Blunty put, the dev team have no idea what they're doing with this game. The community asks for one thing and the devs deliver the complete opposite, or something completely unasked for.

Perfect example is this latest update. It was supposed to be the "update that saves the game with a brand new co-op mode and huge PvP changes to make everything more fun".
What they did: removed 2/3 of the game and put it behind a DLC. Things that were previously free? Tons of it is now DLC. And of course the actual new stuff that came with this update is DLC.
They also made it exponentially harder to just FIND OTHER PLAYERS TO PVP.

We started with a decent PvPvE extract shooter and now have whatever the hell this is.

The game had so much potential at launch and I've watched the devs dig it into a hole so deep that they're more likely to find oil than salvage this game.

Fun game but has a rampant issue of completely nuking your server at random, forcing you to start a new game. The devs have no idea how to fix it to the point where they put a giant banner on the launch screen that says "hey you're gonna randomly lose your progress, sorry!"

If you're local-hosting a server it's not terrible as you can dig into your files and pull an old backup, but it's a nightmare if you're hosting a dedicated server via 3rd party.

Been like this for months and we finally lost our 10-man 500+ hour server's progress because our server got nuked and the backups were corrupted.

EDIT: Retrying a server recently for the feybreak update (two big patches since initial review) and so far it hasn't deleted itself after a week (absurd that I need to use that as a rating metric for this game) so I guess it's a good sign?

8/13/21 EDIT =================================
This went from a Dungeon Defenders 1 remake with huge potential to a downgraded version of DD1 that's made to be played on the switch. They literally re-hauled the entire game in order to smoothly play on that sorry excuse of a console. Switch couldn't handle so many enemies on the map: reduced the amount of enemies. Too many projectiles on the map for the switch to handle: capped all tower firerate. Too many towers on the map, switch no like: reduced the amount of towers you can put on maps.

I did a test run, and sadly there was no longer any of that chaos of dungeon defenders that I loved. No more giant hordes of enemies that can overwhelm your defenses with sheer volume if built incorrectly. No more RNG 5 ogre spawns on one door. No more waterfall-esque cannonball turrets because you maxed your tower speed on your squire for memes.

It also all feels just *so much easier*. I breezed through a NMHC survival run while completely botching my build because it's just been so long. (Mind you, I put the game down for a while because I could not, for the life of me, manage to pass wave 20 on this specific map with this specific setup; but now here I am, nothing changed on my characters, and I blew through it without repairing, and only 3* upgrades on anything at most.) I reached wave 25 and there were only 800 enemies spawning on a map that previously would spawn 2000+ by wave 20.

And to top it all off, the giraffe is now a *hero stat buff* pet. Yup. No more tower stats on giraffes.

If you bought this wanting what it was supposed to be, a DD1 remake with more content, then it's sadly turning away from it.

HOWEVER. I feel that it is still playable and a decent game if you instead look at it as "Dungeon Defenders Awakened: the pathetic switch downgrade". It still is a generally fun dungeon defenders game, but is just extremely toned down in order to accommodate the lacking hardware of the switch, and the laziness of the developers to make a separate switch version like the community wanted (instead of downgrading the actual already-released game to work on the switch).

I'd recommend the game if you don't care about it being a switch downgrade, but personally do not recommend it because it is clearly steering away from what I signed up (and paid) for.

Original Review =========================

I'll just say three things to people debating to buy this game:

1. It's a remake of DD1. The UI is a bit different, the maps you know and love look nicer, and there's even a few new maps as of right now. It doesn't have as much content as DD1 since there are no DLC maps for Awakened, but it's still a pretty damn good remake of a really damn good game.

2. Most of the negative comments are from people who are mad that they didn't buy the game when the Kickstarter first started, so you can ignore that chunk of reviews. (It boils down to price fluctuations)

3. The rest of the negative comments are from people who are mad that beta progress got pushed to a legacy branch. Yea, it's frustrating, but in my opinion it's a better move than having the early-game stage nonexistent due to beta players giving their new low-leveled friends all the high-leveled gear they don't need.

Pretty fun game with friends, but the game crashes almost every time I interact with something in my friend's lobby. Meanwhile, another friend crashes almost every time he opens his game menu. Not bad for the price, but could do with 200% less crashes.

Fun little game on your own, but connection issues make it impossible to play with friends (despite being on a hardwired LAN that gets roughly 300mbps down, I would constantly lag and slide about the map whilst connected to a friend's server, or vice versa. The only thing the devs say about it is that it's nothing on their end despite a good chunk of the community experiencing this issue).
Controls are also a little weird since you have to share your hotkeys (1-0 keys) between items and skills, which forces you to choose between items or skills for your easy-to-access keys.
Other than that, it's a pretty fun game to play on your own. Devs are (very) slowly pushing out updates so there's still some hope.

Feels very clunky and unfinished. Buildings are just copy-pasted prefabs of each other, and you can't even walk into the miniature warehouse-like buildings scattered about without having to try jump through the doorway. The compass HUD markers also don't work, which makes traveling in the game more of a pain.
It shines as an atmospheric single-player game, where tactics and the like actually matter. However when you add even one extra friend, combat turns into a joke where you're all running around with only pistols to try make it challenging.
It shows potential, but as of now it's quite a ways off from what could be.

New twist on the combat style of the previous games, i really enjoy that it flows more freely than previous combat systems like hollow fragment and realization. I really love how they handled incorporating the new "shooter style" game into the familar "SAO game" we've seen before. It's a nice new twist, and i'm loving it. Probably my second favorite out of all of them.

Big fan of the series and really looking forward to it, but so far from my experience it doesn't port to PC very well. Main fact being that the controler-controls are still shown instead of keyboard controls (i thought it would be fixed from the demo). Hoping it doesn't affect trial gameplay (minigames and such)... Other than that it's living up to the hype

EDIT: Figured out that the default control layout is set to controlers. to change it, right click on the game in the steam library and launch the configuration tool. Change the last option to keyboard, and the above problem is solved.
New rating 11/10 (only first trial done so far)
