Much better than it's given credit for. While the reinterpretation of the series' main characters was far from ideal, and the story was somewhat lacklustre, the DmC reboot really doesn't deserve as much hate as it gets from fans of the older games. Gameplay-wise, after having played through most of the DMC series, this entry honestly is almost on par with DMC5. Combat is smooth and the weapon variety is solid, and the only real downside to the gameplay is the sheer number of enemies that require you to use certain weapon affinities or have far too much hyper-armour, especially on higher difficulties.

The game also has solid art direction - while certain enemy and character designs leave something to be desired, the level design, colour grading and Devil Trigger effects are all visually interesting throughout.

The reimagined Dante takes a while to get used to, but he isn't THAT bad. Vergil, however, underwent a full character assassination, which understandably puts a lot of people off. Regardless, if you can look past the story (which DMC was never really the strongest for anyway), you'll find a vastly underappreciated combat system and a generally fun time.
