Very fun with as group of friends at room scale. Other than uppercutting a ceiling fan once, the action was kept within a reasonable forward and sideways direction. Kind of ruined our VR experience for the rest of the night because it set the bar so high and every other game we played felt dull in comparison. Definitely looking forward to any sequels or spinoffs. It would be really neat to see some movie tie-ins in VR. The Matrix is the natural comparison, but the game also makes you feel like John Wick.

Negatives: Only real complaints are a few occasional deaths that felt unfair (maybe the body's position is predicted between the headset and controllers in a certain way?) and a weird glitch at the very end that wouldn't allow the game to be completed (without spoiling, a necessary item wasn't spawning in my game). The deaths were a non-issue because the game keeps the action going at a fast clip. The late-game glitch was unfortunate but it was so close to the end of the game (after any real gameplay segments) that I was able to just look the ending up on YouTube and not miss anything. I also wasn't a fan of the auto-kill power you get later in the game since it felt so cheap, but I realize it was probably necessary to prevent players from locking themselves into unwinnable scenarios. Minor complaints overall.

Absolutely worth the purchase. Looking forward to new VR games from Superhot Team!

Edit: Time played only says 0.7 hours in Steam, but the full playtime was probably closer to about 4 hours (switching between a few different people), most of which I was offline for. If played straight through, it would definitely be shorter than that. Once you get the flow of things, it's not too horrendously difficult, but tagging different players in and out slowed things down. Either way, best VR game I've played so far.

Only picked 'Recommend' because the most recent reviews have been 'Not Recommended', when in reality I would prefer to give a more middle of the road review.

Porting some of the tactics Front Mission games to PC would be pretty cool but this is a different beast.

Completely independent of the series' tactics history, the mech portions of the game can be good for some arcadey fun. The customization is decent and it's a lot of fun to boost-dash around and shoot at guys. The story is fairly generic and predictable but it's enough to get you from point A to point B.

The major negative is that the game routinely takes you out of the mechs for on-foot third person shooter segments that just aren't as fun. Others may disagree, but those missions were low points for me. I also experienced some fairly regular game crashes which forced me to replay the same on-foot segment repeatedly to the point where I just gave up on trying to finish the campaign.

Didn't try multiplayer so I can't really comment on that. I assume there's virtually no one on there and I don't care enough to look.

Probably worth picking up on sale and playing through the campaign for an afternoon.

TL; DR: Good game, but the pricetag is a way too high. Steam won't let me post without giving it a thumbs up/down, so thumbs down because I didn't really enjoy the game, the price is too high, and the average score is too high.

Virtually everything about Owlboy is good. The art, music, gameplay, presentation, and writing are all well done. It's clear that a ton of love and effort has gone into the game. Like anything, there are a few rough spots here and there (the platforming in one of the final areas was particularly frustrating) but overall, each part of the game is great. That said, I can't really say that I loved the game.

For whatever reason, the whole never really came together as something greater than the sum of its parts (despite those parts all being individually decent). The gameplay is decent enough, but it wasn't quite mechanically engaging enough to pull me along. The checkpoint system is incredibly forgiving, so there isn't really any challenge. The whole idea of having companions never really plays out to be more than just having different weapons equipped, which feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. On top of that, the puzzles aren't very mind-bending nor the gameplay particularly exciting. Likewise with the story and characters. They were interesting enough, but I usually didn't really feel super interested in what was around the next corner. The music was uniformly well composed and performed, but often felt out of place. The world is very pretty and well-connected, but there isn't really enough going on to encourage a ton of exploration. Ultimately, it feels like you end up with the worst parts of a Metroidvania game (excessive backtracking through areas) without the good ones (the feeling of excitement to use a new skill/ability to open new areas and find secrets). I realize the game isn't necessarily meant to be a Metroidvania, but the style of the world is reminiscent of one.

All that said, the quality of the individual components of the game gives it a bit of charm that settled in by the end of the 8-10 hours I spent with it. I can't give it an outright recommendation because of the price and the lack of cohesive greatness, but it is by no means bad.

Edit: The more I've been thinking about it, I just didn't really find the game to be fun. Plain and simple. And because none of the other elements really stuck out to me as being really exceptional, I wasn't left with a great impression overall. If you find the game fun, I think it will feel really, really great but I didn't because the gameplay didn't really grab me.

Edit 2: Fixed TLDR for people who can't read good.

Highly recommended for anyone with any interest in assembly programming. The game assumes a degree of familiarity or interest, so don't expect to come into the game with no programming knowledge and walk out as an assembly pro. It could help sharpen your tools, but you need that toolset going in. There's enough here to get you started but you may need to supplement the manual if you have no idea at all how a processor works. Thankfully we live in an age where that sort of information is readily available to anyone who is inclined to look for it. If that sounds like a unique form of torture to you, it may not be the game for you.

The UX of the game also deserves a special mention. From launching the program to physically thumbing through the manual to checking emails to completing assignments to wasting time playing Chinese Solitaire, it really makes you feel like an expat wage slave in the Pearl River Delta of the future. I haven't lived in Shenzhen in 2026, but the characters in the game really match up with similar experiences in other nearby parts of the world. It's great. 10/10

Great piece of software. Has tons of options for customizing your environment. It can be a little difficult at times to find the exact option for what you want to change, but that's just the cost of having so much functionality. A quick Google usually sorts things right out.
