The game is initially fun, but the muddy controls kill the game. This is the perfect example for making a game hard without it being challenging. Most later deaths are due to controls not being responsive enough and hitboxes of ledges being totally different from their sprite.
If you hate yourself, buy this game.

Bought this game back in 2005, but was too young to fully understand the mechanics. Lost the key and bought it again on Steam. Now, 12 years later I finally managed to get into this great game.

Yes, it is flawed, but if you truly give the game a chance, it will win you without doubt - implying you're a fan of RTS as well as RPG games. Spellforce is an RTS game that can turn into an RPG game depending on the map and on the quest you're currently on. However, if you do not enjoy RTS games, you won't have much fun with the RPG parts either, because they're mostly secondary. While you don't need to have any RPG experience to progress in the game, knowing your way around classic RTS mechanics is crucial.

The world is really nice and it has this cringy 2000ish fantasy flair with all the ridiculous things such as misleading splash and title screens of women in revealing armor, awkward dialogues with mediocre voice acting and application of even more awkward "medieval language" and many more fantasy cliches.

The story is not outstanding or remarkable at all, but neither is it bad. The way it is presented makes the whole game pretty immersive and despite being "not that great" the story still kinda makes you want to know what happenes next. The world is well designed and there is a lot of exploring to do - RPG-style with your squad of heroes as well as RTS-style with a huge army of buffed out elite soldiers.

Speaking of the units in the RTS part of the game: What makes Spellforce really stand out is the player's ability to not only play as different races (dwarfs, humans, elves, dark elves, trolls and orcs), but also play as multiple races simultanously, which sometimes results in some really nice syngery regarding military units and recource management. The game makes is easy to buid up your base fast and spit out tons of units, which makes it clear that the RTS part is heavily focused on battle and military. This does not mean, that you can not build and prosper in peace. Sometimes that is fun too.

The RPG part of Spellforce is probably best described as a hybrid of Warcraft 3 and Diablo. A lot of clicking, enemy targeting, item drops, skilling, etc. is to be expected.

All in all I really recommend Spellforce to people who enjoyed the classic fantasy setting of games such as Gothic - BUT ONLY if you are comfortable with the RTS genre. If the conditions are met, Spellforce will become one of your favourite games. I hope you check it out and enjoy it.

I usually don't like to write negative reviews, but this is a special something:
*) ♥♥♥♥♥♥ controls
*) no content
*) insulting interface

This game raped the survival genre.

Short Review:
*) Buy it, if you like games that are difficult because they are unfair
*) Buy it, if you liked the first game
*) Don't buy it, if you're sensitive to blood and gore and animal cruelty
*) A bunch of bugs and glitches, that are borderline gamebreaking

First I have to say that I really love RPGs - especially when they are frustratingly difficult and intense - but Ys I is just something I can not and do not want to handle anytime ever again!

I bought this game expecting an awesome, story driven J-RPG with a battle system that differs from the classic RPG's type.
What I actually got was a halfhearted story, a weak and really annoying battle system as well as boring characters. The game itself is very frustrating, but not in a good way that encourages you to grind more and level up (the player's level caps at Level 10 and I reached that after the second boss of I think seven), but in a demotivating way, that makes you wanna dump this insult to the RPG genre. The frustration does not come from the difficulty of the game, but from the ridiculously bad battle system - you basically have to ambush the enemy from a certain angle to damage him without being injured, what becomes very boring and annoying - especially during boss battles. And it always is a gamble.

Now that we talk about boss battles, I have to mention something: The bosses don't have ANY relation to the story and fighting them is even more repetetive than grinding. The player needs to think of a different approach for every boss, which I quite liked, but once he figured out what to do, the boss battle loses everything that made it interesting - and even that was little. Especially the second to last boss had nothing to do with having fun playing a game. It was mere routine and repetitive ambushing from a certain angle for about 5 minutes.

In short: If you have the money and want to experience this failure of developers and an insult to RPGs and RPG fans, then go ahead and buy Ys I. Else I'd recommend buying 14 cheese burgers with the cash. I certainly regret not having done that.

I have only played Ys I and I will give Ys II a chance, but not just yet. I need a lot of distance to this game series for a while.
