as for the story tree you need to level up each character to unlock further missions, this is done by doing activities ingame that correspond to their colour

in reply to your rage 2 comment, you only unlock each of the three skill tree paths by meeting the person in their home town. You must travel to all 3 main city's, talking to the lead people to get the quests to advance in skill trees. Hope this helps :)
