game "later" on , but that later on might as well be 100 hrs into the game , with a single character , wich many dont even reach by choice , you can pretty much play what you want and reach "end game" as long as you have some sense for it , you may not be able to self build for uber bosses or harder stuff , but many many ppl dont even look at that stuff.
second suggestion, you can play what you want , exept tornado shot ... my first build ever was a tornado shot build , and i did had fun ... but man trust me even if it's cool pick an easy to understand skill for your firsts builds , at least you can figure out if you do something wrong ...
that said , i think going for your personal build or using a guide are both valid methods , me personally am more for at least the first run play what you like how you like it , then once you have a base feel of the game try new builds etc , but that's just me

really fun game,you can get a good few hours of playtime , in the "late game" part the bosses scale really fast tho so you might need to grind a bit from being able too kill one to do 1% to the other, even then if you like min maxing games this is pretty good, in a strange way it has similarities to path of exile ... minus the vibes lol

♥♥♥♥ this game and the ♥♥♥♥♥ who keeps telling me what to do in numbers instead of letting me know where the F to go , dont buy if u want a chill ride like in NFS , dont like it , worst 20 minutes of my life
