Somehow, it has taken me more than 12 years to play this after finishing, and absolutely loving, Max Payne 2. All I know is that while the second game is one of my favourite games of all time, this game completely overshadows it in terms of gameplay. While the second game offers a more slick delivery of its atmosphere, story and physics, the gameplay loop of its predecessor is a lot tighter and more satisfying. I am completely convinced that if this game had been released today, perhaps with some more graphical polish, it would have no trouble finding an audience that would adore it.
